' '4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in postal valueprinting machines of the type where thev digitwheels are provided with adjustable printing types and in which simultaneously with the setting of the digit wheels, a corresponding numberof teeth are caused to assume operative position for cooperation with a suitable counting device. The invention has for its object to improve the digit wheels and the radially movable types and the combination of these wheels with the mechanism for securing the necessary displacement of these types.

Referring to the drawings in detail and in particular to Fig. 1 the complete postal value printing machine is shown diagrammatically. A shaft 4 is rotatably mounted in the machine frame and supports a set of digit wheels designated generally at C and a set of counter ac tuating wheels A.
A plurality of telescopic shafts 5 corresponding in number to the number 01 digit wheels in the group C is rotatably mounted on the shaft 4. At one end of the nestof tubular shafts 5 is arranged the counter actuating wheels A each 40 of which consists of a cam disk 6. As shown in Fig. 2 the ends of the tubular shafts 5 are arranged in stepped relation and the cam disks 6 are secured thereto by means of keys 1 engaging in slots 8 in the tube. Each cam disk 6 oo- 45 operates with a gear Ill having a plurality of radially movable teeth I I guided in radial grooves I I provided in the gear wheel Ill. The teeth II are provided with laterally projecting pins I2 arranged in the cam slots I 3 in the disks 6 whereby when said disks are turned relative to the gear wheels III, the teeth II are successively moved outwardly to operative position in number depending on the extent of relative angular movement of the disk 6 and the gear wheel Ill.
The ends of the tubular shafts 5 opposite the (Cl. NI-91) counter actuating Wheel set A are also arranged in stepped relation and are non-rotatably secured in digit wheels I4 carrying radially displaceable bars I5 having type on the outer terminals thereof of values ranging from zero to 5 9. The type bars I5 are provided with laterally projecting pins I6 engaged in cam slots ll in the disks I8. I,
At one side of the set of wheels I4, a disk I9 is arranged and which is secured to and rotata- 10 ble with the shaft 4. At the opposite side of the digit wheels is arranged a second disk 29 which is rotatably mounted on the outermost tubular shaft 5 and the two disks I9 and 20 are coupled in spaced relation by the bar 2I having an opening therein as shown in Fig. 4 through which the type bars I5 may be projected to operative position. In this manner the disks I9 and together with'the bar 2I are secured to and rotate as a unit with the shaft 4.
A spacing sleeve 23 is mounted on the outermost tubular shaft 5 interposed between the disk 20, and the nearest adjacent wheel I0 and nuts 25 are fitted on a threaded portion of the shaft 4 and are adjusted so as to maintain the parts constituting the assemblages A and C in proper relative position by means of a pressure disk 24 with which said nuts coact.
The cam disks I 8 are provided with projections 22 which embrace the bar 2| and are thus held against rotary movement relative to the shaft 4. The prominent point of each cam slot I I is arranged adjacent the opening in the bar 2| and thus as the wheels I4 are rotated relatively to the shaft 4 and the cam disks I8 the slidable type bars I5 carried thereby are successively moved outwardly by the pins I6 to the operative position shown in Fig. 4 and are thus disposed in position for printing.
The gear wheels I0 and the disk 24 are provided with peripheral grooves 26 engaged by a bar 21 secured to the disk 20 whereby said wheels I0 and the disk 24 are held against rotary movement relative to the shaft 4 and the disks I9 and 20 and digit wheels I4.
The mechanism for setting the digit wheels I4 is illustrated in detail in Fig. 6 and is partly shown in Fig. 1. This mechanism consists of a member 94 forming part of the machine casing and having slots 93 therein corresponding in number to the number of digit wheels. The walls of each slot 93 are formed with arcuate grooves 95 receiving a slide member 96 through which extends a setting rod 91. The slide members 96 are provided with upright arms 98 passing through the slots 93 and provided with guides 99 for the setting rods 91. The guides 99 each abut a sleeve I which, together with an upper sleeve IEH to which the rod 9'! is secured by means of a. nut I02, enclose a spring I03 normally holding the rod 97 in raised position. The rods 91 have angular portions I04 which in the raised positions of the rod abut against a guide member I05. When a rod 9'1 is depressed, the lower end thereof enters a recess I06 in the corresponding digit wheel whereby the latter may be rotated to the desired extent by moving the setting rod 91 and slide member 95 arcuately through the slot 93.
From the foregoing it will be understood that each of the digit wheels I4 corresponds with one of the actuating wheels I0 and as one of the wheels I4 is turned by its setting rod 91 to a position corresponding with the value to be printed, the type bar I is moved to operative position as shown in Fig. 4. Simultaneously with this adjustment the corresponding tubular shaft 5 is turned through the same angle and the movement thereof is transferred to the related cam disk 6. In this manner a number of displaceable counter actuating teeth II is projected outwardly to operative position as shown in Fig. 3 corresponding with the value represented by the projected type bar I5. In this manner a value is set up in the wheels I0 depending on the number of teeth II projected outwardly which corresponds With the value set up in the printing bars I5.
During the rotary movement of the shaft 4 following the above mentioned adjustment, the printing of the desired value is effected and the value set up in the Wheels I0 is transferred to a suitable counting device (not shown).
In the modification of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5 both the type bars I5 and the teeth II are arranged on one digit wheel Ida and the cam disk I8a is provided with the cam slots I31; and Na coacting respectively with the pins I2a and I6a of the adjustable counter actuating teeth I la and the type bars I5a. According to this arrangement, as the digit wheel I4 is turned relatively to the cam disk IBa, a number of counter actuating teeth Ila is projected corresponding with the value of the type bar I5a which is moved to operative position.
What I claim is:
1. In a machine of the character described, a main shaft, digit wheels rotatably mounted on said shaft, radially movable type bars mounted in said digit wheels, cam discs cooperating with the said type bars, means securing the said cam discs against rotation relatively to the said main shaft, and means for efiecting relative rotation of said digit wheels.
2. In a machine of the character described, a main shaft, digit wheels rotatably mounted on said shaft, radially movable type bars mounted in said digit wheels and provided with laterally projecting pins, cam discs secured against rotation relatively to the main shaft and having cam slots cooperating with the said pins, and means for eflecting relative rotation of said digit wheels.
3. In a value printing machine of the type described, a shaft, digit wheels rotatably mounted on said shaft, radially adjustable type bars carried by said digit wheels, cam discs secured against rotation relatively to the main shaft and coacting with the type bars to cause displacement of the latter, and means for relatively rotating the several digit wheels.
4. In a value printing machine of the type described, a shaft, digit wheels rotatably mounted on said shaft, radially adjustable type bars carried by said digit wheels, cam discs cooperating with the said type bars and having lugs thereon rigidly mounted on the main shaft, a bar rigidly connected with the said discs and bearing against said lugs whereby the discs are secured against rotation relatively to the main shaft, and means for relatively rotating the several digit wheels.
