Description
S E D R E O G W E l BAG FRAME Filed May 15, 1955 Patented June 30, 1936 UNITED STATES BAG FRAME Frederick W. Goerdes, to The J. E. `Mergott Newark, N. J., assignor Company, Newark, N. J.,
a corporation of Delaware Application May 15,
3 Claims.
This invention relates to frames for ladies hand bags and more particularly to means for ornamenting such frames.
In U. S. Patent #1,612,919, issued to W. C.
Hiering on January 4, 1927, there is disclosed a device for ornamenting bag frames, comprising a` channelled holder attached to a bag frame and receiving a display plate. Bag frames are generally U-shaped; and it is customary to attach devices as disclosed in the above patent to the longitudinal memberI of a U-sliaped bag frame. However, should the display plates be attached to the legs as Well as to the longitudinal member of the U-shaped frame, the ornamental effect would be destroyed and. the bag frame have an unsightly appearance because no provision is made to close the gap between the ornamental display plate on the longitudinal member and the display plates. on the legs of the bag frame, the legs being substantially at right angles to the longitudinal member.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide means for ornamenting a bag frame, comprising holders attached to the legs as well as the longitudinal member of a U-shaped bag frame, said holders being in the form of channels and receiving display plates, there being means provided at the juncture of the plates to effectively close the gap between adjoining plates.
A further object is the provisio-n of a display plate for ornamenting a hand bag frame, said plate being arcuate in cross-section and formed of relatively thin material.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a hand bag frame embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a channelled holder for receiving display plates, the holder being attachable to a U-shaped frame member, as shown in Fig. 2,
Fig. 3 is a view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is an exploded ViewA of elements used in my ornamental device.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown in 50 Fig. 1, a hand bag frame comprising two U-shaped frame members 5 and 6, which are hingedly connected to each other in a well known manner. The frame member 5 has protruding from the longitudinal section 'I thereof, an element 8 of a latching device, which cooperates with an ele- 1935, serial No. 21,541
ment 9 mounted on the longitudinal section of frame member 6, the latching device shown being of a well known type, and forming no part of this invention.
Attached to the U-shaped frame member 6 is a U-shaped holder having legs I0 and longitudinal portions I I as shown` in Fig. 2. The longitudinal portions II are spaced from each other to accommodate the latch 9, see Fig. 1. The holder is in the nature of a channelled guide with the side walls thereof provided with inwardly directed flanges I2. At the junction of the legs I with the longitudinal portions II, the side walls and flanges I2 are interrupted. The holder can be attached to the frame member by means of glue or similar adhesives. However, I have found it advantageous to form in the holder a plurality of spaced depressions I3 which serve to space the holder from the frame member and at the same time provide means through which the holder can be secured to the frame member by spot welding or the like.
Inserted in the legs and longitudinal portions of the holder are plates I4 which are arcuate in cross section and formed from a sheet of material of substantially uniform thickness. However, it will be noted that other' cross sectional shapes and thicknesses of material can be employed without departing from the spirit of this invention. It has been found desirable to provide the display plates with an arcuate cross section as this form has a more pleasing appearance than a flat plate.
At the juncture of the plates I4 in the legs I0 with the plates in the longitudinal section II, l,
there ordinarily would exist a gap tending to detract from the ornamental value of the plates. In order to overcome this objectionable feature, there is inserted in the holder at the juncture of the longitudinal section I I and the leg I0 a small flat plate I5 having its outer end I6 upturned at substantially 45 degrees. The outer end I6 has its edge curved to substantially conform with the radius of curvature of the arcuate plates I4, so that at the juncture of the plates in the leg portions I0 with the plates in the longitudinal member II, the gap will be closed by the small plate I5 and the plates I 4 will be substantially flush with the outer end I6 of the small insert plate I5, thereby considerably improving the appearance of the frame member at the same time increasing the stability and rigidity of the ornamental plates positioned in the holder.
The plates I4 may be of various colors and may be divided into sections, separated by spacers I'I.
It will be seen from the above description that I have provided means for ornamenting a hand bag frame which obviously makes possible the producing of a great many novel and pleasing effects to enhance the ornamental appearance of ladies hand bags without necessitating material alteration of the frame member or interfering with the hand bag proper.
It will be noted that my device is of extremely simple structure and is adapted to be readily attached to a standard type of hand bag frame by means of an adhesive, spot welding or a similar metal.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously embodiments may be constructed including many modifications, Without departing from the spirit of the invention herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In combination with a U-shaped bag frame having a longitudinal section and legs at right angles to said longitudinal section, a holder cornprising a U-shaped channel guide having its side walls provided with inturned flanges, said flanges and walls being interrupted at the corners of the U-shaped holder, plates inserted in the legs and longitudinal section of the U-shaped holder, said plates being arcuate in cross section and of substantially uniform thickness and means inserted in the holder at the corners thereof to close the gap between plates in the longitudinal section and in the legs of the holder.
2. In combination with a U-shaped bag frame having a longitudinal section and legs at right angles to said longitudinal section, a holder comprising a U-shaped channel guide having its side walls provided vwith inturned flanges, said flanges and walls being interrupted at the corners -of the U-shaped holder, plates inserted in the legs and longitudinal section of the U-shaped holder, said plates being arcuate in cross section and of substantially uniform thickness, and plates inserted in the longitudinal section of the holder at the corners thereof, said plates having their outer ends upwardly directed at substantially 45 degrees to close the gap between plates in the longitudinal section and in the legs of the holder.
3. In combination with a bag frame member having portions thereof at angles to each other, a channelled guide attached to and having substantially the same shape as the frame member, ornamental plates positioned in the various sections of the guide, said plates being substantially arcuate in cross section and of uniform thickness, and small plates inserted in the guide at the corners thereof, said plates having their outer ends upturned to' space adjacent ornamental plates from each other.
FREDERICK W. GOERDES.
