(ci. 10i- 132) This invention relates to duplicating machines and is particularly adapted to be embodied in a duplicating machine of the type wherein master sheets of paper are employed and the copy sheets are moistened with'a suitabale solvent for the ink or carbon on the master sheet, each copy sheet being brought in turn vinto contact with the master sheet so that the data on the master sheet will be duplicated on the copy sheet.
The master sheets are generally made by placing a piece of carbon paper against the back surface of a sheetof paper, and then the data` to be duplicated is typed or written on the front surface of the master sheet so that it appears in reverse upon the back surface of the master sheet. Of course, it is not necessary to have the data appear on the front surface of the master sheet, and, therefore, it is not necessary to employ a ribbon in the typewriter during the typing operaon for clamping the-master sheet thereto. The
copy vsheets are. advanced manually to the duplicating drum, and a platen roller is adapted to press the copy sheets against the master sheets during the duplicating operation. Means is provided for bringing the duplicating drum to a positive stop at the end of each cycle of operation.
As an example of the general type of machine referred to, such a machine is shown in the application of Morrison and Stewart, Serial No. 753,336, on Duplicating machines, flied-November 16, 1934.
` In machines of this character, the application of a new master sheet to the drum to replace an old one should be done quickly, and with as little possibility of inaccuracy in positioning as possible. A feature of this machine is the provision of means for lquickly` applying and accurately positioning a new master sheet onthe drum.
Such means comprises a master sheet table, which functions as a guide means to align a. master sheet with the clampingmeans on the drum, a. manually operable member adapted whenactuated to cause the machine uponcontinued rotation of the drum to thereafter open the master sheet clamping means and release the old master sheet, then to bring" theopen clamping means into alignment with the edge of the master sheet table and come to a positive stop with the clamp open at the frontedge of the table. Referring tothe drawings wherein a 'preferred embodiment of the vinvention is disclosed, the reference characters 20 and 2| designate two side frames adapted torest upon any suitable support,

Projecting through the frames 20 and 2| are bolts 2l and 21 which bolts carry a shaft 90. Rotatably journaled on the shaft 90 is a duplicating cylinder 92 provided with hubs 99 and 94.= Bearings 29 and 29 are interposed between the shaft III and the hubs 99 and 94. It will be noted that packing 99 is provided in the hubs I9 and 94-to prevent loss of lubricant from the bearings.
The drum 92 is fabricated from a cylinder wall 91 and disks Il and 99, the hubs I9 and I4 being preferably formed integral with the disks 29 and 99.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the bolt 21 projects through the frame 29 and through a spacing collar 40 disposed adjacent the inner `surface of the frame 20. The end of the shaft 99 terminates flush with the inner surface of the` collar 40. It will also be noted from Fig.f3 that the bolt 29 extends through a sleeve 42 which has one end disposed within the frame 2|. The end of the shaft III abutsagainst the end of the sleeve 42, and the inner end of the sleeve 42 is provided with an outwardly extending 'annular ange 49.
Disposed around the sleeve 42 and held between the flange 49 and a collar 44 is a'vbushing 49 on which a sleeve 49 is rotatably journaled. A gear 49 formed integral with the sleeve 49 meshes with a pinion 49 mounted upon a lshaft 50 which is rotatably journaled in the frame 2 I. 'I'he inner end of the sleeve 46 is provided with an integral flange l2, and projecting from the inner surface of the flange 92 are diametrically opposed lugs 94. As shown more clearly in the prior application hereinbefore mentioned. the lugs 94 project into'l slots 99 in a hub 99 of a lever 59. The hub'99 is pivotallyA mounted on one end of the adjacent hub 99. g The free end of the lever 99 is slotted at 90, andthe slot 90 accommodates a bolt 9| whch is fixed in a boss 99 on the disk I9 (Figs. 1 an 3).
It will be readily understood that the sleeve 4l can drive the lever 99 through the medium of the lugs 94, and that the lever 99 will in turn rotate the drum 92 thr'ough the medium of the bolt 9|.
It will also be readily understoodv that the drum 92 can be angularly adjusted with respect to the lever 99. This adjustment may be made by loosening the bolt 9|, moving the drum relative to the lever, and then tightening the bolt.

The mechanism actuated by the member 66 and the bell crank 69a is of no further interest Vto the present invention and, therefore, will not be furl' ther described. However, this mechanism actuates a moistening device 12, a liquid feeding device 19, and a platen roller 14 in timed relation to the rotation of the drum as described-m the' .application hereinbefore mentioned. The copy sheets are carried upon a table 14a and are delivered onto a delivery table 19 in the usual manner, after the duplicating operation.
The new master sheets are carried upon a master sheet table 19.f As illustrated best in Fig. 18, this table has thereon at the side thereof next to the frame member 2li, an upstanding bracket 19. Below the bracket 19, a bracket |9| has one end riveted to a side flange 19a of the table 19, and pin |0| a extends between the free end of the bracket |0| and the side flange 19a. At the front edge of table 19, a stop projection |09 is provided. The table 19 inherently functions as a guide means to properly align the forward edge oi' the new master sheet. As illustrated best in Figures 2, 14 and l5 the front edge of the table 16 fits close to the drum surface and the table surface directs a master sheet thereon right into the open clamping means when the drum is positioned to align the clamping means with the front edge of the table.

' As shown most clearly in Figs. l and 4, the master sheet table 19 is pivoted to the frame members 20 and 2| by means of a rod 11. An arm 19 is pivoted to the upstanding bracket 19. This arm 19 has a cam surface 99 adapted to cooperate with a pin 9| (see Fig. 1'1) on the drum for swing.

Mounted within a plate 91 on the drum is a bar 99 which is adapted to cooperate with rollers 99 and 99 rotatably mounted in the clamping bar 95. It will be noted that the bar 99 has spaced slots 9| and 92 therein which are adapted,
when aligned with the rollers 99 and 90, to permit the springs 99 to move the bar 99 as shown inv Figs. 1l and l2 from the position shown in Fig. l2 to that shown in Fig. 11 to thus clamp the master sheet between an edge of the bar 99 and the adjacent edge of the drum as shown in Fig. 13. The bar 99 is slightly longer than the drum and is slidable longitudinally in the drum so as to have one enclI or the other projecting beyond the drum. In Fig. ll, the bar 99 projects at the right hand end of the drum, while,v in Fig. 12 in the released 'position of the clamping bar 95,*the bar 88 projects at the left hand end of the drum.

'-,The operator can now feed the master sheet into the clamping device, and, in order "to close` the clamping device on the master sheet, the operator rotates the drum in the reverse direction to its normal direction of movement. This brings the right hand end of the bar 66 into engagement with a cam member 96 (see Figs. 5 to 8). located at the right hand end o! the drum to thus push the bar 66 back into closing posi- .So long as the bar 66 is in the vmaster sheet clamping position, it does not engage the cam 96, so this ,cam remains out oi-operation until ,the master sheet is again. released.
By the reverse rotation of the drlml, the master sheet table 16 is caused to move simultaneously withthe drum from the position shown in Fig. 15A to that shown in Fig. 16 because the pin 6| presses down' upon the shoulder 94 to thus pull the-arm 19 andwith it the table 16' downwardly. L While certain embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims in which it is the intention to claim all novelty inherent in the invention as broadly as possible in view of the I claim: i
1. Inga duplicating machine, a rotatable dupl'i-f" cating drum, master sheet clamping means on said drum; a master sheet table, means for releasing said-sheet clampingl means, a manually operable cpntrol means including a member for 'actuating said releasing means, and means providing a positive'stop for said drum, said control means operating to stop said clamping means in alignment with said table, and means operable 65 by, rotation of said drum to close said clamping means and reset said control means.
2. In a duplicating machine, a rotatable duplicating drum, a clamp for securing a master sheet to said drum, means for pressing copy'sheets against said master sheet during rotation of said drum, means for rotating saiddrum, manually operable means to open the master sheet clamp and release the master sheet while the `drum is rotating, means to stop said drum' after opening 75 of the clamp to permit feeding a new master sheet thereto, and means to thereafter close said clamp by rotating said drum.
3. In a duplicating machine, a frame, a drum rotatably mounted thereon, master sheet clamping means on said drum, manually operable means to open said clamping means and stop the drum, said manually operable means including a positive latch mechanism preventing further advance of said drum, means to close said clamping means, and means to restore said manually operable means to its functionally inoperative position, said two last named means being operable by movement of said drum.
4. In a duplicating machine, a rotatable duplicating drum, master sheet clamping means on said drum, a master sheet table, a hand lever, a stop member on said drum, said hand lever being movable intothe path of said stop member to stop said drum, and means operable upon movement of said lever into drum stopping position to release said sheet clamping means and align it with said master sheet table.
5. In a duplicating machine, a rotatable duplicating drum, master sheet clamping means on said drum. a master sheet table, a hand lever, a
stop member on said drum, said hand lever being movable into the path of said stop member to stop said drum, and means operable upon movement of said lever into drum stopping position to release said sheet clamping means and align it with said master sheet table, said second named means having a means engaging said stop member to cause the drum and table to move together upon reverse'movement of the drum.
6. In a duplicating machine, a rotatable duplicating drum, master sheet clamping means on said drum, a master sheet table, a hand lever, a stop member on said drum, said hand lever being movable into the path of said stop member to stop said drum, and means operable upon movement of said lever into drum stopping position to release said sheet clamping means and align it with said master sheet table, said second named means being movable by said stop member upon reverse rotation of the drum. and said master sheet table being connected to said second named means and movably supported on the machine whereby it is maintained in alignment with the master sheet clamping means during the reverse movement of the drum.
7. In a duplicating machine, a rotatable duplicating drum, clamping means for seciu'ing a master sheet to said drum, means for pressing copy sheets against said master sheet during rotation of said drum, means for rotating said drum, manually operable means to open the master sheet clamping means and release the master sheet while the drum Vis rotating, means to stop said drum after opening of the clamping means to permit feeding a new master sheet thereto, and means to thereafter close said clamping means by rotating said drum, said manually operable means comprising a hand lever, and said drum having a stop member for engaging said lever to stop the drum.
8. In a duplicating machine, a rotatable duplicating drum, clamping means for securing a master sheet to said drum, means for pressing copy sheets against said master sheet during rotation of said drum, means for'rotating said drum, manually operable means to open the master sheet clamping means and release the master sheet while the drum is rotating, means to stop said drum after opening of the clamping means to permit feeding a new master sheet thereto, and means to thereafter close said clamping means by rotating said drum, said last named means comprising a sliding bar on said drum for closing said clamp, and a cam on the machine engageable with said bar.
9. In a duplicating machine, a rotatable duplicating drum, master sheet clamping meanson said drum, a master sheet table supporting a master sheet adjacent to the surface of said drum, manually operable means adapted when actuated to provide a stop for stopping said drum with the clampingv means in alignment with the adjacent edge of said table, and means operated by said manually operable means when it is actuated to cause opening of the clamping means as the drum rotates to bring the clamping means into alignment with the table.
l0. In a duplicating machine, a rotatable duplicating drum, master sheet clamping means on said drum, a master sheet table having one edge adjacent the surface of said drum, a device for opening said clamping means as the drum is rotated, said device being normally heldin functionally inoperative position, manually operable means for moving said device into functionally operative position, and stop means operated by said manually operable means to stop said drum after the clamping device is opened, with the open clamping device aligned with the edge of said table.
ll. In a duplicating machine, a frame, a duplicating drum rotatably journalied therein, master sheet clamping means on said drum, a master sheet table adjacent to said drum, manually controlled cooperating means on said drum and said frame for opening said clamping means during rotation of the drum, and stop means on the drum and frame for stopping said drum, when the clamping means is open, with the clamping means aligned with said table.
12. In a duplicating machine, a frame, a duplicating drum rotatably journalled therein, master sheet clamping means on said drum, a master sheet table adjacent to said drum, manually controlled cooperating means on said drum and said frame for opening said clamping means during rotation of the drum, and stop means on the drum and frame for stopping said drum, when the clamping means is open, with the clamping means aligned with said table, said stop means comprising a projection on said drum and a lever on said frame movable into the path of said projection.
13. In a duplicating machine, a frame, a duplicating drum rotatably journalled therein, master Car sheet clamping means on said drum, a master sheet table adjacent to said drum, and movable in said frame between a functionally inoperative position with respect to the drum and a functionally operative position with one edge adjacent to the drum, and manually controlled means adapted when actuated to cause movement of said table to its functionally operative position, said drum having means cooperating with said manually controlled means to stop the drum with said clamping means opposite said edge of said table after actuation of said manually controlled means.
14. In a duplicating machine, a frame, a drum rotatably journalled therein, means for rotating said drum, a master sheet table movably mounted on said frame for movement between a functionally operative position with one edge adjacent said drum and a functionally inoperative position,
master sheet clamping means on said drum, a member on said drum movable with respect to said drum to open said clamping means, said member having a portion projecting from the drum, a hand lever having means to hold said table in functionally inoperative position, and means controlled by said hand lever for moving said member as the drum rotates to thereby open said clamping means and stop means on said drum cooperating with said hand lever to stop the drum after the clamping meanshas been opened. -V

In a duplicating machine, a frame, a duplieating drum rotatably journalled therein, master sheet clamping means on said drum, means for opening said clamping means as the drum rotates, a master sheet table, manually controlled stop means for stopping said drum with the clamping means aligned with said table, and a common actuating member for said stop means and said clamp opening means.
16. In a duplicating machine, a rotatable duplicating drum, master sheet clamping means on said drum, means to guide a master sheet to said drum. a hand lever, means connected with said lever and said drum adapted upon movement of said lever into functionally operative position to open said clamping means and position the open clamping means in'alignment with said guide means.
17. In a duplicating machine, a frame, a duplicating drum rotatably mounted in said frame, a lever pivoted on said frame, master sheet clamping means on said drum, guide means on said frame for aligning the edge of a master sheet with said drum, and positioning means on the lever and drum to position the clamping means in alignment with said guide means.
18. In a duplicating machine, a frame, a duplicating drum rotatably journalled therein, master sheet clamping means on said drum, means for opening said clamping means, a master sheet guide, manually controlled means for positioning the drum with the clamping means in alignment with said guide, anda lever on the frame operating said positioning means and said clamp opening means. sf'
