UNITED STATES PATENToFFlcl-z 2,040,536 CASTRATION CLAMP Noah E. Schoonover, Fort Rice, N. Dak., assignor of forty-five per cent to Fred Westerman, Fort Rice, N. Dak.
Application October 5, 1934, SeralNo. 747,051 1 Claim. (Cl. 12S-306) This invention relates to a castration clamp, or extends at substantially right angles to the and has for its principal object the production of shank portion I9 of the lever I 6 and th1s operatjaw and a movable jaw which movable jaw is its upper edge for the purpose hereinafter de-v adapted to be forced into clamping engagement scribed. The shank portion I9 of the lever I6 with the stationary jaw. carries a link 2I which link is adapted to engage A further object of this invention is the producthe rack 22 carried by the shank I I for the purtion of a castration clamp which is so constructed pose of holding the lever I6 in a closed position as to effectively crush the cord or testicle sack such as is shown in Figure 1. in such a manner as to prevent the breaking of An adjustable jaw 23 having a shank portion the skin or the drawing of blood. 24 is slidably mounted between theV plates I3 and A still further object of this invention is the the adjustable jaw 23 is provided with a rounded provision of a simple and efcient means for tiltupper face 25 similar to the rounded lower face ing the adjustable jaw in such a manner as to I2 of the jaw I0 to provide a smooth contacting prevent the sack or cord from moving outwardly Clamping face thereby avoiding presentation of A still further object of this invention is the ated upon. The shank portion 24 of the adjustproduction of a simple and ecient mounting for able jaw 23 is provided with an arc-shaped lon-A 0 the adjustable jaw of the clamp whereby the adgitlldl'nally @Xtendng S1017 26 thlOllgh Which S1017 justable jaw will be tilted with respect to the staextends a guiding pin or bolt 2'I carried by the With these and other objects in view this in- A second guiding slot 29 is formed in the shank vention consists in certain combinations and con- 24 below the arc-shaped slot 26. This guiding structions which will appear throughout the folslot 29 extends on an incline or at an angle to lowing specification and claims, the longitudinal axis of the shank 24, the slot 29 In the drawing: being pitched from its lower end near the for- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the clamp in a Ward edge 30 of the shank 24 toward its top near closed position; the inner edge 28 of the Shank 24, as shown in Figure 2 is a front elevation of the clamp; Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the clamp in an AH aIlChOliUs Din 3| iS Carried by the plates I3 open position, certain parts being broken away below the pin 21 and extends through the slot and shown in section; and 29.
Figure 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Secured to the shank 24 near its upper end by Figure 1. means of a suitable eye or other securing means By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that 32 is a tension coil spring 33, the lower end of the I0 designates the stationary jaw which is carspring 33 being secured to a yoke 34, the yoke 34 ried by an elongated shank II constitutingahanbeing anchored upon the bolt or pin I8 and dle. The stationary jaw I0 extends at substanstraddling the arms I5, as shown in the drawtially right angles to the shank I I and is provided ing. with a rounded lower face I2 to provide a smooth 'I'he operation of the device is as follows:- contacting face in order to avoid presentation The cord or testicle sack is placed between the of any sharp or cutting edges. 'Ihe shank II jaws I 0 and 23, and by carefully considering Figcarries a pair of guiding plates I3 which plates ure 3, it wlll be seen that the upper face 25 of are securely held against the faces of the shank the jaw 23 is slightly tilted tof restrict the open- II by means of suitable rivets I4. Each plate I3 ing between the outer ends of the jaw I0 and jaw is provided near its lower end with a. projecting 23 when the jaws are in an open position This arm I5 between the outer ends of which arms I5 will tend to prevent the cord or sack from slipping outer end II pivotally mounted upon the supor movable jaw 23 is moved to a closed position. porting pin or bolt I8. This bolt or pin I8 is This tilting position of the jaw 25 is accomplished carried by the outer ends of the arms I5. The by the position 0f the pin 23 and the Din 27 withouter end I'I of the operating lever I6 is offset in the respective slots 26 and 29. When these pins 2 ,Y s are in the upper ends of the slots 26 and 29, the shank 24 will be inclined, as shown in Figure 3, 23 is moved toward the jaw I0 the pin 3| by sliding 1n the inclined slot 29 will cause the shank 24 to move toward the shank I I and to a substantially parallel position and the arcshaped slot 26 by riding over the pin 21 will also assist in moving the shank 24 to a parallel position with respect to the shank I I. The shank 24 is moved longitudinally or to a closed position'with respect to the jawY I0 by swinging toward the shank I I thereby causing the cam face 20 to engage the lower end of the shank 24 and push the shank 24 longitudinally between the plates I3 to a clamping or closed position, such as is shown in Figure 1. The lever I6 may be held in this clamped position through the medium of the link 2| engaging the rack 22. When it is desired to move the adjustable jaw 23 to an open position, the lever I6 may be swung to the position shown in Figure 3 and the coil spring 33 will immediately pull the shank 24 downwardly to an open position and away from the inner face of the shank II, such as is shown in Figure 3, causing the shank 24 to assume an inclined position, the lower end of the shank 24 being at all times in frictional engagement with the cam face 2l) through the medium of the coil spring 33.
It should be understood that certain detail changes inthe mechanical construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be emthe lever I6 ployed without departing from the spirit of the invention so long as such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new isz- A clamp of the class described comprising a stationary jaw, a shank supporting the stationary jaw, plates carried bythe stationary jaw and extending laterally thereof, a movable jaw having a shank slidably mounted between said plates, lever means engaging said movable jaw for moving said movable jaw in one direction longitudinally of the plates, spring means for automatically drawing the movable jaw to an open position when pressure is released from said lever means, af pin carried by said plates, an inclined guiding slot formed in said shank of said movable jaw, said slot being inclined toward the inner face of the shank from its bottom toward the top thereof whereby said shank o said adjustable jaw will be inclined outwardly at its bottom when said shank is in its lower position, and whereby said shank of said adjustable jaw will extend substantially parallel to` the shank of the stationary jaw when the stationary jaw is in a closed position, a longitudinally extending arcshaped slot. formed in the shank oi the adjustable jaw, and a pin carried by the plates extending through said arc-shapedslot.
