UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN HILL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TWINE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,913, dated May 21, 1878; application filed April 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN HILL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Take- Up for Twine-Holders, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a frontelevation, partly in section, of my improved take'up. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a take-up for twine-holders which will raise the free end of the twine from the counter after it has been detached from the bundle being tied.
The invention consists in a tube having at its upper end arin g, by which it is suspended, and having at its lower end a ring for supportin g the twine basket or holder, and containing a sliding weight, which is provided with an eye that receives the twine, which passes through eyelets in the opposite sides of the upper end of the tube.
Referring to the drawing, A is a tube having in one side a slot, b, and having in its upper end a plug orend piece, a, and in its lower end an end piece, (1. To the upper end is attached a ring, 6, by which the device is suspended, and to the lower end is attached an eye, f, for receiving the chains that suspend the twine-basket g.
In diametrically opposite sides of the tube A, near its upper end, there are eyeletholes h, and within the tube is loosely fitted a weight, 0', having a pin, 3', that projects through the slot 1), and having at the upper end an eye, k, for receiving the twine. When a new ball of twine is placed in the basket 9, the end of the twine is putthrough an eye, 1, that projects from the side of the tube A. The tube is then inverted, when the eye k of the weight and the eyeletholes h are in line, and the twine may be readily passed through all three at once.
By drawing upon the' twine the weight 2' is raised to the upper end of the tube before the twine comes from the ball, and when the package is tied and the twine broken the dropping of the Weight in the tube takes up the twine, so as'to raise the free end thereof from the counter and out of the Way.
When it is desired to use the take-up in connection with a fixed twine-holder, the twine is taken first through the eyelets, and is used from the eye, as indicated in dotted lines.
l do not confine myself to the exact construction herein set forth, as the tube may be and pin on the weight may be dispensed with.
Having thus fully describedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The slotted tube A, having suspension-rings cf, eye l, and eyelets h, and the weight i, having the pin j and eye 70, in combination, substantially as herein shown and described.
