10 Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in stands, and particularly to so-called lampstands which are adjustable to vary the direction of the projected light. Such stands are adapted to be placed upon a table or to be hung upon the headboard of a bed, or used in other situations.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a superior adjustable lamp-stand combining neat and attractive appearance with low cost for manufacture.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a superior adjustable lamp-stand including a base, an arm slidable with respect to the said base and carrying a lamp, and having a simple and effective construction and arrangement of parts whereby the wiring leading to the lamp is concealed without, however, precluding the convenient adjustment of the'lamp.
With the above and other objects in View, as will appear to those skilled in the art from the following, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing and appended claims, the present invention includes all features disclosed therein which are novel over the prior art.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of an adjustable lamp-stand embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a view thereof in rear elevation;
Fig. 3 is a vertical, central, sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a broken detail sectional View taken on any one of the lines 4-4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a broken, vertical, sectional View taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
The particular adjustable lamp-stand herein chosen for illustration includes an. inverted cupshaped sheet-metal base or mounting-member,
generally designated by the numeral I0 and including a topwall I I and a downwardly-extending side-harige or skirt I2. The lower edge of the skirt I2 is curled as at I3 to provide a smooth, non-marring surface for resting upon a table or the like.
Mounted upon the base Ill and forming a unit therewith is a cylindrical guide-head I4 reduced in diameter at its lower end to provide a depending, hollow, externally-threaded stem I5 of lesser diameter than the upper main-portion of the guide-head and resulting in the formation of a downwardly-facing stop-shoulder I6, which engages with the upper surface of the top-wall II of the base I0 around a central-passage I'I therein through which the stem I5 extends down- (Cl. 24U-81) wardly. The stem I5 of the guide-head I4 also extends downwardly through a central-passage I8 formed in a reinforcing-plate I9 located within the base Ill and clamped against the under-A side of the top-wall II thereof by means of a 5 clamping-nut 2G threaded onto the lower end of the stem I5.
The guide-head I4 is formed diametrically with a guide-passage or guide-way 2| which is intersected by the vertical-passage 22 in the stem I5. 10 The guide-passage 2|, just referred to, receives a slidable substantially-semicircular curved supporting-arm 23 and is of rectangular form in cross-section and is sized to receive the 'supporting-arm 23 with an easy sliding t. The sup-'15 porting-arm 23 may, if desired, be provided at its lower end with a terminal-knob or stop 24 and at its upper end rigidly carries an electric-lamp socket 25 which may be of any desired form and which carries an electric bulb 26 and a down- 20 wardly-opening hemispherical shade 2l. The curvature of the shade 2l substantially conforms to the curvature of the curved supporting-arm 23 and attractively complements the same.
The supporting-arm 23 is of U-shaped form in 25 cross-section, providing a channel 28 which opens on the outside of the curve described by the supporting-arm and which receives one or more suitable wires 29 leading at one end to the socket 25 to supply current to the bulb 26. The said 30 wire 29, opposite the socket 25, leads out of the channel 28 in the supporting-arm 23 downwardly through the vertical-passage 22 in the guidehead I4 and thence radially across the space within the inverted cup-shaped base II and 35 outwardly through a ferrule 3D mounted in an opening in the flange or skirt I2 of the base I0.
The curved supporting-arm 23 is adapted to slide through the diametrical guide-passage 2I in the guide-head I4 to permit changes in inclination of the shade 2l and bulb 26 and, owing to the fact that the curved channel 28 in the supporting-arm in effect intersects, whatever its position of adjustment, the vertical-passage 22 in the guide-head I4, the change in adjustment 45 before referred to may be made without cramping the wire 29. If the supporting-arm 23 is adjusted in a clockwise direction from the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1, the added length of the wire 29 will pull in through the ferrule 30 50 and upwardly through the passage 22 in the guide-head I 4. When the supporting-arm 23 is moved in the reverse direction (counterclockwise), a less length of wire will be required to reach the socket 25, and after such adjustment, 55
a slight pull upon the portion of the wire extending outwardly through the ferrule 30 will tauten the same and cause it to lie smoothly and snugly in the channel 28 For the purpose of clamping the supportingarm 23 in any desired position of adjustment, the guide-head I4 is provided in its upper end with a vertical threaded bore 3| intersecting the diametrical-passage 2| and receiving the threaded shank 32 of a clamping-screw, generally designated by the numeral 33 and bearing against the upper surface of the supporting-arm 23. The said clamping-screw is provided with a knurled or milled head 34 adapted to be conveniently gripped by the ngers.
Owing to the polygonal cross-sectional form of the guide-passage 2l through the guide-head I4 and the substantially-corresponding polygonal transverse form of the supporting-arm 23, the said arm is prevented from unduly rocking laterally with respect kto the base I0.
If desired, the base lll may be provided with suitable mea-ns such as is now generally in use, by means of which the lamp-stand may be hung .from .theheadboardfof a bed or from other ver- .tical surfaces.
The invention may be carried out in other ,specific ways than that herein set forth without .departing from thespirit and essential charac- `teristics of the invention, and the present embodiment is therefore to be considered in all respects .as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalencyrange of the appended claims are intended to be `embraced therein.
I claim:
1. An adjustablelamp-stand comprising a base .having a guide-way therein and a wire-passage intersecting the said guide-way; and a longitudinally-curved supporting-arm slidable in the guide-wayin the said base and having a curved longitudinal Wire-channel opening laterally through-one of its sides and intersecting the wirepassage inthe said base with respect to which it `is vslidable.
42. Anadjustable lamp-stand comprising a base having a guide-way therein and a wire-passage substantially-perpendicular to and intersecting the `said guide-Way; and a longitudinally-curved supporting-armslidable in the guide-way in the .said base and having a curved longitudinal wirechannel opening laterally through one of its sides and .intersecting the wire-passage in the said 4base with respect to Awhich itis slidable.
.3. An adjustable llamp-stand comprising a base having `a guide-way 4therein and a wire-passage intersecting the said guide-way; and a longitudinally-curved supporting-arm slidable in vthe 4guide-Way in the said base and of U-shaped form in cross-section and providing a curved longitudinal wire-channel opening laterally through one of -its sides and intersecting thewire-passage .in the said base with respect to which it is slidable.
4. .An adjustable rlamp-stand comprising a. base having a guide-way therein and a wire passage substantially-perpendicular to and intersecting rthe said guide-way; and a longitudinally-curved supporting-arm slidable in the guide-way in the said base and of U-shaped form in cross-section and providing a curved longitudinal wire-channel opening laterally through one of its sides and intersecting the wire-passage in the said base with respect to which it is slidable.
5. An adjustable lamp-stand comprising a base having a guide-way therein and a wire-passage intersecting the said guide-way; and a longitudinally-curved supporting-arm slidable in the guide-way in the said base and having a curved longitudinal wire-channel opening laterally through the side thereof of the greatest curvature and intersecting the wire-passage in the said base with respect to which it is slidable.
6. An adjustable lamp-stand comprising a base having a transversely-polygonal guide-way therein and a wire-passage intersecting the said guideway; and a transversely-polygonal longitudinally-curved supporting-arm slidable in the guideway in the said base and having a curved longitudinal wire-channel opening laterally through one of its sides and intersecting the wire-passage inthe said base with respect to which it is slidable.
'7. An adjustable lamp-stand comprising a holporting-arm slidable in the guide-way in the said base and having a curved longitudinal wirechannel opening laterally through one of its sides and intersecting the wire-passage in the said base with respect to which it is slidable.
8. An adjustable lamp-stand comprising a hollow base having a guide-Way therein, a wire-passage substantially-perpendicular to and intersecting the said guide-way at one end and leading to the interior of the hollow base; and a longitudinally-curved supporting-arm slidable in the guide-way in the said base and having a curved longitudinal wire-channel opening laterally through one of its sides and intersecting the wirepassage in the said base with respect to which it is slidable.
9. An adjustable lamp-stand comprising a hollow base having a guide-way therein, a transversely-polygonal wire-passage also therein and intersecting the said guide-way at one end and leading yto the interior of the hollow base; and
a transversely-polygonal longitudinally-curved supporting-arm slidable in the guide-way in the said base and having a curved longitudinal wirechannel opening laterally through one of its sides and intersecting the wire-passage in the
