APYI'IH y 1936- s. JOHNSON 2,03Z24Q CLUTCH DEVICE ADAPTED FOR SPRAY GUNS Filed Sept. 25, 1933 v INVENTOR /Z- 5W6? k/o/mson ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 14, 1936,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE v Swan Johnson, Tujunga, Calif. Application September 25, 1933, Serial No. 690,966v
8 Claims.
This invention relates to a clutching device especially applicable to use in fastening a cup or container to a spray gun cap or the like but not limited to such use. It appertains to a construction enabling quick and ready removal and replacement of such cups. 7
The methods now commonly used of fastening cups containing spray fluid to a spray gun head involves the use of some form of gasket to act as a seal in forming leak tight joints. The gaskets currently used deteriorate due to buckling, swelling, breaking and drying out. They become hard under usage allowing the spray fluid to leak past the gasket with attendant interference with the operation of the gun and damage to the surface being coated. It is desirable to provide such guns with cups or containers for the spray fluid. In the case of lacquers and colored spray fluids, where a' change from a one color to another has been desired, it has been the common practice to remove the cup, empty it of its contents, wash the cup and fill it with the fluid of the color desired. Such cups are commonly formed of metal. Much material is wasted in emptying and re,- cleaning the cup. One of the objects of this invention is to provide a cup clutch adapted. for holding metal or less expensive cups such as paper or cardboard cups. Thus, when working on objects requiring different colors, the operator may use a single metal cup for standard colors and'may use inexpensive paper or composition cups for colors for which he does not have. much use, so that the latter may be thrown away thereby doing away with the necessity of cleaning the cups and saving time.
An object of this inventionis to provide a novel clutching structure for holding acylindrical shell member and a coacting inserted cylindrical member together. Other objects of this invention are to provide a clutching device adaptable to standard spray gun heads and having any or all of the following features: A cap having an expansible neck insertable in a flexible side wall cup; a cap having an expansible neck and a lateral external shoulder for the rim of the cup to abut, the neck having a substantially flat outer surface engageable with the interior of the cup' whereby an .effective seal may be provided; a cap having a neck such that the cup may be easily slipped thereon, clutched and released.
These objects are accomplished by means of the embodiments of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a conventional type of spray gun having one embodiment of my invention shown in section; Fig. 21$ 2. sec- I tional view as seen on the plane indicated by 2-2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view partly broken away and in section showing a spray gun cap embodying another form of my invention; and Fig. 4 is a perspective viewshowing still another form of my invention as embodied in a spray gun cap, a part of the cap being broken out and a section shown.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, a preferred form of my invention is illustrated therein. A spray gun A is shown with a cup B attached. The cup is readily detachable and may be of some flexible material such as paper, cardboard, thin metal. a
The cap 5 is secured to the spray gun pipe .6 by any convenient means such as the conventional nuts. It has an underhanging upperneck portion 1 providing a lateral external shoulder 8. Secured to the upper neck portion 1 and spaced therefrom is a lower neck portion 9 fastened thereto by pins Ill. The portions 1 and 9 are concentric and have the same external diameter so as to provide a neck body" with a space for reception of a ring ll. a
The ring H is of the same external diameter as the portions 1 and 9. It is secured on the neck by pins l0 fitting in enlarged holes l2 so that ring ll may be moved to a position eccentric to the neck. Intermediate holes l2 in ring II is a hole I3. A hole I 4 is provided in the neck portion land a recess IS in neck portion 9. Hole l4 and recess. I5: are alined, and hole i3 is radially offset inwardly. Disposed inholes l4, I3 and recess I 5 is a cam pin l6 having a cam surface l'l; An arm I8 is provided on pin in Figs. 1 and 2, the high portion of the cam engages the outer portion of hole I 3. The ring H isheld slightly offset from the neck or eccentric thereto. By turning the cam pin through a half revolution, the low part of cam l1 faces the outer portion of hole l3 and the ring H is free to be moved inwardly to a position concentric with the neck. With the cam positioned one half turn from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the ring I I is free to be moved to concentric position with the neck. Cup '3 may be slipped over the neck to have its lip edge abut shoulder 8. The handle l8 may then be grasped and the. cam turned one half revolution to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This causes the ring ,II to be moved to an offset position and the overalldt ameter of the neck enlarged to firmly grip the inner wall of cup B. Since the ring II is of the I6 for turning the cam pin. In the position shown same diameter as the body of the neck, the axis of the neck passing through pin it is elongated and the axis at right angles thereto is maintained at a constant length. The flat faces of the body of the neck and the ring H insure a substantial area of contact with the cup and insure a leak tight fit. By turning the cam pin 16 through one half revolution the clutching grip on the cup is released, and the latter may be easily slipped off the neck for replacement or cleaning.
Referring to Fig. 3, the head 19 of the cap has a split ring 20 attached thereto to form a neck. This ring is resilient and is secured to the head by pins 2| diametrically opposite to one another with the ring gap intermediate. The cap is automatic in its gripping action on a cup slipped thereon. The cup may be abutted against shoulder 22.
Referring to Fig. 4, a cap is shown with a. head 23. To this head is attached a ring carrier 24 having a cylindrical portion 25 with a bead 26. Carried in the groove formed by bead 26 and the overhanging bead is a split ring 21 of resilient material. This structure is automatic in its gripping action on the cup as will be apparent.
