Description

O. M USES.
Straw Cutter.
Patented May 25, 1858.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OREN MOSES, OF MALONE, NEW YORK.
STRAW-GUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,361, dated May 25, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. OREN Moses, of Malone, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Straw-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved straw cutter; Figs. 2 and 3, views of opposite sides of the same, and Fig. 4, a vertical longitudinal section in the line w, w, of Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate like parts ,in all the figures.
The feeding box A, and the supporting frame of my improved straw cutter, may be constructed in the usual manner.
The knives a of my improved straw cutter are'secured in oblique positions to disks 6 on the shaft 6; which shaft is placed in front of the feeding box and works in suitable bearings 7c, is, projecting forward from the front supporting legs h, h, and so located that the said knives, when the shaft 6, is rotated, will pass obliquelyin front of and in close proximity to the rest Z, at the forward end of the bottom of the feeding box.
The driving shaft (1;, of my improved straw cutter, works in bearings 01, a, which are bolted to and rise from the bearings 70, 7c, of the knife shaft Z); a cog wheel on the said driving shaft, works into a pinion on the shaft 6, and thereby imparts a rapid motion to it; a pinion on the opposite end of said driving shaft, works into a cog wheel on the journal of the toothed feeding roller F, and thereby imparts a slow motion to said roller.
The journals 0, 0, of the toothed feeding roller F, are received into curved slots m, m, in the guard plates 9, g, and in the upper ends of the legs 72,, h, the said journals 0, c, are connected to the driving shaft (1, by means of the properly perforated metallic plates e, e, which are received into recesses between the guard plates 9, g, and the inner sides of the upper portions of the legs h, h, which arrangement, allows the said roller F,
to rise and fall, without changing its distance from the driving shaft a, or interfering with the proper working of the gearing which connects the one with the other.
Spiral, or other suitable springs, are placed in the slots m, m, above the journals 0, c, as shown in Fig. 2, which cause the roller F, to be always pressed down upon and to securely hold the straw, or other article, while it is being operated upon by the knives. To prevent the straw from being drawn around the feeding roller F, I combine a self-acting scraping comb (l, with the connecting bearing plates 6, e, as represented in Figs. 1, and r.
It will be perceived thatthe distance between the teeth of the said comb (Z, and the teeth of the feeding roller F, and the relative position of the former to the latter, will' always be the same, whether the roller be in its lowest position, when a thin layer of straw is fed into the machine, or in its highest position, when a thick layer of straw is fed into the mahcine. The ends of the feeding roller F, work so closely against the guard plates g, g, which are secured to the front ends of the wooden sides of the feeding box, as to prevent the straw from working in between them.
I am aware that a toothed vibrating feeding roller has been used in straw cutters in conjunction with a rigid cleaning comb, and therefore what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the bridle pieces or connecting plates 6, 6, attached to cleaning comb d, with driving shaft a, and journals 0, c, of feeding roller F, the whole being constructed for operation conjointly with feed box A, rest Z, shaft 5 disks t, and knives z, in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
The above specification of my new and useful improvements in straw cutters, signed and witnessed this 26th day of February OREN MOSES. Witnesses:
N. D. MEEKIN, JOHN L. Loeerrr.
