UNITED STATES B. B. MEACHAM, OF RIDLYVILLE, FLORIDA.
CORN-HUSKER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,360, dated May 25, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, B. B. MEACHAM, of Ridlyville, in the county of Liberty and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Husking Corn; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a vertical central section of my improvement. Fig. 2, is a section of ditto, taken in the line m, m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3,

This invention consists in attaching a cutting device to a wheel which is placed below a trough or spout, the cutting device and wheel being so constructed and arranged that as the ears of corn are fed down to it, the butts will be cut off from the ears at their junction with. them, the husks stripped from the ears and the ears conducted by the wheel into a discharge trough or spout, the whole forming a very simple and efficientdevice for the purpose.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a rectangular frame which may be constructed of either wood or metal, and B, is a hopper placed on the upper part of the framing and having an inclined spout C. projecting from the bottom thereof.
D, is a shaft which is placed in the frame A, said shaft having a crank a, or driving pulley, Z), at one end. On the shaft D, at about its center a wheel E is placed, said wheel being grooved circumferentially and having an oblique partition ledge c extend ing across its groove, the wheel having a recess or opening cl, at one side, at one end of the partition or ledge 0. A smaller or narrower groove 6, is also made circumferentially in the wheel E, as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
F, is a bar which passes transversely through the wheel E, said bar passing through a mortise in the wheel and adjusted therein nearer to or farther from the shaft D, by means of set screws f. To the outer surface of the bar F, a knife or cutter g, is attached. This cutter is of pointed form as shown clearly in Fig. 3, and a forked plate 72,, which is attached to an arm 2', fits over the knife or cutter, the point of the knife or cutter projecting through the fork. The arm r', of the plate 71., projects through the side of the wheel and its outer end is bent at right angles with its other part as shown clearly at j, Figs. 2 and 3.
G, is an inclined trough or spout which is placed in the frame A, the upper end of said trough or spout being by the side of the wheel E, as shown in Fig. 2.
The operation is as follows: The shaft D, is rotated in any proper manner and the ears of corn in the husk are placed one by one butt foremost in the spout C, the hopper being filled with ears. The ears, shown in red, pass down the spout C, and their butts pass into the groove 6, in the wheel E, and as the knife or cutter 9, passes around itcuts the butt from the ear, directly atits junction with the ear, the knife or cutter being properly adjusted to effect this by adjusting the bar F, and the knife or cutter strips the husks from the ear, the husks adhering to the butt. The car being thereby deprived of its integuments is by means of the oblique partition or ledge c, conveyed into the upper end of the trough or spout G, from whence they fall into any proper receptacle prepared to receive them. The butt and husks which adhere to the knife or cutter g, are forced therefrom by the forked plate h, which is moved outward so as to strip the knife or cutter in consequence of the outer bent portion 7', striking against a projection in, on the trough or spout Gr. The butts with the husks attached drop directly downward so as to be effectually separated from the ears.
This invention has been practically tested and it operates well.
The device may be constructed ata small cost, and it may be readily kept in working order as there are no parts liable to get out of repair.
