The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in cigarettes and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a cigarette having a novel form of tip which will protect the cigarette against crushing in the pocket or mouth and which will prevent the lips of the smoker from sticking to the cigarette.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a novel method of applying the tip, said method being such that the cigarette will draw freely at all times.

The foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:

Figure l is a view in side elevation, showing a cigarette with a pin driven thereinto prior to the application of the tip.

Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section showing a means for applying the tip without sealing the end thereof.

Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of a completed cigarette in accordance with the present invention.

Fig. 4 is a view partially in side elevation and partially in section of a completed cigarette.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral I designates a cigarette of the usual form, said cigarette comprising a paper wrapper 2 and a tobacco filler 3. The reference numeral 4 designates the tip which has been applied to one end portion of the cigarette l.

The tip 4 is preferably of paraifin, wax, or similar material which is melted and applied to the cigarette in substantially liquid form and then permitted to dry and harden. The tip may be applied through the medium of any suitable apparatus. For example, as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the tip may be applied by dipping the cigarette into the paraffin, wax, or other material placed in a container 5. Prior to or during the application of the tip, a pin 6 is inserted longitudinally in the end portion of the cigarette to which the tip is to be applied. This pin is left in the cigarette during the tip applying operation and until said tip has dried and hardened after which the pin is removed, leaving a smoke passage 1, as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 4 of the drawing. This also, of course, leaves an opening in the tip which would otherwise seal this end of the cigarette. It will also be seen that the pin 6 will permit the paraffin, wax, or other material to penetrate a distance into the filler 3 without sealing the cigarette. The tip 4 will prevent the tobacco from coming out of the wrapper 2 into the mouth of the smoker and will also prevent said tobacco from falling out of this end of the cigarette into the package or tin. This, of course, constitutes an important and desirable feature of the invention.

In Fig. 2 of the drawing, the substantially liquid tipping material is designated by the reference numeral 8. This material 8 preferably contains a coloring agent. Obviously, various colors may be used.

It is believed that the many advantages of a cigarette and method of making the same in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes or modifications may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:-

The herein described method consisting in partly inserting a pin in one end of a cigarette, then inserting that end of the cigarette containing the pin in a receptacle having a flat bottom to a point where the outer end of the pin will rest on the bottom, whereby said end of the cigarette is spaced from the bottom, said receptacle containing liquid material which will solidify when dry to form a tip for said one end of the cigarette, the level of the liquid in the receptacle being below the end of the pin in the cigarette, then removing the cigarette, and finally removing the pin after the coating has solidified.
