Application July 24, 1934, Serial No. 736,770 3 Claims. (01. 229-16) This invention relates to boxes or similar containers such as made from foldable box-board material.
Boxes of this type are generally made from 5 blanks cut to proper shape and folded to form the bottom and side walls, end flaps, etc. Prior to the folding operation it has been the practice to score or crease the blanks so as to facilitate folding. However these scores or creases have always been formed in one side only of the blank with the result that when the blank has been folded, the displaced material produced by scoring or grooving the blank has come together in the corners between the folded portions with the 5 result that objectionable protuberances have been produced which have tended to break the box at the corners or else leave unsightly projecting nodes.
The present invention has for an object the novel arrangement of the scores or creases whereby there will be no piling up of displaced material at the corners when the blank is folded, the resultant box thus being free fromobjectionable projecting nodes and being left unbroken and of 5 smooth finished appearance at each corner.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts and in certain steps of the method hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts and in the disclosed method without departing from the spirit of the'invention as claimed.

V In carrying out the invention blanks are cut from a web of box-board material and, as shown particularly in Figure 1, the blank can consist of a main or bottom portion l, side portions 2 having end flaps 3, and transverse flaps 4 at the ends of the body portion l. During the formation of the blank the same is provided in one surface with scores or creases 5 which are pressed thereinto to provide corresponding ribs 6 on the opposed surface of the blank. These creases or scores 5 and ribs 6 serve, in the present instance, to separate the side portions '2 from the portion l of the blank.
Additional scores or creases 1 are pressed into that surface of the blank from which the ribs 6 project and are extended transversely of the blank so as to divide the flaps 3 and 4 from the portions I and 2. The material displaced by the formation of the creases or scores 1 forms transverse ribs 8 extending from that surface of the blank containing the creases or scores 5. It will be apparent thatby creasing the blank at 5, the side portions 2 can readily be folded to upstanding positions as shown in Figures 3 to 6, this folding action resulting in the spreading of the scores or creases 5 and the transverse compression of the ribs 6. As the ribs 6 terminateat the transverse scores or creases I it will be obvious that when the flaps 3 and 4 are subsequently folded to upstanding positions as in Figures 3 and 6 there will be no material to be displaced inwardly toward the ends of the ribs 6 and consequently said ends will not be additionally compressed nor will displaced material be piled up in the corners of the box. On the contrary the folding of the ends 3 and 4 will merely cause them to close the creases or scores I and flatten out the ribs 8, the end flaps coming snugly against the ends of the ribs 6 and forming well finished corners free of projecting nodes or other displaced material. Furthermore all danger of fracturing the material at the corners due to excessive crowding thereof is eliminated.
It is to be understood that the arrangement of creases herein described need not be restricted to box-board containers of any particular design but can be embodied in various types of boxes made of such material.
What is claimed is:
l. The method of producing a container of boxboard material which includes the step of forming a blank with side, end, bottom, and corner r flap portions, said flap portions being separated from the end portions by slits, separating the side portions-from the bottom portion by creases or scores in the outer or bottom surface of the blank, thereby producing corresponding ribs on iii a spending ribs on the outer or bottom surface.
2. The method of producing a container of boxboard material which includes the step of forming a blank with side, end, bottom, and corner flap portions, said flap portions being separated from the end portions by slits, separating the side portions from the bottom portion by creases or scores in the outer or bottom surface of the blank, thereby producing corresponding ribs on the opposite surface alining with and terminating at the slits, and separating the sides from the flaps and the end portions from the bottom portion by creases or scores in the inner or upper surface of the blank, thereby to provide corresponding ribs on the outer or bottom surface, thereafter folding the sides upwardly to position the inner or top rib in the angle formed by the sides and bottom portion, and finally bending or folding the flaps and end portions laterally and upwardly respectively with the creases or scores in the angles formed thereby with the sides and bottom.
3. A blank for use in the formation of a container, including a bottom portion, end portions, side portions, and flaps at the ends of the side portions and separated from the end portions by slits, there being creases or scores in the bottom surface of the blank dividing the side portions from the bottom portion and providing corresponding top ribs alining with and terminating at the slits, and creases or scores in the top surface of the blank dividing the side portions from the flaps and the end portions from the bottom portion, and providing corresponding ribs on the bottom portion.
