Description
1935- J. GOTTLIEB IDENTIFYING MEANS FOR THREAD AND YARN PACKAGES Filed Feb. 11, 1955 15 scription proceeds when taken Patented Dec. 31, 1935 IDENTIFYING MEANS FOR, THEE AND YARN PACKAGES Jacob Gottlieb, Gastonia, N. 0.
Application February 11,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to means for identifying thread and yarn packages and more especially to a suitably colored cap adapted to be placed over the tip of the yarn or thread holders, such as tubes, spools, cones and the like, so that an identifying color can be imparted to the thread and yarn holders without the necessity of stocking a great quantity of difierently colored holders.
It is a common custom among manufacturers to require thread and yarn bought by them to be placed by the manufacturer on suitable holders, such as spools, cones, tubes and the like, having a particular color imparted to the tip of the holders. The tips of the yarn or thread holders such as cones, tubes, spools and the like usually are treated with paint or enamel to color the same and when an order is received by a thread or yarn manufacturer the purchaser usually designates the color he wishes on the end of the tube, cone, spool or the like as this color is used in his manufacturing establishment for purposes of identifying the position on a particular machine where this particular thread or yarn is placed or for the use to or for other pLuposes. This results in the thread or yarn manufacturer being compelled to carry in stock a great quantity of differently colored tubes in order to be ready to satisfy the demands of a purchaser for a particular color.
I have devised means whereby this carrying of a large stock is not necessary due to the fact M that I can place on the tips of the yarn and thread holders a suitable cap made of any suitable material such as sheet metal, cellulose, composition pulp and the like, and carry these caps in stock in various colors so that the cap can be inserted onto the holders and the thread or yarn wound thereonto so that the tip of the holder which is visible after the thread or yarn is wound thereonto has the proper color to satisfy the demands of the purchasers.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the dein connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is an elevation of a cone equipped with an identifying cap showing the yarn which is to be wound thereon in dotted line position;
Figure 2 is an isometric view of a cap for the tip of a cone;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the upper end of a cone and showing my cap applied thereto;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showwhich it is to be applied 1935, Serial No. 6,042 (Cl. 402) ing a cap fitted onto therein;
Figure 5 is an isometric view of another form of holder having a different form of identifying cap thereon;
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view taken through the upper end of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 5 showing the upper end of Figure 5 but showing a different form of cap secured on the end of-spools;
Figure 8 is a vertical sectional view taken through the upper end of Figure 7.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, the numeral # 8 indicates a cone on which there is placed a suitably colored cap H and then the yarn I2 is wound thereon so that the tip of the cap only is visible from the upper end of the packages and therefore this identifies the package with the desired color. The yarn also holds the cap on the cone, should it have a tendency to comeoff of the cone. i
In some instances, a cone which is designated by ifia, has a hole i l therein and in such instances I provide a cap I in similar to cap I I, except that it has a hole 5 8 therein, coinciding with hole is in the cone.
For tubes, spools and the like other identifying means must be provided and in Figures 5 and 6, I have shown an annular member ll, which is suitably colored, to fit over the upper end of tubular portion l5 of a spool which usually has a beveled base It. In some instances this tubular portion l5 would not have the beveled base but would be a plain tube and in which event an annular member ll could be placed over either one or both ends of the tubular member iii.
In Figures 7 and 8 a slightly different form of identifying means is shown in which tube I5 is adaptedto have a cap 55 fitted thereover which entirely closes the end of the tube if such identifying means should be desired. This is shown in section in Figure 8 and shows a tight fit between cap it and tube l5.
These identifying caps can be stamped from cellulose, celluloid, pulp material, metal or any desired material and can be colored either before or after manufacture in various colors and carried in stock so that they can be inserted on the end of the tubes, cones, spools and the like, and thread wound thereonto, which thread will cover the remaining portion of this spool, cone, tube and the like, and therefore the cap will impart the proper color to the packages.
Preferably, the thread or yarn in all forms of the invention, covers a portion of the identifying a cone having a perroration' cap for presenting an appearance of the whole holder being colored, and also for assisting in holding the identifying means on the holder, but this is not a requirement as the identification is also efiective if no portion thereof is covered with thread or yarn.
In the drawing and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the
scope of the invention being set forth in the ap pended claim.
I claim:
In combination with a conical yarn holder having yarn wound thereon, an identifying means comprising a hollow conical member positioned over the tip of the holder and extending between the holder and the yarn wound thereon with the tip of said member protruding from the yarn, said member being colored.
JACOB GOTTLIEB.
