Description
W. C. & G. L. BANKS. Calf-Weaner.
No. 202,399. Patented April 16, 1878 W -1- NEE E E5: jirvwjzj UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. BANKS AND GEORGE L. BANKS, OF GOMERS MILLS, COLORADO.
IM PROVEMENT IN CALF-WEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,399, dated April 16, 1878; application filed March 2, 187B.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM G. BANKS and GEORGE L. BANKS, of Gomers Mills, in
the county of Elbert and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oalf-Weaners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in devices for weaning calves and other sucking animals; and it consists in making the weaner from two pieces of board or other suitable material, which are hinged together so as to allow it to be opened for the purpose of being fastened in the nose, and which, when closed, is locked in position by means of a pin or other suitable fastening device, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings represent our invention.
a b represent two strips of board or other suitable material, which are connected together along the diagonal line 0 by means of the hinge (Z. Each one of these pieces has a recess cut in its upper edge, of the shape shown, and is provided with a projection, e, the ends of which do not quite meet, but are just sufficiently far apart to allow it to be fastened in the nose of a calf without hurting it. These two pieces of board or other suitable material are joined together along the line ch. When either one or both are folded backward upon the hinge toward each other the points When the two boards are in a line with each other, and are locked in position by means of the pin 1', which passes through the staples 0, or by any other suitable fastening device, the two points catch so firmly in the nose that the calf cannot possibly free itself from it.
This weaner allows the calf to freely eat and drink, but will not allow it to suck, owing to the fact that it drops down over the mouth, when the head is raised upward, to suchadegree that it cannot take hold of its mothers teats.
A device constructed like the one above described is very cheap and simple, will not hurt the calfs nose, and will prevent it from sucking under any and all circumstances.
We are aware that various devices have been applied to calves for the purpose of weaning them, and which are intended to drop down over the mouth, but none of them will answer the purpose so fully, so far as we are aware, without in some manner hurting or injuring the cows bag.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- A calf-weaner formed of the two pieces of board or other material a b, united together by the hinge d, and locked in position by means of the pin 6, or other suitable fastening device, each of the pieces a 12 having a projection, e, for catching in the nose of the calf, substantially as shown and described.
I11 testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands.
WM. O. BANKS. GEORGE L. BANKS.
