Patented Dec. 3, 1935 UNITED STATE ATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in pumps, especially of the reciprocating plunger or piston type, and the same is designed and specially equipped to be mounted on the forepart of an automobile or power driven conveyance and to be placed in gear with and operated by the motor or engine of the vehicle.
The object of the invention is to construct a pump of the double action type to throw a steady and continuous stream when placed in operation, it is serviceable for any purpose where pumps are required, but by my construction when placed on the forepart of a motor driven vehicle the pump is especially valuable in the rural districts where Water is required to be pumped from streams, wells or cisterns or the like.
The pump is very serviceable for filling tanks, tank cars, water troughs, or any source where water is required, it is also serviceable for spraying trees, shrubs and plants for the destruction of insects, when used in this manner the fluid is supplied from a tank containing the mixture to be dispensed.
The essential feature of the invention is to operate a reciprocating piston type construction by a rotary operated connection, and to dispense with the use of steam or similar power for reciprocating one of the pistons.
Another feature is to provide a gear mechanism arranged to be .driven by the motor shaft of a motor vehicle, this gear mechanism is connected to a piston mechanism whereby the pistons are given reciprocatory motion.
A further object is the general arrangement, construction and combination of parts as will be fully hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

Figure 2 is a central horizontal sectional view of the same,
Figure 3 is a vertical central sectional View.
Figure 4 is an end view with the upper end of the air dome broken ofi.
Figure 5 is a front view of the rotating mechanism made use of for placing the reciprocating pistons in operation, the cover of the housing being removed.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view of the mechanism with the gear pinion centralized.
Figure 7 is a detail View of a portion of one of the end sections of the pump casing showing the position of the valve.
Figure 8 is a cross sectional view of the piston chamber taken on the line 88 of Figure 3, showing its connection with the driving mechanism.
Figure 9 is a side view of the pump shown in position on the front end of an automobile.
Figure 10 is a detail view of. the pump showing how the same may be driven or operated by a hand lever. 5
In the general arrangement and construction of my invention, I provide a pump casing comprising two end members H and i2 each provided with a suitable base l3 and suction pipe inlets M, to these inlets are connected suction pipes l5 con- 10 necting approximately at the center to a coupling it to which is connected the suction lead H which is placed in the stream or water supply through which the fluid is sucked into the pump.
The end members are also provided with sockets i8 into which is inserted the ends of the piston cylinder is, and approximately midway of the sockets is formed a horizontal partition 25 which forms inlets ii to the cylinder. In the sockets and against the partitions are placed valve supports 22 preferably in the form of rings, and against the same are hingedly suspended valves 23, these valves controlling the inflow of the liquid into the cylinder.
In the end sections, and above the partitions 29 25 are outlets Z i through which the liquid under pressure is driven or forced upwardly through valve seats 25 into pipes 26 and emptying into an air chamber or dome 27 from which the liquid is delivered by way of the discharge pipe 28. 30
In the valve seats 25 are poppet valves 29 which rise under pressure when the liquid is forced through the passage, and drop in closed position when the liquid is being sucked into the piston chamber passing through the flap valves located at the inlets.
In the piston chamber or cylinder l9 are positioned pistons 36 each connected to piston rods 3| and their ends in turn connected to a yoke 32 having a central opening or bore 33 for the reception of a trunnion 34 which forms a part ofv the rotary operating mechanism which I will now describe, and which forms the vital part of my invention.
The rotary operating mechanism consists of a suitable housing 35 mounted and firmly held against the piston chamber by a clamping means 36. In the housing is mounted a gear wheel 31 supported on a short shaft 38 which has bearing in the housing wall 39 and in the cover plate 40, and on the inner end of the shaft 38 is fixed a disc 4|.
In the. lower end of the housing is supported a drive shaft 42 on which is a pinion 43 which is in mesh with the gear wheel 31 and by which the gear is placed in rotation. This shaft 42 may be provided with a clutch mechanism 44 for placing the shaft in and out of operation with a shaft 45 which is designed to be attached to or otherwise connected to the crank or drive shaft of the motor of the vehicle, and by which the pump is placed in motion.
On the disc M is eccentrically mounted a gear pinion 46 held on said disc by the connection 41,
and on this pinion is a plate 48 provided with a trunnion 34 which is arranged to extend into the piston cylinder and operate in the elongated slot 49, see Figure 2, and connected to the yoke 32 which controls the pistons.
The plate 48, in addition to being held to the pinion 46 by the means 41, it is additionally held secure by the pins 50. The pinion carrying the plate is in mesh with an internally toothed :gear rim which is held firm in the housing by the screws 52, and while the mechanism is turning the trunnion will move evenly across the housing, or in other words the trunnion will move horizontally and even with the slot 49 placing the pistons in reciprocatory motion in the cylinder.
The toothed gear rim 5! is provided with twice the number of teeth of that of the pinion 46 and the distance between connection 4! and trunnion 34 equals the radius of the pitch circle of pinion 46 in order that the motion of trunnion 34 shall be along a straight line.
In Figure 5, I show by dotted lines the movement of the trunnion across the housing, as the disc 4| rotates in the direction as shown by the arrow, it causes the pinion 46 which is in mesh with the stationary gear rim to rotate in the direction shown by the arrow thereon, during this movement the trunnion 34 will travel horizontally from one side of the housing to the other in a straight path, its position during its travel being shown by dotted lines.
All of the mechanism is placed in operation by the drive shaft 42, and by the rotary motion of the gear mechanism the pistons are placed in reciprocatory motion causing a double action to the pump.
Should it become necessary to operate the pump by hand, I place on the squared end 53 of the short shaft 38, a hand operated handle 54, see Figure 10, and operate it in a forward and back motion as shown by dotted lines in Figure 10. This is used when an emergency arises, and Where the pump is installed other than in connection with a motor or other power driven means.
A pump of this type is adaptable for use on trucks used in street and highway construction. It is useful for draining excavations, flooded cellars, and for any use that pumps may be put to, the same when properly positioned, being always ready for immediate use.
The pump when properly installed on the front end of a motor vehicle, has its drive shaft 45 placed in communication with the crank shaft of the motor, and by the means of an intermediate clutch or other connection mechanism the pump can be placed in and out of operation.
By the movement of the gear mechanism located in the housing, the trunnion 34 which operates the pistons, is moved straight across the center line of the housing on a horizontal line, which movement is continuous back and forward during the movement of the gears, thus by this action the pistons are reeiprocated, functioning properly in the piston cylinder.
I do not desire to limit myself to this precise arrangement, as some and other changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the invention above set forth without departing from the real spirit and purpose thereof; and it is my intention to cover by the following claims any modification or modified form of structure or use of equivalents which may be reasonably included Within their scope.
Having fully described my invention what I claim is:
A pump of the character described comprising a pump casing in which is mounted a double acting piston mechanism, in combination with a rotating gear mechanism by which the pistons are reciprocated, said gear mechanism comprising a gear housing fixed to the pump casing, said gear housing comprising a casting having a circular depression on its one end, a cover plate attached to its opposite end, an intermediate wall formed in the casting, a stub shaft having bearings in the cover plate and intermediate wall, a large gear wheel fixed to said stub shaft, a disc fixed to the one end of said stub shaft, a gear pinion positioned between the intermediate wall and the cover and meshing with the large gear, a drive shaft on which the pinion is mounted, and by which the gear mechanism is driven, an internally toothed gear rim fixed in the circular depression of the gear housing, a gear pinion excentrically mounted on the disc and meshing with the gear rim, a plate fixed to the gear pinion, and a trunnion projecting from the fixed plate, said trunnion extending into the pump casing and connected with the piston mechanism for reciprocating the same during the rotary motion of the gear mechanism, and a square end formed on the stub shaft on which may be attached a hand operating handle when desiring to operate the pump by hand.
