UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. OHINNOOK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO LEONARD RICHARDSON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LAMP SHADE AND BASE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,233, dated April 9, 1878; application filed January 2, 1878.
'Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. OHINNOOK, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in the combination, with a lamp-burner and a shade for diffusing light therefrom, of a translucent or transparent holder or base, supported upon said lampburner, extending upward and outward, and provided with an offset shoulder or flange, on which the shade may rest, and with a portion extending upwardly within the shade, whereby the said holder or base has the additional function of a chimney, and precludes the entrance of air between it and said shade in such manner as to unfavorably affect the flame issuing from the lamp-burner.
The accompanying drawing represents a side view of a lamp-burner, and a central vertical section of a shade and holder or base embodying my invention.
A designates a lamp-burner, which may be of any suitable form. B designates a holder or base, which may be made of glass or other suitable material, preferably transparent, so as to admit of the free diffusion of the light down through it. Its lower end is adapted to fit upon a gallery, a, 011 the burner A, and is preferably provided with an outwardly-extending lip, b, to enable it to be fastened to said burner securely by means of claws cand an adjustable catch, consisting of a spring, d, or other suitable device, overlapping said lip. This holder or base extends upwardly and outwardly, and at a suitable distance above the burner A is provided with an offset, shoulder, or flange, 6, adapted to receive upon it and support the downwardly-extending rim f of the shade 0. Above said offset, shoulder, or flange e the holder or base is provided with a portion, g, which extends upwardly, and is contracted inwardly to a point near the upper portion of the shade. I have shown this holder or base as made in the form of a sphere; but its general shape is immaterial, so long as it comprises a portion extending upwardly and outwardly from'a burner, an offset, shoulder, or flange for supporting a shade, and a portion extending upwardly and inwardly above said offset, shoulder, or flange within the shade, so that the said holder or base is adapted of itself to induce the requisite draft of air to the burner, and to possess the additional function of a support for a shade employed in conjunction with said burner.
Of course, I am aware that there are devices which constitute chimneys or means for inducing draft and globes; hence I do not intend here to cover such an invention.
My invention consists in such a device which, besides serving as a chimney or device to induce a draft of air to the burner, serves also .to support a shade, and thereby obviates the necessity for any metallic or other opaque holder for a shade.
An important advantage of extending this holder or base up into the shade is that currents of air entering between said base and shade will be deflected upward far above the flame, and hence will, instead of causing the flame to flicker, ascend upward, and stimulate the upward draft of air, improving combustion and increasing the light.
Ihave said that the upper portion of the said holder or base extends upward nearly to the top of the shade. It may, however, extend up to the level of the top of the shade, or even above the same, if desired.
This invention is distinguished from the other invention in combined shade-holder or base and chimney, for which I simultaneously apply for Letters Patent, by having a contracted portion both above and below the offset, shoulder, or flange for supporting the shade.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a lamp-burner and a shade for diffusing the light therefrom, of a translucent or transparent holder or base fitting upon said lamp burner, extending therefrom upwardly and outwardly, provided with an offset, shoulder, or flange for supporting the said shade, and with an upwardly and inwardly extending portion fitting within said shade, and terminating near the top thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
GEO. H. OHINNOOK.
