Abstract

A double locking safety pin which has two different locking pin portions.

Description

    BACKGROUND
  • Safety pins can be used to pin one item to another item. For example, safety pins are routinely used to pin items to hold to clothing or other items of fabric. The point of a safety pin is that the pointed part of its pin portion is maintained underneath a protector surface when the device is pinned, so that the pointed portion of the safety pin cannot stick or otherwise harm the user.
  • SUMMARY
  • Embodiments disclosed herein describe a double pinning safety pin which has two different portions that can pin, and both of the pin portions are held underneath a safety cover when in the pinned position.
  • A first embodiment which has double pins coming from a first pivot point.
  • Another embodiment describes 2 different pins, each on its own pivot point.
  • A special double catching pin receiving head is also defined, with dual surfaces for holding the safety pin.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • In the Drawings:
  • FIG. 1 shows a first embodiment with 2 pins on a common axis pivot in the open position;
  • FIG. 2 shows the FIG. 1 safety pin in the closed position;
  • FIG. 3 shows a second embodiment of the safety pin where the two different pins are on individual pivot axes;
  • FIG. 4 shows the second embodiment safety pin with both sides closed and secured.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION
  • Embodiments describe a double clipping safety pin, which has two different pins, both of which are spring-loaded, and both of which attach into a surface held within a safety cover. This allows double pinning so that one of the pins can be pinned to a first item and the other pin can be pinned to a second item.
  • A first embodiment shows a first double pinning safety pin which includes a single safety cover 100 which is a double surfaced safety cover having a first pin receiving surface 102 on one side of the cover, and a second pin receiving surface 104 on the other side of the cover. In one embodiment, the cover 100 is attached to a rigid structural member 110 which extends from a first end 116 near the spring bias portion formed of a coil spring 115, to a second end 117 that adjoins the safety cover 100. A portion of the structural member 110 is covered with a rigid cover that protects and strengthens the connection. In another embodiment, the pin structure extends from the first end to the second end with no cover.
  • The safety cover 100 includes safety pin receiving surfaces 130, 131 on opposite sides. Each of the safety pin receiving surfaces includes a rounded surface that is shaped to receive and hold the end of the pin therein.
  • The spring biased portion 120 is a common axis coil spring, forming two spring points, respectively formed to spring bias the respective pins into the open positions as shown in FIG. 1. The first end of the spring bias portion 120 ends in a first pin member 150 which has a first pointed end 151. The second end of the spring bias portion 120 forms a second pin 140 which has a second pointed end 141.
  • In operation, first pin end such as 151 can be pinned into an item such as an item of cloth or paper or other thin material. Then, the pin end 151 is pressed towards the safety cover 100, and the pin and is hooked under the open portion 135, and tucked into the surface 130. When tucked into the surface 130, the pointed portion 151 of the pin is held under the safety surface 130, so that it cannot harm or poke an individual, however it is pinned in place. In a similar way, the second pin end 141 is tucked into the corresponding surface 131 at the second end of the pinhead.
  • In this embodiment, both pins hinge on a common hinge axis at 120, and hook in to a single safety member 100.
  • FIG. 2 illustrates the double-headed pin with both of its sections tucked into place. In this embodiment, when tucked into place in this way, this can pin together two different items each on a separate pin shaft.
  • A second embodiment is shown in FIG. 3, where there are two separate pin pivots, one located at each of two different safety covers. This embodiment has the same style safety cover, with dual surface safety covers, for symmetry, Each of the pins tucks in to the safety cover opposite that pin. A first pivot 300 is at the location of a first safety cover 301. The pin member 310 pivots on the pivot 300 at one end and has a point at its other end. The pointed end of the pin 310 tucks into the surface 332 on the safety member 331 at the end opposite the pin's pivot 300. The safety member 331 is also associated with a pivot 330 on which the pin 340 is pivoted, and which tucks in to the surface 311 on the cover 301. Thus both of the safety covers 301, 331 include a pin receiving surface, with the first safety cover 331 having a pin receiving safety surface 332 which receives the and of the pin 310. In a similar way, the cover 301 includes a safety surface 311 which receives the second end of the pin 340. In this way, both of the pins 310 and 340 can be pinned into items, but each can pin into items from opposite directions. The pin heads are then tucked into place where they are safe.
  • FIG. 3 shows the structural cover member 320, however, that structural cover may be optional.
  • In one embodiment, the safety covers 301 331 are double ended, bilaterally symmetrical, safety covers of the same type as in FIG. 1.
  • FIG. 4 shows an illustration of the second embodiment of the safety pin with both of the pins tucked into place.
  • The previous description of the disclosed exemplary embodiments is provided to enable any person skilled in the art to make or use the present invention. Various modifications to these exemplary embodiments will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and the generic principles defined herein may be applied to other embodiments without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Thus, the present invention is not intended to be limited to the embodiments shown herein but is to be accorded the widest scope consistent with the principles and novel features disclosed herein.
