UNITED. STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
FREDERICK S. DAWES, OF HUDSON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENTIN COUNTER-STIFFENERS FOR B OOTSAND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,796, dated March 26, 1878; application filed January 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. DAWES, of Hudson, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and Improved Counter-Stiffener for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which the figures are perspective views of my improved counter-stiffener, showing various forms thereof.
My invention consists in providing a boot or shoe coimter-stiffener with a tongue or projection to extend upward along the back seam, for the purpose of protecting the same and preventing the boot or shoe from breaking or cracking at that point.
In carrying out my invention, I take a counter-stifiener, A, of green or raw hide, leather, steel, fiber, or other proper material for such purpose, and either form or provide it at the back edge with a vertical tongue or extension, B, which shall fit again st and extend up along the back seam of the shoe. This tongue constitutes a stiffener and protector, first, to brace and hold up the counter-stiffener; secondly, to hold the seam to its place, and prevent the stitches from breaking by wear 5 and, thirdly, to prevent the shoe from breaking or cracking off above the counter-stifiener.
In Figure 1 the counter-stiffener and tongue are made in one piece, from rawhide. In Fig. 2 the counter-stiffener is composed of leather, having a rawhide tongue riveted or otherwise secured to it on the inside. In Fig. 3 a like construction is shown with the tongue fastened to the outside of the counter-stiffener. 4 the counter-stiffener is shown composed of leather, with a steel tongue.
The construction may, of course, be varied indefinitely, the essential object being that the counter-stilfener shall be provided with a tongue to cover the back seam of a boot or shoe.
Having thus described I claim as new is 1. The counter-stiffener of a boot or shoe, constructed with a tongue to cover or lie my invention, what against the back sean1,substantially as scribed, for the purpose specified.
2. A counter-stiil'ener of leather, leatherboard, or other analogous material, and provided with a metallic or rawhide tongue, all substantially as described.
