UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN T. FLYNN, OF NAUGATUCK, CONNECTICUT.
`IMPROVHEMENII IN RUBBER BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 201,766, dated March 26, 1878 application tiled June 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. FLYNN, of Naugatuck, in the county of ,New Haven and State 0f Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Rubber Boots, of which the following is a specification:
' The object of my invention is a vulcanizedrubber boot, constructed, as fully described hereinafter, to insure greater durability and the requisite stiffness along the center of the upper and at the sides. In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the boot; Fig. 2, a vertical section; Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6, detached views; Fig. 7, a plan of the tap-sole.
vulcanized-rubber boots of the usual construction are weak at the uppers,- and almost invariably break across the instep, owing to the want of support, and to the fact that the movement of the leg causes abend at this point in the act of walking.
To remedy this defect, and otherwise improve the boot, I apply, in the usual course of manufacture, a re-enforce, E, Figs. 2 and 5, of the same material as the body of the boot, and vulcanized thereto, so as to form a homogeneous part thereof, the upper edge of the re-enforce being embedded between the edge of the leg A and that of the upper B, so as to form a treble thickness over the instep.
The re enforce is constructed with two tongues, s s, which extend down both sides in front of the heel, and with a central tongue,
o, projecting downward toward the tongue of an inner toe-piece, G.
Freedom from inside projections is secured at the sole by recessing the sole at and bending both toe-piece and upper into said recess, so that the inside of the toe--piece is flush with the inside of the sole.
The re-enforce E, its tongue c, and the toepiece G, and its tongue, stiften the boot along the center of the upper, where it is most apt to yield, while the tongues s s stiften the sides and prevent any sinking, thus insuring the retention of the form of the boot, while the treble thickness over the instep and at the junction of the leg and upper prevents the bending and gradual cracking of the boot, invariably resulting when the instep can bend and sink.
A. vulcanized-rubber boot provided at the junction of the leg and upper with :a re-enforce, E, embedded between the two, and eX- tending to .the sole at the sides, and with an inner toe-piece, G, whereby the upper is stiff'- ened and its form preserved, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses JOHN T. FLYNN.`
