Description

H.. A. WALKER. Saw Cleaner for Cotton Gins.
N0 201,724. Patented March 26,1878
WITNESSES INVENTOR:
ATTORNEYS.
N-PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAFHEH. WASHINGTON E1v C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. WALKER, RANALEBURG, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-CLEANERS FOR COTTON-GINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,724, dated March 26, 1878; application filed December 4, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. WALKER, of Ranaleburg, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Saw-Gleaner for Cotton- Gins, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a cotton gin containing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the bars or wipers.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and effective device for cleaning the saws of a cotton-gin.
V The invention consists in a series of notched wipers composed of flexible material, and attached to the periphery of a drum or wheel, which is rotated at the back of the gin-saws.
Referring to the drawing, A represents one of a series of gin-saws, and B a wheel or drum placed at the back of the saws upon the shaft G, which is journaled in the main frame of the machine.
A number of bars or wipers, D, are secured to the periphery of the drum or wheel B, to each of which a strip, E, of leather or other flexible material, is secured. This strip projects beyond the bar D a short distance, and is notched at short intervals, to receive the periphery of the saws. The'wheel B is rotated toward the saws by connection with one of the shafts of the gin.
The flexible wipers are employed in place of the more expensive brushes.
The cleaner thus described removes the cotton and the gum from the saws, so that the process of ginning may be carried on continuously.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the rotary saws in a cotton-gin, of a drum, B, placed in the immediate rear thereof, and having longitudinal edge-slitted strips of leather to form Wipers, as shown and described.
2. The combination of drum D, strips E, and wipers D, constructed, arranged, and adapted to operate in connection with the rotary saws of a cotton-gin, as and for the purpose specifled.
