Description
M. FLINN Sept. 10, 1935.
WRENCH Filed May 17, 1934 fil grow Flinn INVENTOR BY I ATTORNEY,
Patented Sept. 10, 1935 UNITED STATES ATENT GFME 1 Claim.
This invention relates to wrenches and its general object is to provide a wrench that is primarily designed for use with stud bolts, rods, pipes and the like, that can be easily and expeditiously associated therewith for applying and removing the same in close quarters with very little effort on the part of the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a stud wrench that is extremely useful about motor vehicle engines, in that it fits all sizes of stud bolts commonly employed thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stud wrench that is capable of direct rotation, or as a ratchet, is inexpensive to manufacture, simple in construction, strong and compact and efficient in use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denotelike or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating my wrench in use on a stud bolt.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 33 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 44 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing the application of my wrench to a relatively large stud bolt.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that I have illustrated my wrench in use with stud bolts, but of course it can be used with rods, pipes and the like of various diameters.
My wrench includes a body I which is provided with fiat upper and lower surfaces as shown, with square cornered heads 2 formed on said surfaces, and the heads as well as the body has extending therethrough a longitudinally disposed bore 3 which is for the purpose of receiving the work, such as a stud bolt as shown.
The body is substantially rectangular in formation and has arranged therein a transversely disposed bore 4 that intersects the bore 3 and mounted for slidable movement in the bore 4 is a ratchet block 5, the latter being provided with an inclined surface having formed thereon teeth 6 disposed for biting engagement with the work as best shown in Figures 3 and 5. The ratchet block is spring pressed, and for that purpose I provide a recess arranged in the large or inner side there- 5 of to receive one end convolution of a coil spring i, while the opposite end convolution of the spring is received in a recess disposed in the inner end of the bore 4 which acts in the capacity as a chamber for the block and spring as will be ap- 10 parent.
In order that the ratchet block or dog may be retracted or moved to an inactive position, I provide a finger member 8 which in the form as shown is a headed screw bolt which extends through a 15 slot 9 arranged in the body for communication with the bore or chamber 4.
The body may be of any desired shape, but it is preferably elongated, and provided with a laterally arranged thickened portion it, so that a 20 tool such as a hammer can be used thereon for loosening or tightening stud bolts and the like, and of course the heads 2 are designed to receive a tool for actuating my wrench in applying and removing the bolts and the like.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my in- Vention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combina- 30 tion and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A wrench comprising an elongated body, square 35 cornered tool receiving heads formed on the upper and lower surfaces of said body adjacent one end and together with said body being provided with a bore extending therethrough, said body having a chamber therein intersecting the bore 40 and extending through one end of the body, a block having an inclined toothed surface and mounted for slidable movement in said chamber with its toothed surface disposed to extend within the bore, said body and block having aligned recesses, 45 a coil spring arranged in the chamber and having its end convolutions mounted in the recesses to urge said block in operative position, headed releasing means for said block and threaded therein, and the opposite end of said body including a 50 tool receiving thickened portion laterally formed thereon.
