For many years bottles have been formed with a neck having a continuous pouring lip and have been closed by the use of a cork. The under portion of the lips of bottles of the foregoing character sloped upwardly towards the neck when the bottle was tilted to pouring position whereby dripping of the liquid was prevented. Corks, however, in addition to being unsightly, are liable to be dislodged from their position in the neck of the bottle by a blow or otherwise with loss of the contents of the bottle. Moreover corks deteriorate in use and the top thereof is liable to be broken off with the disadvantage that the portion remaining in the bottle causes annoyance and must be removed by a cork screw or otherwise with danger of contamination of the contents of the bottle.
More recently bottles have been commonly closed by means of a screw cap having a thread on the interior thereof which engage corresponding threads on the neck of the bottle. While the bottle having a cap eliminates some of the difficulties above referred to, the bottle is usually formed without a pouring lip with the result that when liquid is poured from the bottle it drips down over the sides thereof resulting not only in loss of liquid but presenting an unsightly appearance on the outer surface of the bottle, particularly when it runs down over the label thereof. In the latter case the reading on the label is likely to be obliterated, a result which is particularly objectionable in the case of prescription labels.
My invention provides a bottle and seal therefor which possesses the advantages of both types of seal above referred to and which eliminates the disadvantages usually incident to both. The bottle embodying my invention is provided with a pouring lip. At the same time a special cap is readily secured to the neck and effectually seals the bottle.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which I illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof and in which Fig. 1 is a front view of the bottle made in accordance with my invention, a cap therefor being illustrated in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional inverted plan view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of the cap; Fig. 5 is a sectional view through Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the neck of the bottle embodying my invention with the cap therefor in the position which it initially occupies preliminary to being placed in sealing position on the bottle; Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 illustrating the cap for the bottle further adjusted towards the sealing position; and Fig. 8 is a fragmentary plan view, similar to Fig. 2 of a modifled type of bottle. 5

Referring to the drawing II] is a bottle which, in the embodiment illustrated, is provided with a rounded face II, to which may be secured a 10 label I2. The bottle is provided with the usual neck I3, surmounted by an outwardly projecting pouring lip I4 preferably having a relatively thin peripheral edge I5, extending substantially around the neck and of uniform continuity 15 throughout the major portion thereof but having a notch I6, extending vertically therethrough. The notch is located outside the sealing line which the lip forms with the cap and is preferably located on the same side of the bottle as 20 that to which the label is to be attached. The under portion of the lip slopes upwardly towards the neck of the bottle when the latter is tilted to the pouring position thereby preventing dripping of liquid when poured from the bottle. The 25 bottle thus preserves the advantages of old lipped bottles without the disadvantages that were incident thereto.
The neck of the bottle is also provided with inclined lugs or cams I'I, preferably formed in- 30 tegral with the bottle. The lugs are circumferentially spaced about the neck of the bottle and also spaced from the edge of the lip as illustrated in Fig. 1 and also equi-distant from the upper sealing edge of the neck of the bottle. The 35 upper end of the inclined portion of one of the lugs Ila is preferably but not necessarily located adjacent the notch I6 indicated in Fig. 1. The lugs are preferably spaced symmetrically around the neck and when three such lugs are used, as 40 in the embodiment illustrated, they are apart.
The neck of the bottle is sealed by the dished cap I8 comprising a top cover and sealing portion I8I which may be slightly rounded if desired and 45 an annular flange or rim I82. The rim I82 is provided with inwardly extending lugs I9I, I92 and I93 as best shown in Fig. 4 corresponding in number and spacing to the lugs ll of the neck of the bottle. Two of the lugs I92 and I93 are intended 50 to engage beneath the lip I4 while the third lug I9I is adapted to pass through the notch I6.
In order to seal the bottle, the cap I8 is first inclined in the position indicated in Fig. 6 to bring two lugs illustrated as I92 and I93 beneath 55 the lip l4 and adjacent the corresponding lugs on the neck of the bottle with the one side of the cap including the lug l9l located above the neck of the bottle as indicated in Fig. 6. The lug i9! is then passed through the notch 16 and all three of the lugs occupy positions adjacent the lugs or cams I! of the neck of the bottle. Then by turning the cap clockwise as viewed in Figs. 6 and '7, the lugs Hi, #92 and H33 engage and ride along the inclined surfaces on the lugs I? of the neck of the bottle, and force the top of the cap I8 into sealing engagement with the lip of the bottle. The cap is of course removed by moving the cap in the reverse direction.
By forming the notch 66 on the same side of the bottle as the label and by pouring the contents of the bottle from the continuous portion of the lip which is opposite the notch I 5, the contents of the bottle are precluded from dripping downwardly and soiling the label.
My invention provides an extended pouring lip around the major portion of the neck of the bottle which not only adds to the ease of pouring but minimizes the drip along the sides of the bottle. Furthermore, by forming the notch on the same ide of the bottle as that on which the label is placed the user is practically compelled to pour from the side of the bottle opposite to that bearing the label, thereby, precluding the possibility of soiling the label. At the same time a cap seal is provided having all the advantages of the usual cap seal.
While I prefer to use but a single notch in the lip of the bottle, it is evident that a pouring lip having a continuous unbroken peripheral edge throughout the major portion thereof and practically 270 in extent, can be attained by employing two notches 2G and 2!, as shown in Fig. 8, which may be 90 part. In this case four lugs 22 shown in dotted outline are spaced about the neck of the bottle and the cap is likewise provided with four lugs cooperating therewith. Where four lugs and two notches are used, the cap is placed over the lip of the bottle in tilted position with two lugs below the lip, and the other two lugs on the cap are aligned with and dropped through the notches, as shown and described in connection with the single notch bottle.
While I have described my invention in its preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the words which I have used are words of description rather than of limitation and that the drawing is merely illustrative. Hence, changes within the purview of the appended claims may be made without departing from the true scope and spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. As an article or" manufacture, a bottle having a neck surmounted by an outwardly projecting lip the under portion of which is upwardly inclined towards the neck when the bottle is tilted to pouring position whereby drip of the liquid when poured from the bottle is prevented, said lip being provided with a re-entrant notch at one point through which a lug on a bottle cap may pass, and said neck being provided with cam lugs located beneath said lip and beneath which lugs on said cap may engage.
2. As an article of manufacture, a bottle having a neck surmounted by an outwardly projecting lip the under portion of which is upwardly inclined towards the neck when the bottle is tilted to pouring position whereby drip of the liquid when poured from the bottle is prevented, a closure element for sealing said bottle provided with a plurality of inwardly extending lugs and said lip being provided with a re-entrant notch at one point outside the sealing line which the lip forms with the cap and through which a lug on said bottle cap may pass, and said neck being provided with cam lugs located beneath said lip and beneath which lugs on said cap may engage.
3. A bottle having a neck surmounted by an outwardly projecting lip the under portion of which is inclined upwardly towards the neck when the bottle is tilted to pouring position whereby drip of the liquid, when liquid is poured from the bottle, is prevented, a closure element for sealing said bottle provided with a plurality of inwardly extending lugs and the edge of said lip being interrupted in one zone only to permit the passage of a lug on the interior of a closing cap for said bottle and cam lugs circumferentially disposed about the neck of said bottle below said lip and adapted to cooperate with lugs on a closure element.
l. In combination, a bottle provided with a neck having an outwardly projecting lip the under portion of which is inclined upwardly towards said neck when the bottle is tilted to pouring position, said lip being provided with a smooth edge except for a re-entrant notch extending therethrough, said neck being provided with inclined lugs located beneath said lip, and a cap for sealing the bottle provided with inwardly extending protuberances adapted to engage the respective lugs of the neck and one of which is adapted to pass through said notch.
5. In combination, a bottle provided with a neck having a lip projecting outwardly therefrom the under portion of which is inclined upwardly towards the neck when the bottle is tilted to pouring position, said lip being provided with a notch extending downwardly therethrough and inclined lugs secured to said neck beneath said lip, and a dished cap for sealing the bottle and provided with protuberances adapted to engage the respective lugs and one of which is adapted to pass through one of said notches.
6. In combination, a bottle provided with a neck surmounted by an outwardly projecting lip the under portion of which is inclined upwardly towards said neck, said lip being provided with a notch extending downwardly therethrough and three inclined lugs secured to said neck beneath said lip, one of said lugs being located adjacent said notch and the other two being located on opposite sides of the center line through the first, and a dished cap for sealing the bottle and provided with protuberances adapted to engage the respective lugs of the neck and one of which is adapted to pass through said notch.
