This invention relates to screw drivers and more particularly to a screw driver adapted to detachably hold a screw on the blade thereof.
An object of this invention is to provide a screw driver with means at the blade end thereof to detachably hold a screw on the end of the blade, the screw holding means engaging within the kerf of the screw.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a screw driver means for holding a screw on the end of the blade, the screw holding means being so constructed as not to prevent complete tightening of the screw as is the case where clamping means engage below the head of the screw.
A further object of vide a yieldable screw this invention is to proclamping means on the blade of a screw driver which will firmly hold the screw on the blade of the screw driver while at the same time permitting release of the screw from the blade after the screw has been threaded into the desired material.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure l is a detail side elevation of a screw holding member mounted on a screw driver shown partly broken away.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation partly in section showing the improved screw driver mounted on the head of a screw.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the screw driver.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral designates generally the shank of a screw driver having a flat blade at the forward end thereof. This blade H is adapted to have the forward end thereof engaged within the kerf |3 of the head |2 of a screw M. Where screws are so mounted as to make it desirable to provide some means for detachably holding the screw on the end of the screw driver blade and in order to provide a means of this kind which will not only hold the screw on the blade of the screw driver but also permit the complete mounting or threading of the screw in the material, I have provided a clamping or screw holding means generally designated as 5, which is mounted on the forward end of the screw driver.
This screw holding means comprises an elongated spring or yieldable bar l6 which in the present instance is preferably constructed round in transverse section and is provided with a curved upper end portion ll engaging in a recess l8 provided in the forward end of the shank In of the screw driver. A transversely extending pin I9 is mounted in the shank ID of the screw driver and engages across the recess 8 and holds the curved end portion 1 of the spring IS in the recess 8.
The blade H of the screw driver on one side thereof is provided with a longitudinally extcnding recess 20 within which the forward offset end portion 2| of the screw holding member engages. Preferably the outer side of the screw holding portion 2| is flattened, as .at 22, so that when the oifset portion 2| is mounted in the recess 20, the flat face 22 will be substantially flush with the adjacent face of the blade The upper end of the offset portion 2| contacts with the bottom of the recess adjacent the upper end thereof and the lower end of the screw holding member 2| projects at the lower end thereof outwardly of the groove or recess 20.
In the use of the screw driver hereinbefore described, when it is desired to attach a screw on the blade I for inserting the screw in a piece of material, the kerf l3 of the screw is engaged with the blade II with the blade tilted at an angle sufficient to permit placing the blade II in the kerf and pressing the member 2| into the groove 20 by engagement with a wall of the kerf. After the screw has been threaded completely or as far as may be desired into the material, it is only necessary to pull the screw driver outwardly or away from the be accomplished without touching the screw holding means hereinbefore described.
It will be apparent, therefore, that an exceedingly simple screw holding means has been disclosed which can be readily mounted on the present construction of screw drivers without materially weakening the structure of the screw driver and without adding unduly to the manufacturing cost of the screw driver.
What is claimed is:-
1. A screw driver, comprising a shank and a blade, said blade having a longitudinally extending recess in one side thereof and in substantially the transverse center, a yieldable screw holding member extending longitudinally of the shank and the blade, said shank having a recess spaced upwardly from the recess of the blade, said screw holding member having the upper end portion thereof disposed in said recess of the shank, the intermediate portion of said screw holding member being normally disposed in spaced relation to the adjacent side of the blade and the shank, the forward end portion of said screw holding member being offset in the direction of the blade and normally disposed partially in the recess of the blade.
2. A screw driver, comprising a shank and a blade, said blade having a longitudinally extending recess in one side thereof and in substantially the transverse center, said shank having a recess therein spaced from the recess of the blade and on the same side as the recess in the blade, a yieldable screw holding member extending longitudinally of the shank, said screw holding member having a curved upper end portion disposed in the recess of the shank, a pin extending across the recess and disposed in the shank for holding the upper end of the screw holding mentber in the recess of the shank, the intermediate portion of said screw holding member being normally disposed in spaced relation to the adjacent side of the blade and the shank, the forward end portion of said screw holding member being ofiset in the direction of the blade and normally 10 disposed partially in the recess of the blade.
