UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM REKART, OF JENNINGS TOWNSHIP, PUTNAM COUNTY, OHIO.
'- IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,288, dated March 12, 1878 application filed December 14, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM REKART, of Jennings township, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjustable gate, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, A represents the ordinary gate-post, to which the gate is connected. The gate consists of a series of horizontal bars or boards, B, connected at the ends and center by upright cross-bars B. O is a post, turning upon top and bottom pivots in sockethinges attached to the gate-post A, substantially as shown.
In a recess about midway in the front of the post 0 is pivoted an inclined lever, D, having its short arm extending beyond the post A upward, and the long arm extending downward along the gate. Both arms of this lever are held to the swinging post 0 by means of pawls E E, taking into ratchets a a formed on opposite sides of said post. At the lower end of the lever D is mounted a roller, 1), and a button, d, is pivoted on the same stud outside of the roller.
A similar roller, b, and button 01 are pivoted on the front of the post 0, as shown. The gate B B is attached to the triangle formed by the post G and lever D by. being hung on the two rollers b b, and fastened by means of the buttons d d, extending from the bar below to the bar above the rollers.
G is the latch of the gate, extending from the center upright B of the gate to a slothook mortise in the gate-post A, to prevent the gate from rolling open when latched. H is a lever, pivoted to one of the bars B of the gate, and acting on the latch G with eccentric movement by means of a pin, 71-, projecting from it. This lever extends above the gate, so that the latch can easily be opened or operated on horseback, as well as onfoot.
If from any cause the post 0 should sag or spring, the front part of the gate can be raised or lowered by means of the two pawls E E on the gate-supporting lever D, so as to adjust the swinging of the gate, it being understood that when the latch is raised the gate is first pushed back, more or less, on the rollers 11, and then swung open. The gate may also, by these means, be so adjusted as to admit of hogs or other small animals passing and repassing.
By means of the buttons d the gate can be easily raised or lowered, if desired, from one bar of the gate to another to pass snow banks or drifts.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the swinging post 0 with ratchets a, and the pivoted lever D with pawls E, for supporting and adjusting the gate, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of April, 1877.
ADAM REKART.
