Description

0. T. PORTER. I Journal-Box. No. 20I,l97. Patented March 12, 1878.
ATTO NEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CHARLES T. PORTER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY. Y
IMPROVE M ENT l N JOURNAL-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,197, dated March 12, 1878; application filed November 6,1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. PORTER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved J ournal-Box,'of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a plan View of my improved journal-box, having the cover removed. Fig.2 is a sectional elevation taken on line as m in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the gib and Wedge.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A is a pillow-block, of the usual external form, and provided with the cap B, for confining the journal-box O.
The journal-box O, which is cylindrical in form, is composed of an upper piece, a, lower piece I), and adjustable side pieces or checks 0. All of the pieces a b c of the box are provided with a central rib, d, which is fitted to a corresponding groove in the pillow-block, and prevents end motion in the box. The box is prevented from turning by lug-pins d, fitted to holes in the pillow-block.
Recesses e are formed at the ends of the pillow-block for receiving keys or wedges f, by which the side pieces 0 are adjusted. The inclined face of each wedge is placed in contact with an inclined bearing-surface, 9, formed on the outer side on each of the pieces 0 at p their ends. After the wedges are placed the gibs or thickening-pieces h are placed between them and the raised portion 1' of the inner wall of the pillow-block. These gibs are tapered for a short distance at their lower ends, to render them easily inserted; and they are provided with heads at their upper ends, which engage the upper ends of the wedges as they are drawn upward.
Screws 70 pass through the cap B into the ends of the wedges, for moving them, and by this means adjusting the side pieces 0. The screws k are prevented from turning by setscrews It, that are inserted in the bosses on the cap B, through which the screws 70 pass.
By my improved construction I am enabled to place the supporting-wedges as near as possible to the line of thrust of the engine-that is, at the extreme end of the box against which the boss of the crank-disk revolves.
The horizontal engine is, by my improvement, made equal to the vertical engine in supporting the shaft in the direction of the line of centers.
Having thus fully described my improvement, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with pillow-block A and cap B, of the journal-box having externallyinclined checks 0, the wedges f, and the gibs h, arranged as shown and described.
CHARLES T. PORTER.
