This invention relates `to shoe holding devices, being intended to be used in the making or repairing of shoes.

The invention provides an` improved device for embracingly engaging completely around the exterior of and for holdingA a shoe upper in proper relation to a last so as to facilitate the operation of applying theretothe sole or soles and filling.

More specifically the invention resides in a device of the indicated character which embodies a plurality of relatively movable shoe upper engaging and clamping sections and a common means for simultaneously effecting relative movements of the sections towards and away from each other so that the same may be expeditiously engaged with a shoe upper kand held by the device or released therefrom.

The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of the application, with the understanding, however, that the improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modications may be made therein as do not aect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the numerals 'l and 8 indicate blocks which are respectively supported by standards 'la and 8a. Said blocks are movable towards and away from each other by means hereinafter to be described and are recessed to receive the ends and inner sides of shoes placed on lasts lll. The outer sides of the shoes are supported by arms I2 which are in the form of bell crank levers and are movable laterally toward and away from the shoe. The levers I2 are pivoted to the block 1 at I3 and their confronting ends adjacent these pivotal points are arcuate and toothed and, are engaged by'a worm i ii formed on a shaft l 5 which may be turned by a hand wheel I6. It will readily be understood that the turning of the wheel i6 is effective to move the levers or supports l 2 laterally towards or away from the outer sides of the shoes. The shaft l 5 is provided with shoulders Il tting into corresponding `recesses in the block l, the shaft thereby being held from moving lengthwise of itself. An end of the shaft l5 projects into a recess 29 in the block 8 and threadedly engages said block as indicated by the numeral i9 so that the turning of the wheel IG is effective to move the block 3 to and away from the block l, said block being slidably mounted on the support 8a, `having a groove 8b which receives the head 8c of the standard 8a. It will thus be seen that the turning of the hand wheel E6 is effective to 'move the levers i2 towards or away from the shoes and in the same time to move the block 8 towards or away from the block l. Means are thus provided whereby the shoes may be securely held in position while they are beingworked on.

. In Fig.l5 I show ablock 8d corresponding to the `block 8, sho-wn in Figs.` l to 3, inclusive. The

block 8d differs from the block 3 in that it comprises parts 8e having a plurality of apertures 8f, into any of which screws 8g may be secured in order to adjust the member 8e at any desired position relative to the toes of the shoe 2|. It will readily be understood that the block 3d may have adjustable side members corresponding to the members 8e to support the inner sides of the shoes and that block 'l may also have members corresponding to the members 8e adjustable to the heels of the shoes.

What is claimed is:

l. A device of the character described, including a pair of clamping sections mounted for relative movement with respect to each other in the direction of the length of a shoe and adapted to engage around the forepart, the inner side and the heel portion of the shoe, a clamping section adapted for relative movement with reference to the first mentioned sections and to engage the outer side of the shoe, and means for eifecting relative movement of said clamping sections towards and away from each other and to and from clamping engagement with the shoe upper so as to embracingly engage with the lasted shoe upper and to disengage the same.

A device of the character described, including a pair of clamping sections mounted for relative movement with respect to each other in the direction of the length of a shoe and adapted to ing a pair of clamping sections mounted for relative movement with respect to each other in the direction of the length of a shoe and adapted to engage around the forepart, the inner side and the heel portion of the shoe, a fulcrumed clamping section adapted for relative movement with reference to the first mentioned sections and t engage the outer side of the shoe, and means for effecting relative movement of said clamping sections towards and away from each other and to and from clamping engagement with the shoe upper so as to embracingly engage with the lasted shoe upper and to disengage the same.

A device of the character described, including a pair of clamping sections mounted for relative movement with respect to each other in the direction of the length of a shoe and contoured and adapted to engage around theforepart, the inner side and the heel portion of the shoe, a clamping section adapted for relative` movement with reference to the first mentioned sections and to engage the outer side of the shoe, and means for effecting relative movement of said clamping sections towards and away fromjeach other and to and from clamping engagement with the shoe upper so as to embracingly engage with the lasted shoe upper and to disengage the same.

A device of the character described, including a pair of clamping sections mounted for relative movement with respect to each other in the direction of the length of a shoe, elements carried by and contoured so as to adapt the-same for intimate engagement with the forepartf the inner side and heel portion of shoes of various sizes, a clamping section adapted for relative movement with reference to the rst mentioned sections and to engage the outer side of the shoe, and means for effecting relative movement of said clamping sections towards and away from each other and to and from clamping engagement with the shoe upper so as to embracingly engage with the lasted shoe upper and to disengage the same.

6. A device of the character set forth, including a plurality of clamping sections contoured and adapted to cooperatively function to embracingly engage completely around the exterior of a lasted shoe upper in the region of the normal lower edge thereof, one of said sections being relatively movable with respect to another in the direction of the length of the shoe and another of said sections being horizontally swingable with respect to said other sections, and means for simultaneously effecting relative movement of said sections towards and away from each other to engaged and disengaged positions with the shoe upper. 1

In a device of the character set forth, blocks adapted to receive the ends and inner sides of a pair of shoes having lasts therein, a pair of laterally movable supports for the outer sides of the shoes, and means for moving said supports laterally towards or away from the outer sides of the shoes and for simultaneously moving said blocks relatively towards or away `from each other. l

8. In a device of the character set forth, blocks adapted to receive the ends and inner sides of a pair of shoes having lasts therein, a pair of laterally movable supports for the outer sides of the shoes, means for moving said-supports laterally towards or away from the outer lsides of the shoes and for simultaneously moving said `blocks relatively towards or away fromeach other, 'said supports being in the form of bell crank levers having toothed arcuate confronting ends andsaid means including a worm engaged with said teeth of said levers.
