PRINTER S BLANK ET Filed 001;. 24, 1932 Imam/1'- Then 102 6 EKIZOLUZZ'U'IZ' Q9 a ay.
Patented Aug. 13, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- PRINTERS BLANKET Theodore E. Knowlton, Watertown, N. Y. Application October 24, 1932, Serial No. 639,215 '2' Claims. (Ql.154-54.5)
This invention relates to printers blankets and method of manufacture, and particularly pertains to blankets which are simple in structure, economical to manufacture, and efiicient in use.
The invention consists of the novel methods, combinations and arrangements hereinafter described or claimed for carryingout the above stated objects and such other objects as will hereinafter appear.
Impression cylinders of printing presses are constructed of hard materials, such as metal, and are unyielding under pressure to which they are subjected during printing operations. Accordingly, it isthe practice to cover the face of impression cylinders with a printers blanket of yieldable material to compensate for any inaccuracies of the printing elements in order that an even printing impression may be made over the whole surface of the web or sheet to be printed. Heretofore these printers blankets have been made from sheets of special composition or construction, such as cork granules mixed with a 1 suitable binder, a canvas, felt or ordinary sheets of paper coated wtih rubber or the like.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a product which possesses the qualities of resiliency, elasticity and toughness, yet is homogeneous in character, whereby same may be durable for a long period of use without separating apart or breaking down.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference may be made to the single figure of drawing which is a sectional view of a printers blanket embodying the invention.
Numeral l designates a fibrous. sheet, such as paper or felt composed of wood or cotton pulp, or the like, saturated with a solution 2 of rubber *latex which is one "specific example typifying any a suitable rubber solution; solutions of cellulose derivatives, such as nitro-cellulose, cellulose acetate and others; solutions of gum or natural resins; glue and glycerine; or hydrocarbon oils or asphalts or vegetable oils or combinations of same. A sheet saturated with the materials specified is provided to a marked extent with qualities of pliability, resiliency and toughness, thereby making it of a character especially suited for use .as primers-blankets.
A fibrous or fabric sheet, so saturated, is homogeneous in character and structure, having no coating, reenforcement or filling which is separated or apart from any other part of the sheet.- Accordingly, there is no one part of the sheet to separate from another during use, and the homogeneous sheet provides a printers blanket of uniform character over the entire surface of the impression cylinders.
The sheet may be of any desired thickness, and applied in a single layer over the face of the impression roll, or it may be wrapped thereabout in any number of layers to build up the facing to any desired thickness.
Obviously the invention is not restricted to the details of construction herein described and illustrated, and various changes may be made without 10 departing from the spirit thereof.
I claim:
1. A printers blanket comprising a foundation layer of felted fibrous material completely filled with a saturating means of resilient character 15 whereby the saturated fibrous layer is of homogeneous and uniform resilient character throughout its entire thickness.
2. A printers blanket comprising a unitary body of felted fibrous material completely filled 2 with a saturating means whereby the saturated body is of homogeneous and uniform character throughout its entire thickness.
- 3. A printers blanket comprising a unitary body of felted fibrous material completely filled with a rubber saturating solution whereby the rubber saturated body is of homogeneous and uniform character throughout its entire thickness,
4. A printers blanket comprising a unitary body of felted fibrous material completely filled with a'saturating means of resinous material, whereby the saturated body is of homogeneous and uniform character throughout its entire thickness.
5. A printers blanket comprising a unitary body of felted fibrous material completely filled with a saturating means of cellulose derivatives,
. whereby the saturated body is of homogeneous and uniform character throughout its entire thickness 6. A printers blanket comprising a unitary body of felted fibrous material completely filled with a saturating means of asphaltic material, whereby the saturated body is of homogeneous and uniform character throughout its entire thickness.
'7. A printers blanket comprising a unitary body of felted fibrous material completely filled with a saturating means of glue-glycerine material, whereby the saturated body is of homogeneous and uniform character throughout its entire thickness.
'rrmononn E. KNOWLTON.
