Abstract

The Suspended Pin Chair is a piece of furniture intended for seating. The chair consists of a frame, tension material (which also serves as the seating material), and a suspended pin. The frame is built out of a rigid material and forms the basis of the structure of the chair. The tension material spans between the frame and the suspended pin, supporting the suspended pin in space in a fixed position, creating the seating surfaces of the chair. The geometry of the tension material is centered on the suspended pin with branches that extend outward from the suspended pin, connecting at corresponding locations on the frame. The suspended pin is built out of a rigid material that creates the center point around which the tension material is located. The suspended pin is not attached to the frame and is supported in a fixed position in space by the seating material.

  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • The Suspended Pin Chair relates to the field of furniture design. It is a device for supporting the weight of a person in a seated position. Prior to this invention, there are no invented chair designs that utilize the simplicity of a suspended rod or “pin” to create the seating surfaces of the chair.
  • BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The Suspended Pin Chair is a piece of furniture intended for seating. The seating material is used as part of the structure of the chair. This is accomplished by the seating material spanning between the chair frame and a single rod or “pin” that is held in space in a fixed position by the tension of the seating material and is otherwise not attached to the frame of the chair. The suspended pin is located to create the geometry of the seating surfaces.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • The Suspended Pin Chair is composed of three elements: the frame, the tension material, and the suspended pin. The frame is built out of a rigid material that forms the basis of the structure of the chair. The tension material spans between the frame and the suspended pin creating the seating surfaces of the chair. The geometry of the tension material is centered on the suspended pin with three branches that extend outward from the suspended pin center to connect at three points on the frame. One of the three branches is the horizontal seating'surface, the second branch creates the seat back, and the third branch simply ties back to the frame ensuring that the pin is supported in space in a fixed position. The tension material varies from a continuous length of rope or chord that wraps around the frame and the pin, a series of loops that span between the frame and the suspended pin, or any other material that spans from the frame to the suspended pin and supports the suspended pin in space. The suspended pin is built out of a rigid material that creates the center point around which the tension material is located. The suspended pin is located to allow the tension material to create the seating surfaces by spanning between the frame and suspended pin. It is unattached to the frame and is supported in space by the tension material.
  • The frame is to be built first with the three points of connection being smooth and free from abrasions that could damage the seating material. They need to be located to allow a comfortable seating position. The use of end caps or washers are needed to keep the seating material from sliding off the edge of the frame. The suspended pin must be built of a rigid material to adequately resist the tension forces that will be placed on it. It must have end caps or washers to keep the seating material from sliding off the edge of the suspended pin. The suspended pin must be temporarily supported in its final location while the seating material is installed. After the seating material is completely installed in its final position with all connections between the suspended pin and the frame complete, the temporary supports holding the suspended pin in place are to be removed. After this step, the suspended pin is held in place by the tension material only, which also serves as the seating material.

Claims (1)

1. The Suspended Pin Chair is defined as a piece of furniture intended for seating in which the seating surfaces are created by material in tension (which also serves as the seating material), spanning between a rigid frame to an otherwise unattached rod or pin, suspending it in space in a fixed position, located to create the seating surfaces.
