JOSEPH KAYLOR, OF PITTSBURG PENNSYLVANIA.
IM PROVEM ENT IN lNVALlD-BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,643, dated February 19,1878; application filed May 16, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH KAYLOR, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Invalid-Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in. which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead or couch embodying my invention, the mattress and its frame withdrawn. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, the device being in position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, showing the devices for raising and lowering the mattressand its frame. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section.
Like letters refer to like parts wherever they occur.
My invention relates to the construction of invalid bedsteads, couches, &c.
I will now proceed to describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may make and use the same.
In'the drawing, A' A indicate the head and foot boards of a bedstead or rails of a couch,
and BB the side rails thereof, from the latter of which is stretched a sheet of canvas or other suitable material, which will give a fixed bed-bottom, O.
A- rigid material may be employed for the fixed bottom; but canvas or sacking which is soft, flexible, and will yield slightly to the form is preferred, and is usually secured at one side to a sliding bar, 0, controlled by screws 0 which pass through the side rails of the bed, and serve as means to tighten up or stretch the bottom C. At a suitable point in fixed bottom 0 a commode or bed-pan opening, 0 is formed.
Secured to the inside of the head and foot boards or rails A A, at the lowest point the mattress-frame is to descend, are cleats or bars cl d, for the mattress-frame to rest upon when lowered; and secured in guides in the cleats d are slides or extension arms d, which can be drawn out to support the mattress frame when the latter is withdrawn from beneath the fixed bottom 0, as shown in Fig. 1.
D indicates the mattress-frame, of any suitable form, and preferably grooved slightly upon its under surface, so that it shall rest steadily upon the devices by which it is raised and lowered. D represents the mattress.
J ournaled in the head and foot boards A A, at a point or points just below the rests or cleats cl, are two or more shafts, E, provided with eccentric projections or cams e, of sufficient size to raise the mattress and its frame the desired height to bring it against the fixed bottom 0, said cams or the shafts being so connected by a link or links, 6, that the cams move in unison, but in opposite directions, so as to raise and lower the frame equally and evenly.
One or both of the shafts E may be fitted with a crank or hand-wheel and ratchet mechanism.
In order to insure the vertical rise and fall, and the entrance of the movable bottom or mattress-frame within the side rails B B of the bed, guide-pieces g are secured to the bedstead, as shown, and are hinged to turn back out of the way when the mattress and its frame are to be withdrawn.
If desired, the hinged guides may be extended or enlarged, so as to form doors or sides, which shut below the side rails B B and inclose the parts beneath the fixed bottom.
These devices are employed as follows: The occupant of the bed rests upon the fixed bottom 0, and the movable bottom or mattress and frame D D are brought up beneath and against the fixed bottom by means of the cam mechanism, as shown in Fig. 2, to relieve the fixed bottom 0 and support the occupant of the bed.
When the commode is to be used or the bedding aired, the cams e are reversed to lower the mattress-frame upon rests 01, when the commode can be readily introduced or, if the mattress is to be removed or turned over, or more room is required, the slides d or extension-rests are drawn out, the guides g by link 0, and adapted to raise and lower the turned back, and the mattress and frame movable frame, substantially as specified.
pulled out from beneath the fixed bottom. In testimony whereof I, the said JOSEPH Having thus described my invention, what KAYLOR, have hereunto set my hand. gnctlailgli and desire to secure by Letters Pat- JOSEPH KAYLOR V In an invalid-bedstead, the combination of Witnesses: the fixed bottom 0, the movable bottom or JAMES I. KAY,
mattress-frame D and the cams e, connected F. W. BITTER, Jr.
