@ur invention relates to improvements in car doors for railway cars.
' An object of our invention is to provide a door structure incorporating a door supporting track runway and door supporting anti-frictionV means in combination with a weather and dust-proof seal at the lower margin of the door.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door and anti-friction door supporting means which may be applied in a restricted'space and still maintain adequate Strength to prevent bending and warping of the door.
A more specic object o1" our invention is to combine anti-friction door supporting elements in the door structure with the structural' elements of the door and car framing in such a manner as to strengthen the door. y

Referring first to the construction illustrated in Figures 1 to 5, inclusive: n

The outer edge of the threshold plate is formed' with a depending wall IB, which in cooperation with vertically extending walls Il and I8 carried by the front and rear door posts respectively con-V sttute the face of the car wall adjacentthe lower portionof the door opening A. Said door open.- ing A is adapted'to be closed by a sliding door B which is adapted to have sliding movement on a; track C disposed adjacent the lower margin of the' door opening.
The track C is preferably in the form of a'Z-bar having its web i9 horizontally disposed and ex'- tending outwardly beyond the face of the car wall adjacentthe door opening Yto provide a runway of extended width outwardly of the door opening.` The inner flange 20 of the track extends upwardly 'from the web Iii and is riveted to the angle I3 and the opposite liangeii which extends downwardly,
' constitutes the outer edge of the door supporting track, said track extending lengthwise of the car beyond the rear door post Si yto permit of the doo:v being moved rearwardly a suiicient distance to clear the door opening. The track is formed with a cutaway portion 22 at the location where the track and door post lil intersect. K
The door B is preferably formed of metal and includes front and rear marginal members as indicated at 23 and 2i respectively, each said mem# ber being provided with an vouter flange 25 which overlies andV is riveted to the main body.V The frontY marginal member 23 is in the form of a Z-shaped member having its webv 21 extending transversely of the doorand a flange v28 disposed substantially in the inner plane of the door, said' nange 28 projecting forwardly beyond the web 21 to overlie` the facing Vwall I1 of the door post structure; The rear vertical'marginal member 24 is preferably formed of an angle having one of its flanges 29 transversely disposed and modified at its end as indicated at 35 to provide a U-shaped portion adapted to engage in wedging relation rearwardly of ange I8 of the rear door post structure. The said members 23 and 24 denne substantially the thickness of the door. The panelling 26 terminates an appreciable distance above the lower margin of the door and the lower portion of the door is completed by a panel and the latter is preferably formed of metal of greater thickness than the upper panel 25, said panel 3| includes an edge portion 32 which overlaps and is united with the main panelling 26 along a horizontal line of rivets 33; said panel 3|, below the joint, is offset inwardly as indicated at 3e and thence downwardly as indicated at 35, thereby presenting a facing plate portion lying in the inner plane of the door; said facing portion 35, as will be noted by reference to Figure fl, extends for an appreciable distance above the threshold plate and adjacent the runway surface is deiiected outwardly to present a substantial horizontal portion as indicated at 36 which lies substantially in the plane of the runway I9.
Beyond the depending flange 2| of the track, the panel 3| is again deiiected downwardly to present a vertical section 31 and' inwardly at 38 and thence upwardly at 3Q. The walls 31, 38 and 39 form a hook-shaped section at the lower extremity of the door which extends around'the depending ange 2| of the track for substantially the entire length of the door. At eachend of the door a connection is eiected between the bottom member 3| and the vvertical marginal members by means of brackets 49.
It will be noted that the shape of the member 3| provides for exceptional strength in trans- Verse, horizontal and vertical directions as the flanges 32, 34 and 35 provide in eifect a Z-shaped member at the location where the door is most likely to be damaged due to contact with shifting of lading in the car, or other external causes. In like manner the walls 35, 35 and 31 cooperate to form a Z-shaped section adjacent the supporting track and said beams in cooperation with the hook-shaped lower portion at the bottom of the door by reason of cooperating engagement between said hook-shaped portion of the door and the flange of the track eiectively protects the door against warping.
Adjacent each end of the door the lower flange is provided with an opening 4I and in alignment with each said opening a housing 42 is disposed in the channel-shaped offset provided by the walls 34, 35 and 36; Each said housing includes a hollow section having a pair of walls 43 and 44, spaced from each otherand united transversely of the door by vertical walls 45-45 and an upper wall 46, said last named wall 45 being adapted to bear against the wall 34 of the channel shaped oiTset. The housing 42 which is preferably formed of a casting includes wall portions at the top and bottom as indicated at 41 and 48, said walls being adapted to overlie the edge wall portions 32 and 31 respectively of the beam member 3| and be riveted thereto by means of rivets 49.
In order to permit use of full headed rivets on the inner side of wall 31, for attachment of the door roller housing brackets, said wall is provided with bulged out portions 50 for the purpose of providing achambered portion to accommodate rivet heads 5| and maintain the latter free of and beyondthe depending flange 2 I. The walls 43 and 44 form supporting means fora pivot pin 52 on which is mounted a roller 53. The portion of the outer wall adapted to receive pivot pin 52 is extended lengthwise of the pin as indicated at 53, and said pin is retained against lengthwise displacement by a rivet member 54.
The outer wall 44 of the housings are reinforced in a Vertical direction by ribbing means 55 thereby utilizing the brackets as strengthening means intermediate the upper and lower portions of the channel shaped offset of member 3|. The body of the panel 26 above the lower panel 3| is reinforced by means of suitable bracing members 55 which have their lower ends secured to the upper portions of panel 3|.
In the modifications shown in Figures 6 to 10 inclusive: I indicates the usual side wall of a box car; |l|| the door boards; |82 the car side sill; and |03 the door posts, the latter being respectively disposed at the front and rear ends of the door opening. The door is indicated at D, said door being adapted to have sliding movement on a track E.
The track E is preferably in the form of a Z-bar having its web |04 horizontally disposed and extending outwardly beyond the face of the door opening to provide a runway extending for an appreciable distance outwardly beyond the face of the wall incorporating the door opening. The inner ange |05 of the track is riveted to the side sill and said track at its outer end is provided A with a depending flange |06.
The door D includes front and rear marginal members |01rand |08, each said member being of appreciable thickness and having anges |09 overlying and secured to door metallic panelling |5 and I I I, said door panelling is reinforced by a series of braces II2, I|3, |I4 and II5; the lower panel is preferably formed of greater thickness than the upper panel I IIJ and said respective panels are united along a horizontal line of rivets ||6. The panel III below the joint ||6 is deflected outwardly at II1 and extended downwardly as indicated at |I8, to extend below the depending ilange IBS of the track panel and said panel at its lower extremity is bent inwardly beneath the track as at I|9 and thence upwardly at |20 to present a hook-shaped portion extending around the said depending flange |56 of the track. Extended lengthwise of the door, on the inner side adjacent the floor of the car, there is provided a Zushaped member I2| which is attached by means of one of its flanges |22 to both the panels I and I I by rivets I I6, said Z-shaped member has its web |23 extending transversely of the door and is disposed with its other flange I 24 lying adjacent to the iioor to provide a facing plate for cooperation with the face of the car wall vadjacent the door opening. Intermediate the shaped portion the housings are provided withl walls |30 which are riveted to the wall ||8 of the bottom panel III.
The walls |25 and |25 support a pin |3I on which is mounted an anti-friction roller |32, said roller being adapted to have cooperating engagement with the track for supporting the door. The door supporting rollers |32 are located adjacent the ends of the doors and intermediate said supporting means there are disposed a plurality .of brackets |33 which are riveted to the face of the plate and serve as spacing and supporting means vfor the intermediate portion of the Ze shaped member I2|. l
In the modication shown in Figures 1l to 13 inclusive, our improved structure is shown in connection with anti-friction ball bearing supporting means. Y
In said embodiment of our invention, 2&0 indicates the side wall oi the car, 25| the floor boards, 22 the ear side sill and 283 the door posts. The door is indicated at F and the door supporting track at r'he track is in the form of a bulb angle having a web 204 horizontally dispos-ed and presenting a runway for the door; said track has the flange 205 overlying the car side sill and riveted thereto by rivets 206 and at the outer edge the trackway is provided with a depending flange 2&1, The door F includes front and rear marginal members 208 and 209, and the body of the door intermediate the vertical margins consists of metallic panelling 2 Hl riveted to the framing members and suitably reinforced on its inner side by members 2! The lower margin of the door is reinforced by plate member 2 i2 having its upper edge portion 2|3 disposed in overlapping relation with panelling 2|!) and riveted thereto by row oi rivets 2 I4, said member below the edge portion is deflected downwardly and outwardly as indicated at 2 l 5, thence downwardly as at 2|6, inwardly as at 2H and upwardly as at 2|8 to present a hook-shaped portion extending around the depending fiange 201 of the track.
On the inner side of the door there is disposed a beam member 2 i 9, said member having a vertical wall 22|) secured to member 2|2 and to the panelling 2|@ by means oi the row of rivets 2M, said member 22B is provided with a horizontal portion 22| and a vertical portion 222, the latter being disposed in the inner plane of the door; said member 2 9 by reason of the Z-shape formation imparted by the ilanges 22B, 22| and 222 serves to materially strengthen the door against bending. Interposed between the panel 222 and 3HE there is provided movable anti-friction door supporting means 223 consisting of a carriage member 224 having a pair of anti-friction balls 225 at each end thereof, said anti-friction means are adapted to bear on the runway of the track and on the underside of wall 22| of the member QES. The wall 22| is extended to the opposite sides o wall 23S as indicated at 225, for the purpose of extending the bearing surfaces above the anti-friction means.
It will be observed that the various modiiications of our invention provided for the application of anti-friction door supporting means in locations where they are protected against damage from the interior and exterior of the car, and the disposition of said supporting means in the body of the door permits of the maximum strength being built into the door, inasmuch as the inner and outer walls of the door provide a beam eiiect to stiffen the door and counteract bending tendencies.
Furthermore, the parts are of simple construction such as may be readily manufactured and assembled.
While we have shown and described preferred embodiments of our invention the same are merely illustrative and we contemplate all changes ed hereto.
What We claim is:-
1. The combinationgwith a; car body havinga door opening and a sliding door for said opening; ofja track located at the lowermargin of said opening, said track presenting a substantially horizontal runway and a depending flange; said door at its lower edge being formed with an angularly bent plate portion presenting horizontal and vertical wall sections lying above the runway and outwardly of the depending wall of the track respectively; said horizontal wall section of the door having openings therein; anti-friction door supporting means disposed outwardly of the plate and extending through the openings for support ing engagement with the track; said depending wall section of the door beyond the flange, being beneathand rearwardly of said depending flange of the track.

In a railway car, the combination with a supporting track having a horizontal runway and a depending flange adjacent the outer edge of said runway; of a door mounted for sliding movement onfsaid runway, said door having a panel adjacent its lower portion formed with edge wall portions extending lengthwise of the door-in a plane parallel with the main plane of the door, said panel intermediate the edge portions being ofset'inwardly in the V`plane of the supporting track runway; openings formed in the lower portion thereof; door roller supporting housings disposed in the oiiset and secured to the respective edge portions of the panel member; and a roller pivotally mounted on each housing, each said roller being disposed in alignment with and extended through one of the openings in the offset.
3. In a metal door of the sliding type formed of sheet metal panelling extending the width of the door; a panel at the lower portion of the door, said panel being inwardly offset to substantially channel-shape with a lower wall extending substantiallyhorizontally and having openings formed in said horizontal wall; and door supporting means located in said channel shaped offset, said door supporting means including rollers adapted to extend through the openings in the lower horizontal wall and bear on the supporting track.
4. The combination with a car having an opening and a door supporting track located at the lower margin of the opening, said track having a horizontal runway portion and a depending iiange at its outer edge; of a door mounted for sliding movement on said runway, said door having adjacent its lower edge a plate member having an inwardlyoifset portion providing a horizontal portion extending above the runway of the track and having openings formed therein; said plate member being extended downwardly along the outer face of the depending flange and bent to provide a hook-like extremity for the lower edge of the door, for enclosing the depending flange of the track; and door supporting means for the door disposed outwardly of the said offset portion; said means including rollers adapted to project downwardly through the openings formed in the horizontal portion of the plate member.
5. In a sliding door structure for railway cars,
the combination Awith a door opening formed in the wall of a car; of a track at the lower portion of the door opening, said track having a depending flange; a door of appreciable thickness adapted to slide along the side of the car wall on said track to close said opening, said door having the main body portion formed of sheet metal pansaid offset having elling disposed in the outer plane of the door, said door at its'lower margin having a panel section dished inwardly from the outer plane of the door to present 'a vertical wall lying inthe inner plane of the door, said vertical wall section above the runway being deilected outwardly and downwardly to present a section lying in the outer plane of the door; said outer section being extended downwardly and bent to present a loop portion extending around the depending flange of the track.
6. In a railway car door of the type adapted to be mounted for sliding movement along a supportingtrack; said door being of appreciable thickness; a reinforcement for the lower portion of the door, said reinforcement including a panel formed with edge portions extending lengthwise of and in the outer plane of the door; said panel intermediate the edge portions being offset inwardly from the outer plane of the door; openings formed in the lower portion of the offset; door roller housings disposed in the offset, each said housing having a wall portion overlying and riveted to the lower edge portion; said edge portion being formed withV an outwardly bulged portion to accommodate rivet heads; and rollers carried by the said housings to extend through the openings in the offset Wall.
7. In a railway car door of the type adapted to be mounted for sliding movement along a runway, said door being of appreciable thickness; a panel for the lower margin of the door, said panel having edge wall sections extending lengthwise of the door in substantially the outer plane of the door, said panel intermediate the edge wall sections being offset inwardly to provide a channel shape presenting a web disposed in substantially the inner plane of the door; a plurality of openings formed in the lower portion of the offsets; bulged-out portions in the lower edge wall section adapted to provide recesses in the wall in alignment with each said opening; door roller housings disposed in the channel shaped offset and each formed with an attaching Wall overlying the bulged-out portion of the lower edge wall section; securing means for securing the attaching wall of the housings to the lower edge wall section, said securing means having a .headed portion lying in the recess; and a roller pivotally mounted on each housing, each said roller being disposed in alignment with and extended through one of the openings in the olset for cooperating with the track.
