the making of knives it is customary to provide a lining I 4 usually of thin soft metal such as brass, to which the sides are secured. This tamper may be applied either to a knife or holder structure having the linings [4 extending over the tamper portion as shown in Fig. 2 or the linings may be omitted in the tamper portion as shown in Fig; 3. If this tamper construction is applied to a knife the extension of both sides to form the tamper construction is preferable, but if the tamper is simply applied to a holder having a handle and an end portion at right angles to it, no second or other handle portion is necessary.

I claim: 7

1. A pipe tamper having a holder, a tamping head, and means for mounting the head on the holder to slide from a position at the side of the holder to a position at the end thereof.

2. A pipe tamper having a holder, a tamping head, and means for yieldingly mounting the head on the holder and slidable from a position along the holder to a position at right angles at the end of the holder.

3. A pipe tamper having a holder with a mounting slot, a tamper head, and means for mounting the head to slide in the slot from a position along the side of the holder to a position at right angles thereto at the end thereof. 7

4. A pipe tamper having a straight holder with an end at an angle thereto and a slot in the end portion, a tamper head, and means for mounting the head to slide in the slot from a position at the side of the holder to a position at the end thereof at right angles to its side position.

5. A pipe tamper having a holder handle with a curved end portion and a slot in the end portion, a tamper head, and means for yieldingly mounting the head for movement in the slot.

6. A pipe tamper according to claim 5, in which the tamper head has a pin extending through the slot and a washer at the end of the pin, and a spring between the holder and the head to hold it in place in the slot.

7. A pipe tamper according to claim 5, in which the under side of the head has a recess with a pin extending from the head through the slot, a washer at the end of the pin at the other side of the holder, another washersurrounding the pin at the recess side of the holder, and a spring in the recess around the pin and pressing the washer in the recess against the holder. 7

8. A pipe tamper having a holder with spaced sides and one turned toward the other at the end, a tamper head, and means for mounting the head in one of the holder sides for slidable movement against the other at the end thereof.

9. A pipe tamper having a holder with spaced sides turned together at the ends and one having a slot therein, a tamper head, and means mounting the head in the slot for movement from a side to an end position.

10. A pipe tamper having a holder with its end turned at a right angle thereto and a slot in the end portion, a tamper head, and means for resiliently mounting the head for movement in the slot and to engage the angled portion thereof to hold the head at right angles to the other portion of the holder.

11. In a pipe tamper according to claim 10, the mounting comprising a pin extending through the slot and a washer at the end of the pin which has a rounded inner surface adapting it to slide freely on the angled portion and to engage the turned portion of the end.

12. In a pipe tamper, a holder having opposite spaced sides turned toward each other at one end and one side and the turned portion having a slot therein, and a tamper head mounted in the slot and movable from a position against the side to a position at right angles thereto at the end.

13. The combination of a holder handle having a bent end with a slot therein, a tamper head, and a yielding mounting therefor including a washer at the side opposite the head with its inner side curved to slide around the bend at the end of the holder.

l4. The combination with a holder having spaced side-s turned toward each other at one end and a slot in this end of one side, a tamper head, and means mounting the head to slide yieldingly in the slot.

15. The combination with a knife having spaced sides extended at one end, said sides turned toward each other and one of said sides having a slot therein, of a tamper head, and means mounting the head in the slot for moving the head against the side and at an angle to the end thereof.

16. The combination with an implement having parallel sides spaced apart and extended at one end, a tamper head, and means for mounting the head in the said extended portion to slide from a side to an end position.

17. A combined knife and pipe tamper comprising parallel sides in which a blade is mounted the sides extending beyond the blade at one end, and one of the extending sides having a slot therein, a tamper head, and means extending from the head through and beyond the slot and covered by the other side for mounting the head to move against the side and at an angle to the end thereof.

18. A combined knife and pipe tamper having sides in which the knife blade is pivoted, the ends of the side extending beyond the blade when closed and one side including a slotted portion bent at the end, a tamper head, and means yielding mounting the head in the slot for movement against the last mentioned side and in the bent portion at right angles to the side.
