This invention relates to skiving machines and is herein illustrated as embodied in a leather skiving machine having a cylindrical knife.
In machines of this type a portion of the cy- 5 lindrical knife projects up through an opening in the table; and the work is fed to the knife by a yielding feed roll and a cooperating presser, the roll extending part way into the hollow of the knife and the presser being adjustable to vary the inclination of the scarf produced. lhe margin of the work to be skived extends over the roll beneath the presser, said work being guided through the machine by engagement of its edge withan edge gage. The opening in the table through which a portion of the knife and a portion of the roll project is large enough to expose a considerable extent of the edge of the knife which is not behind and thus guarded by the presser; and this exposed portion of the edge of the knife may cause injury to the operator or to the Work.
In order to prevent such undesirable occurrences there is provided in accordance with the present invention a guard comprising a stationary base and a member adjustable on the base toward and from the presser. In the illustrated construction, the base has an under face which is substantially spherical to correspond to the curvature of the adjacent surface of the feed roll, said base having a guideway curved to correspond to the curvature of the knife; and in this guideway is slidably mounted the curved stem of a member which may be adjusted toward and from the presser.
This and other features of the invention including certain details of construction and combinations of parts will be described as embodied in an illustrated machine and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing,
Fig. 1 is a perspective of a portion of a machine in which the present invention is embodied, the arrow showing the direction of feed movement of the work;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same portion of the machine viewed from the rear, the knife having been omitted and a piece of work being shown in process of being operated upon;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line IIIIII of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective of the guard viewed from its under side.
The machine, except for the guard, is of a wellknown construction and may be the same as the machine shown in United States Letters Patent No. 1,792,447, granted February 10, 1931, upon an application filed in the name of Eugene J. Ray. Before proceeding to a description of the new guard, a brief description of the machine and its mode of operation will be given.
The machine comprises a cylindrical knife I and a feed roll 9 the upper portions of both of which project up through an opening in a table I i. The feedroll has two portions one of greater diameter than the other but both of which have spherical surfaces. The roll is normally held horizontal in the position shown in Fig. 1 when no work is passing through the machine but is mounted for yielding movement in two directions, a downward bodily movement and a tilting movement about an axis at right angles to its longitudinal axis. A presser i3 having a curved workengaging surface is adjustable into different angular positions and by its position determines the inclination of the scarf produced, the roll yielding in the manner which has been described, and a vertical face H3 of the presser serving asa gage for the edge of the work. The knife and roll are rotated continually, and the work I00 passes through the machine moving away from the observer, as best shown in Fig. 3, with its margin held down by the presser IS on the narrower portion of greater diameter of the feed roll 9. No further description of the machine as thus far described will be given, reference being made to the patent for details of construction.
It will be seen that the opening in the table through which the knife and roll project has considerable extent considered in a direction transverse to the direction of feed movement of the work and that a considerable portion of the edge of the knife is exposed between the free end of the angularly adjustable presser and one edge of the opening. In the machine of the patent, a guard (see member in Fig. 3 of the patent having applied to its the reference numeral 55 bridges part of the opening at this point. In the present construction, a guard is provided in the form of a base it fastened by a screw ii to the table, said base having in its under side a substantially spherical surface l9 which is adjacent to the corresponding surface of the feed roll 9. In the upper surface of the base is formed a guideway 20 having a bottom which is curved to correspond to the curvature of the knife; and slidably mounted in this guideway is the correspondingly curved stem 2| of a member 23 which, as best shown in Fig. 3, engages the under side of the work lllil, the under side of this member 23 being also curved to correspond to the curvature of the knife. A screw 25 which passes through a slot in the stem 2i and is threaded into the base I5 holds the member 23 in adjusted position. This guard comprising the base 15 and the adjustable member 23 serves not only to prevent the fingers of the operator from injury by the knife but also to prevent the work from being injured. Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the member 23 extends in front of the knife close to the Workengaging surface of the feed roll and holds up out of the path of the knife 2. portion of the work which does not rest upon the roll and. which might otherwise be gouged'by the knife. The member 23 has a thin, beveled edge and may be adjusted into the position shown in Fig. 3 very close to the work-engaging portion of the roll so that a piece of flimsy Work, which has a tendency to sag into an opening beneath it, may be held up at the locality in which it is not supported by the. roll and caused to pass over the knife without liability of being injured.
Although the invention has been set forth as embodied in an illustrative machine, it should be understood that the invention is not limited in the scope of its application to the particular machine Which has been shown and described.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:-
1. A slziving machine having, in combination, a table, a cylindrical knife a portion of which projects through an opening in the table, a feed roll, a presser for cooperating with the roll, and a guard, said guard comprising a base and a member adjustable on said base toward and from the presser.
2. A s :iving machine having, in combination, a table, a cylindrical knife a portion of which projects through an opening in the table, a feed roll, a presser for cooperating with the roll, and a guard, said guard comprising a base and a member adjustable on said base in a path curved to correspond to the curvature of the knife toward and from the presser.
3. A skiving machine having, in combination, a table, a cylindrical knife a portion of which projects through an op ning in the table, a feed roll having a curved surface, a presser for cooperating with the roll, and a guard for bridging a portion of the opening in the table which is adjacent to one end of the presser, said guard comprising a base having a concave lower face adjacent to the feed roll and a member adjustable on the base in a curved path which corresponds to the curvature of the edge of the knife.
l. A skiving machine having, in combination, a table, a cylindrical knife a portion of which projects through an opening in the table, a feed roll having a spherical surface, a presser for cooperating with the roll, and a guard for bridging a portion of the opening in the table which is adjacent to one end of the presser, said guard comprising a base having a substantially spherical lower face to correspond to the spherical surface of the roll, and a member adjustable on the base in a path the curvature of which corresponds to the curvature of the edge of the knife.
