Description
J. H. MUDGETT.
Fence-Post.
No. 200,217. Patented Feb. 12,1878.
INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
".PHERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JosEPH H. MUDGETT, OF OAMANOHE, IOWA.
lM PROVEMENT lN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,217, dated February 12, 1878; application filed November 19, 1877.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPE H. MUDGETT, of Oamanche, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved post, with a portion broken away to show the construction more clearly. Fig.2represents thepost driven in the ground, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line as 00 in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The inventionconsists in the arrangement of clips in the re-entrant angles of a flanged post, so that their hooks shall be located back of a line intersecting the salient angles of two flanges and in the cylindrical form of the hollow head, by which it may be turned and drawn into the earth by a wrench or worm.
Referring to the drawings, A is theupper portion of the post, which projects above the ground and supports the wires. It has three longitudinal ribs arranged radially around the axis of the post, and having their outer edges equally distant from each other.
In the re-entrant angle between two of these ribs there are fingers, fasteners, or clips I),
which point upward, forming hooks, in which the wires are placed by springing the wires with the hands and placing the same behind thefingers or clips. Thus the wire, when tight, strains across the outer edges of the ribs and inner side of the fingers or clips.
The tapering coarsely-threaded worm 0 projects downward from the cylindrical part on the axial line of the portion A.
The post is made of cast-iron, and awrench is provided which fits the portion A, and by which the worm is forced into the earth. The worm, having the additional support of the cylinder B, stands sufficiently solid in the ground to resist any side strain that may be brought upon it.
The posts may be set several rods apart, and pickets may be attached to the fence-wires at intervals of a few feet to support the wires, and to I give the fence a more substantial appearance.
I am aware that it is not new, broadly, to use clips on wire-fence posts or a spiral groundpiece, but the head, with cavity B, is made to grasp the earth and prevent lateral displacement, while my clips, being introduced between the flanges of post, and being of less radial length, tighten and bite firmly on the wire.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.. The improved arrangement of the clips in the re-entrant angle of the post, in such manner that the hooks shall be located back of a line intersecting the salient angles of the two flanges, as shown and described.
2. The improved post having hollow head of cylindrical form, by which it may be turned and drawn into the earth, as specified. f
JOSEPH H. MUDGETT.
