More specifically stated, an object of the invention is to provide a hand protector in the form of a covering of suitable protecting material shaped to fit over the palm side of the wearer's hand and in which one portion of the palm covering is folded and secured upon itself to provide a thumb stall and which embodies an insert piece arranged to hold the side of the covering adjacent the thumb stall in rearwardly turned position to provide protection for the index finger and wrist of the wearer.

In conjunction with the foregoing, another object of the invention is to provide a projection on said insert piece adapted to overlie and reinforce the crotch of the thumb.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following description and from the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 4 shows the shape of the insert blank. While the invention is susceptible of various modifications and alternative constructions, I have shown in the drawing and will herein describe in detail the preferred embodiment, but it is to be imderstood that I do not thereby intend closed, but intend to cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing wherein a particular embodiment of the invention isshown merely for illustrative pin-poses, ll (Fig. 1 designates ahand protecting covering which is primarily formed from a blank of substantially regular form, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the blank may be cut from a. large sheet of material with a minimum of waste. With one side of the blank being selected as the front side (depending upon whether the finished protector is for the right or left hand). an 6 intermediate fold is made in the thumb section by turning the outer edge thereof, which parallels the cut, rearwardly into substantial registration with the marginal edge of the cut, the line of fold being approximately parallel to said cut as 10 indicated by the dotted line I in Fig. 3. The registering edges are secured together in any suitable manner, as by a line of metallic staples 15 (Fig. l) to form the thumb stall l6. 1

One edge I! of the insert is shaped to abut and be secured to the marginal edge of the cut on the rearwardly folded flap I], while another edge 20 of the insert is formed to abut and be secured to the peripheral edge 2| (Fig. 3) of the thumb section beyond the line of staples l5. Any suitable means, such as metal staples 2|, may be employed to secure the insert to the asociated AsmaybeseeninFig. Ltheinsertthusproduces a fold or curl 22 which is adapted to extend about the side and rear faces of the index finger and adjacent wrist portion of the wearer's hand whereby to aflord a full measure of protection to these parts. Preferably a strap or the like issecuredtoextendbetweentheupper or finger portion of the curl 22 and an opposite side of the hand section, which strap is shorter than the flat distance between the parts connected thereby so as to definitely maintain the shape of the fold 22 and to provide another fold 24 along the opposite side of the hand section for the protection of the outer or little finger side of the users hand.

It is preferred that the insert it be provided with a projection or tongue 25 of substantial length which is so located that, when the parts are assembled. the tongue will extend across and beyond the crotch of the thumb stall. Staples 26 or the like secure the tongue in this position, whereby to reinforce the crotch. Usually the front surfaces of the hand section and thumb stallhaveanoverlyingreinforeingsheetflw cured thereto as by staples 28. Where this reinforcement is used, a notch 29 is formed therein to receive the tongue 25, thus avoiding an undesirable accumulation of material at this point.

It will be evident from the foregoing that a novel protecting means has been provided wherein the hand covering, due to its regular shape, may be fashioned without undue waste of material, while the insert l8 and strap 23 may be fashioned from pieces of scrap material. The comparatively few parts which comprise the completed article may be easily and speedily fastened together, and these lines of fastening are, for the most part, disposed on the rear side of the protector where they are not subject to wear or excessive strain. The article, therefore, has ample strength to withstand such rough usage as would be encountered in industrial plants, is fashioned to afford ample protection to the wearer, and maybe manufactured and sold at a relatively low cost.

I'claim as my invention:

1'. A hand protector comprising, in combination, a sheet of protecting material fashioned to provide a blank having a cut extending inwardly from one edge to separate the blank into hand and thumb sections, said thumb section being bent upon itself intermediatesaid cut and an edge of the blank paralleling said out to bring said edge and the thumb section edge of the cut into registration, means for securing the registering edges together to form a thumb stall, a strap secured adjacent to the corner of the hand section formed by said cut and to an opposite edge portion of the hand section to provide folds adapted to extend around the wearers index and little fingers, and an auxiliary piece secured to the out edge of the hand section and to the marginal edge of the provide a blank having a cut extending inwardly of the sheet from one edge to separate the blank into hand and thumb sections, means for securing the outside edge of said thumb section to the adjacent side edge of said out to form a thumb stall, means for holding the opposite side edge of said out folded for the protection of the index finger, and an insert secured to traverse the. gap between said opposite side edge of the cut and the outside edge of the thumb section beyond the thumb stall.

In a hand pad, the combination of a protecting covering having a slit therein, one part of said covering being folded and secured to one margin along said slit to form a thumb stall, and an insert secured to said folded part and to the other margin along said slit and having a projecting piece secured in overlying relation to the thumb stall crotch.

4. In a hand pad, the combination of a protecting covering having a slit therein, one part of said covering being folded and secured to one margin along said slit to form a thumb stall, and an insert secured to said folded part and to the other margin along said slit to form a permanent curl along one side of the covering adjacent to said thumb stall for the protection of the'index finger and adjoining wrist portions of the wearers hand.

5. In a hand protector, the combination of a protecting covering comprising a blank having a cut therein extending a limited distance inwardly from one edge dividing the blank into hand and thumb sections, said thumb section being folded with the outer edge secured ad-
