11 (llaimel.y
This invention relates to improvements in hand luggage and has as an object to provide an inexpensive and exceptionally light piece of hand luggage having substantial capacity for carrying various articles of wear and other personal effects, besides means for carrying garments such as mens suits, and ladies dresses arrangement.
Like the copending application of George Henry Wheary, Serial No. 725,065, filed May 11,
in neatly folded 1934, this invention contemplates hand luggage having an enclosing envelope of flexible material held closed by a continuous interlocking fastening means.
In the luggage of the aforesaid application, the carrying facilities were restricted to mens suits .or ladies dresses and similar garments, whereas the present invention, 'through the provision of a light weight solid walled box of substantial capacity, affords means for carrying other articles and clothing besides suits or ladies dresses.
Conducivelto the primary object of the invention, namely, light weight suits or ladies' dresses are carriedI in a novel manner, partly within and partly without the box or entirely on the exterior of the box, to be held` in place by an enclosing envelope which surrounds the boxland provides the outer covering for the luggagel as inthe aforesaid copending application.
ment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as comewithin the scope of the claims.
The accompanying drawingsy illustrate several' complete examples of the physical embodiment of the' invention constructed according to the best,-
modes so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a hand luggage embodying this invention with part of the enclosing envelope broken away;
I Figure 2 is a vertical cross section view through Figure 1 on 'the plane of the line l2-A2;
Figure 3is a perspective view entirely removed;
4 of the box shownv in Figure 1, open, and with the enclosing envelope Figure 4 is a side elevation of the same box with its cover` closed, but shown with a mans coat hanger krather than the ladies shown in Figures 1 and 2;
garment hanger Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating a, modified embodiment of the invention;
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating another modiiied form of box;
AFigure 'l' is a perspective view of still another modified embodiment of the invention with a part of the enclosing envelope broken away; and Figure 8 is a vertical cross section view through Figure 7 on theplane of the line 8 8. Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views,'the numeral 5 designates a carrying box formed of light wood paneling or other suitable solid material and havingtop and bottom Walls 6 and 1 respectively, end walls 8 connecting the top and bottom walls and a side wall 9, all rigidly and permanently connected to `form a solid unitary structure. f
The open side of the box is closed by a cover` I0 hinged as at III' to the bottom wall 6. The cover I0 is of less height than the side wall 9, so that its free edge is spaced from the top wall 1 when the cover is closed. l
Mounted on the exterior of the cover adiacent its hinged edge is a garment hangerfstructure in-Y dicated generally by the numeral II and illustrated in Figures 1 and Zas being of that type 'particularly adapted for carrying ladies dresses.
I Garments draped over the hanger means Il, ex-
tend outwardly `across the outer face of the cover I0 to be folded over the free edge of .the cover and hang down into the interior of the box, a rounded molding I2 or other suitable means being located on said edge to avoid abruptly creasing the garments.
The portions of the garments which extend down over the inside surface of the cover are held in place by an apron I3 permanently connected to the cover adjacent its hinged edge and detachably connected at its outer edge `portion by snap fasteners I4 or other suitablelmeans.
As noted hereinbefore, the outer free edge of the cover over which the garments are folded, is spaced from the top wall of the box and the space provided thereby is suicient to accommodate the thickness of the garments as will be readily apparent. Thus, with the garments lproperly arranged on the cover, it is possible to openv and close the cover to afford access to the interior of the box without in anywise disturbing the arrangement of the garmentsthereon.
Surrounding the box and covering the portions of the garments on the exterior of the cover is an enclosing envelope indicated generally by the numeral l5. This enclosing envelope is fitted snugly to the box and comprises two complementary sections I6 and I1 permanently connected across the bottom of the box. In the present instance, the portion of the enclosing envelope, which covers the bottom Wall of the box, is formed in one solid piece, but it will be readily apparent that it may be composed of two parts sewed together.
The edges of the envelope sections which extend along the end and top walls of the box, have continuous interlocking fastening means I8 by which these edges may be quickly detachably connected, the sliders for interlocking the fastening means coming together at the top of the box, where they are protected by a ap I9 sewed to one of the sections and attached to the other section by a snap fastener 2l).
IA handle 2l, preferably of sectional construction as shown, is provided for carrying the luggage with the rounded edge I2 of the cover over which the garments are folded, uppermost. In this manner, the garments hang down from the support provided by the edge I2 when the luggage is in its normal carrying position.
The embodiment illustrated in Figure 4 is identical to that shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, except that in place of the ladies type of garment hanger Il, a mans suit hanger 22 is attached to the cover as at 23.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 5, the same type of mans coat hanger, as illustrated in Figure 4 is employed, but the garments draped thereon are not folded over the edge of the cover, but rather over a garment supporting bar 23 detachably mounted in any suitable manner on the outer free end portion of the cover, so that the entire garment is disposed on the outside of the box. 1 l
A strap 24 attached to the cover, at its ends by snap fasteners 25 serves to hold the garment against displacement, in which function it is assisted by the enclosing envelope fitted over the box as described in connection with the embodiment shown in Figure 1.
The modification shown in Figure 6 is very much similar to that illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, the distinction being that the cover 26 has marginal Walls 21 and 28 to give it depth. As in the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, the garment is draped on a hanger and folded over the outer edge 29 of the cover 26 to extend over the inner surface of the cover where it is held by a retaining board 30 detachably mounted in the cover by any suitable means:
In the modification shown in Figures 'l and 8,
wall 3| of the box, as clearly shown. The box 32 is of triangular shape in vertical cross section with the apex thereof provided by the rounded wall 3| over which the garments hang. A door or cover 33 forms part of one side ofthe box to afford access to the interior thereof. as will be readily apparent.
On the opposite side 34 of therbox, the hanger 35 on which the garment is draped prior to being folded over the rounded upper edge 3|, is attached.`
The enclosing envelope 36 is of a shape to correspond to that of the box, and as in the embodiments hereinbefore described, consists of two complementary sections permanently connected' be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, that this invention affords la novel carrier lfor mens suits or ladies dresses and other articles of wear and personal use, and that the entire luggage is exceptionally light in weight and particularly convenient to use.
