Description
UNITED STATES GEORGE XV. MCGILL, OF BUFFALO, NEW' YORK.
IMPROVED DOOR-FASTEN ER.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 19,937, dated April 13, 1858.
To LH whom, 1125 ntcty concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MCGILL, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Fastening Doors, whether opening-from without or from within; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof7 reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of myinvention consists in the construction of a door-fastener which maybe conveniently carried about ones person as a substitute for locks, bolts, dac., and which can be attached to any description ot' door, whether opening in or from a room, without difficulty.
'lo euableothers skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l in the accompanying drawings represents the article closed. Fig. 2 represents the fastener as applied to a door which opens out from a room.
The teeth ct a on the crooked blade B are pushed into the door Z. The thumb-screw O is then drawn into the socket d and the door is pulled to.
Blade B being shaped to the jalnb of the door allows it to shut. The gimlet-pointed screw C is then screwed into the jarnb and the door is secure; but should the door open into a room the teeth H H on blade I, Fig. 3, are pushed into the jamb of the door K. The thumb-screw L isscrewed to one side and the door is closed. The thumb-screw L is then screwed out across both jamb and door and secures the door from being pushed in.
The bladesB and I are secured together by the socket d, and the ange O on the thumbscrew C holds it in the socket d.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention,
I will now proceed to state what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. The formation of blade B, with its peculiar connection with blade I.
2. The use ot' the blade B, constructed as described and operating in connection with screw L and blade I and screw C, for the purpose specified.
GEORGE W. MCGILL.
Witnesses:
C. F. MCGILL, AURELIAN CONKLING.
