3 Claims.
This invention relates to rock drills or analogous percussive tools and more particularly to drill steel retainers therefor.V y
An object of the present invention is to provide a drill steel retainer which will prevent ejection of the drill steel from the front head of the drill during operation and one which is rugged in construction and may be quickly and easily moved into or out of steel retaining position.
More particularly the invention relates to a drill steel retainer for rock drills which is relatively simple in construction, comprising a pivoted retainer member or lever yieldably supported which may be guided into or out of steel retaining position together with simple positive acting locking means for holding the retaining member in adjusted positions.
With these and'other objects in view as mayl appear from the accompanying specification, the invention consists of various features of construction and combination of parts, which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawing, showing a drill steel retainer of the preferred form, and the features forming the invention 'will be specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a bottom plan of the improved drill steel retainer. i
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the improved retainer.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the improved drill steel retainer is attached to the front head 1 of a rock drill or analogous percussive tool and is provided for preventing the drill steel or tool from being ejected from the front head of the drill `during operation.
A latterly extending arm 3 is formed on the front head 1 of the drill and it is provided .with a transverse bore or opening 4 through which the retainer bolt 5 extends.
The retainer bolt 5 has a head 6 formed upon one end thereof which engages against the under or outer side of the arm 3 and the'head` 6 is yieldably held against the arm 3 by means of a spring 7. The spring 7 is tensioned by a nut 8 threaded on the threaded end of the retainer bolt 5.
The retainer bolt 5 has spaced ears 9 formed thereon on opposite sides of the head 6 and the retaining member or lever 10 is pivotally connected to the ears 9 by a suitable pin or bolt 11. When the pivoted retainer lever 10 is in its inward position as shown in solidlines in Fig.
a corporationoff ital, serial No.l 715,881
2 of the drawing, the forked head 12 thereof engages about the drill steel 2 as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing and .in the path of the collar 13 formed on the drill steel, forming alimit stop for preventing the Asteel 2 from being ejected or falling out of the front head 1. When it is desired to remove the drill steel 2 from the front head 1 the pivoted lever 10 is guided downwardly into the dot and dash position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing which moves the forked head 12 out of the path of the collar 13.
The pivoted retainer member or lever 10 has an outwardly projecting ear or lip 14 formed on its upper end to provide a projection to be engaged by the foot or handof the operator. A
flat surface 15 is also formed on the inner side of the free end of the retainer lever 10 and engages against the outer end of the arm 3.
A latchv mechanism is provided for holding the pivoted. retainer lever 10 in adjusted positions against attening or rocking movement during operation of the drill. This latch mechanism comprises a latch plunger 16 which is slidably mounted in the counter-bore 1'7 formed in the retainer bolt 5. A spring 18 in the bore 19 in the retainer bolt 5 urges the latch plunger 16 outwardlyr into engagement with the iiat surface 19' formed on the lever 10 when the retaining lever is in steel retaining position. When the lever 10 is out of steel retaining position the plunger 16 engages the flat locking surface 20.
The latterly extending arm 3 has a projection 21 formed thereon which engages the head 6 for guiding movement of the head and preventing its rotation of the bolt 5 with respect to the arm `3.
It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the speciiic construction or arrangement o-f parts shown but that they may be widely modified within the invention defined by the claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a percussive tool, the combination with a front head adapted to receive the collared shank of adrill steel and having a laterally extending arm formed thereon, a retainer bolt yieldably carried by said arm and a pair of spaced ears formed thereon, a retainer member pivotally connected to said ears and having a head for co-operating with the collared shank to preventV ejection of the steel from thetfront head, flat looking surfaces formed on said retainer member and a locking latch carried by said retainer bolt for engagement with said flat locking surfaces to lock the retainer member in or out of steel retaining position, and a guiding projection formed on said laterally extending arm and engaging said retainer bolt.
2. In a drill steel retainer, the combination with a drill fronthead, a drill steel shank and a collar on said shank, of an arm on said front head, a retainer bolt extending through said arm, a retainer-,member pivotally carried by vsaid bolt and havingral forked he'ad for :cooperation with said collar to prevent ejectionV of the drill steel, a spring pressed plungerv carried by said retainer bolt, said retainer member having a Aplurality of flat surfaces thereon forl engagement vby said plunger to hold said retainer member in adjusted position. n Y L 3. In a drill steel retainer, the combination with a drill front head, a drill steel shank and a collar on said shank, of an arm on said front head, a retainer bolt extending through said arm, va retainer member pivotally carried by said bolt and having a forked head for cooperation with said collar to prevent ejection of the drill steel, a spring pressed plunger carried by said retainer bolt, said retainer member having a plurality ,0f flat Surfaces thereon. f rY engagement lby said plunger toholdsaid :retainer memb'e` in adjusted position, said retainer `membe` having a ilat laterally extending surface thereon 'for engagement with the end of said arm to limit the movement of the retainer member in one direction, andan ear formed on the end of v.saidretainermemberremote from said forked head .and projecting outwardly and upwardly from said'at surface.
