REEL

4 Claims.
This invention relates to reels, and more especially to metallic reels for holding cable or other heavy material susceptible of being wound on reels.
Heretofore it has been the practice inmany instances to construct the heads of reels for storing cables of wood in order that protecting lags might be nailed thereto. However, with the development of devices for retaining the lags on the heads without nailing, it becomes advantageous to use reels provided with metallic heads.
The object of the present invention is to provide a strong and durable metallic reel of a simple and efficient design `adapted to be provided with enclosing elements.
In accordance with the general features of the invention a reel is provided consisting essentially of a flanged drum provided with heads havingv circumferential outwardly extending anges for accommodating wooden lags used to enclose the cable, and of means coacting with the head at the periphery and the outer edge of the circumferential flange to stiften the former and support the latter.
Ihe vassemblage of the novel structure will now be described asdisclosed in the accompanying drawing, like numerals being used for similar parts.
Fig. 1 is an end View of the assembled drum;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of the reel taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l exposing a cable Wound thereon;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged cross-sectional view of a bracing plate for supporting the flange at the circumference of the head taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of a modified form of this same bracing plate.
The reel comprises two circular heads 5 of sheet steel and a flanged steel drum 6. Each head has a peripheral outwardly extending flange 7 and a bracing plate 8 made in four sections and fitted to the reel head. The bracing plate 8 is secured in a U-shaped portion 9 formed in the peripheral outward extending flange by bending the end thereof inwardly or it may be secured to this flange by welding, the two structures being shown in Figs. 3 and 4 respectively. The other end of the bracing plate 8 is fastened to the head at a point intermediate its center and circumference by intermittent welds shown at point l0. This type of bracing structure Ystiffens the head at the periphery as well as gives support to the flange, which is used to support protecting wooden lags 25 which completely enclose the circumferential portion of the reel. The heads 5 are provided with pressed ribs 14 for the purpose of stiffening, and with hand holes 15 to facilitate the assembling of the reel.
What is claimed is:
1. In a reel for accommodating flexible material, two heads provided with center holes and peripheral outwardly extending anges, a drum, said drum having inwardly bent flanges, bolts passing through the flanges of the drum and the heads to hold the drum in place, hubs fitting the holes in the center of the heads, a tubular member whose inside diameter is the same as that ofthe holes fitting the hubs and holding the heads against the hubs, and bolts passing through the hubs and heads for holding the hubs to the heads.
2. In a reel for accommodating flexible material, two heads, a drum having anges, means for keeping the centers of the heads in uniform relative position, means for holding the drum in position consisting of bolts passing between the heads and through the flangesof the drum, and bolts fastening one flange of the drum to one head, each of said heads having ribs pressed therein and provided with flanges circumferential thereof for accommodating lags secured thereto by bands for protecting and holding the cable on the reel, and bracing means coacting between' said anges and the heads to support the flange and stiften the head.
3. In a reel for accommodating flexible material, a drum, heads with hand holes to permit easy assembly with the drum, lags to t the circumference of the heads, each of the heads having flanges to support the lags, a plate extending between the face of the head and the flange for bracing the ange, and bands for securing the lags to the flanges.
4. A reel comprising spaced heads having center holes, hub members tting said holes, a tubular spacing member whose inside diameter is the same as that of the holes fitting the hubs and holding the heads against the hubs, and means extending through said heads and said hub members for holding said heads and said spacing member together by compression.'
