NATHANIEL JONES, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,639, dated November 27, 1877; application filed November 13, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL JONES, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to trusses, and has for its object to make a more complete and simple mode of attachment of the straps, and the means for bringing the draft or strain at the lower part of the truss; and it consists in cutting from the plate and bending outward simple catch projections, which will allow any ordinary open buckle to be used, and also in providing a triangular buckle, having its connection with the plate at the lower part of the plate. and lower side of the buckle, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a similar view with the straps removed.
A represents a truss-plate, which is provided on its outer edge with the outwardlyprojecting flange a, and with slots 1), for the attachment of any known or desired pads B. Between the flanges are formed outwardlyprojecting lips or catches or loops 0, which are turned outward, and have their open parts projecting inward toward the center of the by the housewife or other person by the simple means of a needle and thread, or by simply passing the strap through the buckle in the ordinary manner, as in suspenders.
It is very desirable to have the draft or the strain upon the pad at the lowest possible point, and at the same time have the straps stand or held in proper position on the platethat is to say, so that the strap shall not project below the plate. To accomplish this means, a triangular buckle-plate, G, is provided, having an ordinary buckle upon one end, and upon the other an opening, d, upon its lower inner side, fitting over the catch 6, which is near the lower edge of the plate A. This buckle O is, upon the same principle, fastened in the same manner, and by the same means, as the buckle upon the opposite side, and operates upon the same principle, it being made in triangular form, as described, simply to bring the strain or pressure at the lowest desirable point of the plate.
D represents the flexible body-band, and E the perineal band, which may be of any known or desired construction.
I am aware that truss-plateshave been used with openings in connection with a buckle having a catch to engage with such openings, also catches attached to the truss-plate, turningupward and inward for the attachment of a buckle or fastening. I do not, therefore, claim such device or devices; but,
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured byLetters Patent, is-
1. The truss-plate A, provided with the catches or loops, forming a part of said plate, turned outward and inward toward the center of the plate, whereby an ordinary buckle may be attached and detached, as described, in
combination with suitable straps, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The triangular buckle, provided with a fastening device at its inner lower side, in
combination with a plate and suitable catch or loop, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NATHANIEL JONES.
Witnesses WM. B. UPPERMAN, FRANK GALT.
