IMPROVEMENT IN BEDFBOTTOMS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,621, dated November 27, 1877; application filed October 1, 1877.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES EAJJE, of Honesdale, in the county of Wayne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBedBotto1ns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof; and Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detached views of the same.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters.

This invention relates to a certain improvement in bed-bottoms; and it consists of springs consisting each of two springs, having their lower ends coiled into tubes, which receive pins from transverse supporting-pieces, and having their upper' ends buttoned to caps or connecting-pieces upon which the slats are supported, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, A A refer to the side pieces or rails of the bed. To theinner sides of the rails A A are adjusted stirrups or brackets G G, to receive the ends of and support the cross-pieces b b 11, supporting the slatsupporting springs. The stirrups or brackets O C are slotted, as at o 0, through which slots pass screws or other suitable fastenings e c, entering the rails or side pieces A A, to permit of the vertical adjustment of the said stirrups to correspondingly affect the bottom. In order to attach these stirrups or brackets to what is termed the cord bedstead, the side pieces of which (or rails) are round or cylindrical, they (the stirrups or brackets) are also provided, upon their rear sides, with projections or studs 01 d, which enter or rest against the said rails to hold the said stirrups or brackets in a vertical position. The crosspieces I) b b, which are supported in the stirrups or brackets G O, are provided upon their upper surfaces with short pins or studs 6 e e, for the attachment thereto of springs.

D D D are three series of springs, one series supporting the head ends of the slats, the middle series supporting the slats attheircenters,

and the other series supporting the foot ends of the slats. Each spring in itself, with the exception of some of those arranged centrally of the bed, is a compound spring, consisting of two spiral springs, f f, made, preferably,

tapering toward their lower ends, which ends are coiled compactly, so as to form tubes f f,

to receive the pins or studs e e of the crosspieces I) b b, and assist-in holding the springs upon said pins. The springs f f are preferably formed from oneand in the same piece of wire, with their connecting or uniting wire f I bowed or standing out at a right angle, as seen in the drawing, to serve as a foot to aid in preventing the springs from careening and in holding them in an erect position. The upper or en. larged ends of the springs ff are connected together and covered by a short piece or cap, g,

the lower side of which is recessed or grooved, as at g g, to receive the said ends of springs. The ends of the springs are confined in the recesses g g of the cap g by buttons h h, ar-

ranged or disposed across said recesses, and

bearing upon the lower side of the cap.

The buttons are attached to screws or pendants h h passing through the cap g, preferably provided with leather strips, which serve as nuts upon the lower ends of the screws. The leather pieces or nuts are preferably tacked in position to the buttons.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the springs D D, consisting each of two springs, f f, the lower ends of which are coiled into tubes, of the crosspieces I) b, having pins e 6, caps or connectingpieces g g, buttons h h, and screws h h, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
