IMPROVEMENT IN COLTER OR JOINTER ARMS FOR PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,448, dated November 27, 1877; application filed May 23, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANCIS R. BEAL and SPENCER CLARK, of Northville, in the county of Wayne and State of -Michigan, haveinvented an Improvement in Colter or J ointer Arms for Plows, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of our invention relates to certain improvements in the construction and attachment of colter or jointer arms for plows, so arranged as to be durable and strong, while at the same time it will allow the beam to be adjusted to the proper line of draft, as may be required, when more than one horse is employed, and still allow the colter or jointer to retain its correct relative position to the point and land-side.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved arm as attached to a plow. Fig. 2 is an enlarged and detached view of the arm, in perspective.
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
In the accompanying drawings, the arm A is shown provided with bolt-hole a, by means of which and a suitable bolt the rear end of the arm is secured to the standard of the plow, as shown, or, if preferred, the rear end of the arm may be secured to the plow-beam, although securing it to the standard, as above, is the preferable way.
The opposite end of the arm is provided with a slotted flange, I), through which a suitable bolt secures this end of the arm to the beam,
the slot allowing of an adjustmentof the colter or jointer to a line with the point, whether the beam be thrown into or out from the land, as, may be necessary in using two or three draft-horses. Securing this end of the arm to the beam, as described, also adds to its strength and steadiness. This end of the armis also provided with a socket, d, to receive the colter or jointer standard, and a set-screw, h, by means of which the colter or jointer' standard is held in place.
