Liil'it PIPE HOLDER Elmer Raymond Littell, St. Bernard, Ohio Application September 14, 1932, Serial No. 633,066
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful article of manufacture in the form of a portable pipe holder or balancer. The material that is preferably employed is ilexible rubber although other suitable materials might be used if found advisable. A majority of pipe smokers rind considerable annoyance in trying to rest on a table or other object a pipe with a round or curved smooth bowl. My invention is designed to be easily detachably attached to the bowl of the pipe,
when and where it is desired to rest the pipe on any object; and the device can be easily removed from the pipe when the pipe is not in use.
Under present conditions a pipe smoker each and every time he desires to set his pipe down without spilling the contents or tipping the bowl, must approach, look for or be near some nonportable ash tray, or l.pipe rack or stand of some kind. My inventionA owing to its compact form, 20 small size and light weight can be carried on the person in the vest pocket of the smoker at all times enabling him to set aside the pipe without spilling or tipping it.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple `vest pocket device which can easily be attached to or detached from a pipe and will hold the pipe in any desired position when placed on a table or any other surface.
A further object is to provide the base of the holder with a weight molded therein to aid in the support of the pipe in a balanced upright position.
A still further object is to provide the base with suitable ribs or corrugations to present a roughened surface to that part of the holder which makes possible the balance, and contacts with the surface on which the device is placed.
My invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims and from the drawing, in which latter:- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my device attached to a pipe and resting on a suitable surface,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of my device,
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same taken in the plane of the line 3--3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a similar view of a modified form of my invention, and;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a still further modication.
5.0 My device comprises a hat base 11 of any size or shape, provided with an integrally molded flexible vacuum cup 12 extending upwardly therefrom and comprising a concave recess 13 arranged to be attached to the smooth bowl of any pipe 14.
In the modication shown in Fig. 4 I provide a weighted core 15 in the base 11 to aid in giving the device more balance and preventing the pipe from being overturned.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a further modiiication in that the base 11 is provided with ribs 16 to give the base a greater frictional contact vth the surface it is placed upon.
In using my device, which can be easily carried on the person in the pocket or kept in a convenient place owing to its compact form, small size and weight, the user meistens the concave cup 13 and presses it against the bowl of the pipe for forcing out the air therein and creating a suction on the pipe bowl thus rmly holding the device to any portion oi the pipe bowl. With the attached base, the pipe can then be placed with the bowl upright on any surface, whether it be the arm of a chair, a table or in fact any surface where it is handy to rest the pipe. The base 11 is adapted to alford rests at the opposite sides of the vertical center of the bowl and having, as shown, a substantially flat under surface and a lateral straight edge portion, the corners of which, that is, those portions located beyond said vertical center are aligned, it will be seen that when the pipe is positioned with the center vertical plane of the bowl and stem substantially in a plane normal to a supporting surface the contacting under surface or lateral edge or corners at the edge portion will prevent sidewise rolling over of the pipe.
The flat base portion extending about the vacuum cup will balance the pipe and maintain the bowl thereof in an upright position preventing spilling of the ashes or burning tobacco.
I am aware that vacuum cups are used extensively to attach articles to various surfaces but my invention is based on the combined features of the vacuum cup extending from a iiat base, which base balances the pipe, and the cup is merely used to form a suitable detachable attachment to the pipe bowl.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A holder for smoking pipes having the usual bowl and stem portions, comprising a suction cup adapted to engage any portion of the base of the pipe bowl and shank to constitute a portable detachable connection therewith, and laterally projecting supporting base portions on the cup adapted to afford rests at the opposite sides of the vertical center of the bowl, said base portions having a substantially flat undersurface, a lateral adapted to afford rests at the opposite sides of the vertical center of the bowl, said base portions having a substantially at under surface, a lateral edge of which has its corners lying in a straight line substantially coincident with the periphery of said lateral edge whereby when the pipe is positioned with the center vertical plane of the bowl and stern substantially in a plane normal to a supporting surface the contacted under surface or corners at the edge will prevent lsidewise rolling over of the pipe.
