I cm PUNCH Filed Dec. 8, 19:53 2 sheets-sheet '2 i a 1 ///g//) I W, Invento'r /4 5 iVa'ZZz'amEfape,
Attorney Patented Sept. 18, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT; OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a can punch and has for its object to provide a device of this nature for punching a pair of openings in a can used for milk and the like and at the same time providing a closure for said holes when the can is not being used, the device being simple in its construction, adjustable, easy to manipulate, inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly efficient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for'which it is desired.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying the features of my invention showing the same on top of a can.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof showing the upper portion of the can in section.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Figure 4 is a detail section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary top plan view of the can showing the hole punched therein.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of one of the washers.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that numeral 5 denotes an oblong flat plate or body. An oblong belt 6 is disposed about one end of the body 5 and riveted or otherwise secured thereto as at 7. A knife or punch 8 is formed on the bottom of the belt. Another oblong belt 9 is disposed about the intermediate portion of the body 5 and is slidable thereon and on the bottom of this belt 9 there is formed a knifev or punch 10. These knives 8 and 9 incline downwardly and converge downwardly toward each other as shown to advantage in Figure 2. Washers 11 are provided with slits 12 so that they may he slipped over the knives 8 and 10 to abut the under sides of the belts 6 and 9 and are held in place by shoulders 14 on the knives as is illustrated to advantage in Figure 4. The inner edges of the knives are sharpened as clearly illustrated in Figure 3.
. Thus by adjusting the belt 9 with respect to the belt 6 depending on the size of the can the knives may be disposed in position so that they may be punched through the top of the can as shown clearly in Figure 2 and when left in this position the wa hers and the knives close the slot like opening 15 formed by the knives. A spring 16 is fastened to the under side of the top portion of the belt 9 to engage the upper surface of the body so as to hold the knife 10 in proper adjusted position. A stop 1'7 is disposed about the other end of the body 5 to prevent accidental removal of the belt 9. Adjacent said other end of the body 5 on the under surface thereof is a scored or roughened portion 18 and the upper surface of the belt 9 is likewise scored or roughened as indicated at 19. This enables an operator to place his thumb on the surface 19 and his fingers under the surface 18 and easily adjust the knife 10 the desired distance from the knife 8.
It is thought that the construction, operation and utility of this invention will now be clearly understood without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
.A device of the class described comprising a body, a belt fixed to one end portion of the body, a second belt slidable on the body, knives depending from the belts, a spring associated with the slidable belt frictionally engaged with the body, and washers on said knives abutting said belt. 7
