Ladislaus Original application March 19, 1929, Serial No. 348,328. Divided and this application July 9,
1931, Serial No. 549,673. 1928 Y In Austria October 17,
7 Claims. (Cl. 273-73) This invention relates to improvements in means for Stringing tennis rackets with strings and the present application is a divisional application of applicants copending application filed March 22, 1929, Serial N0. 348,328.
A constructional example of the means employed is shown in the annexed drawing in which Y Fig. 1 is a string holder in front elevation,
Fig. 2 is a section on the line II-II of Fig. 1 with the string clamped,
Fig, 3 is a similar section with the clamp open and Fig. 4 is a section on the line IV-IV of Fig. 1.
A string holder is guided on a cross bar l and this latter is adapted to slide on two longitudinal bars not shown, which are mounted on the frame of the Stringing machine. Ihe string holder is movable in two directions at right angles 20 to each other. The string holder has two clamping jaws 6, 7 which have at their upper ends recesses 8, the distance apart of which corresponds to the distance apart of the longitudinal strings 9. The two clamping jaws are connected to each other by a link 11 and are adapted to slide vertically on a guide member 12 which is Shaped at the bottom to form a dovetail guide groove 13. On the guide member 12 is mounted a yoke or stirrup 14 in which a bolt 15 is carried.
In this bolt is keyed a rotating eccentric 16 which is operable through the handle 17. In a projection 18 on the guide member 12 slides a bolt 19 surrounded by a compression spring 20. This coiled spring bears at the one end against the 35A bar l and on the other end against a collar on the bolt 19, and forces this bolt into the position Shown in Fig. 3 so that the end of the bolt always bears against the eccentric 16. When the eccentric 16 is rocked by moving of the handle 17 downwardly, the jaws 6, 7 will be pressed against each other, but at the same time vthe bolt 19- will be forced downwards, so that under the action of the spring 20 now compressed, the dovetail guide groove 13 will be pressed against the The operation is as follows: `v
The string holder or xer is brought under the string which has just been strained by sliding it along the bars l to a position inside the frame 0f the racket and on that side on which lies the tensioning device which has been used. The clamping jaws 6, 7 are raised upwardsby hand a sumcient distance that the string is caused to lie between the clamping surfacesV and then by depressing the handle 17 the eccentric 16 is rocked. In this way the fixer is clamped fast to the bar l and the string 10 is also gripped between jaws 6, 7. When the pull of the stretching device not shown ceases, the string is still held and the end of the string can be drawn through the next hole in the frame of the racket.
What we claim is:-'Y
1. In a device Vfor Stringing rackets, a string fixer for holding the string taut after the same has been tensioned, said string xer being movable parallel to the working plane of the strings and having pivotally interconnected clamping jaws to grip the string, means for adjusting said jaws in a direction at right angles to the working plane of the strings, and means for securing the string holder in adjusted working position.
2. In a device for Stringing rackets, a string xer including pivotally interconnected gripping jaws for holding the String taut after the same has been tensioned, means for adjusting said string xer to the String being threaded, and means including a handle for actuating the jaws to grip the string and for simultaneously securing the string fixer in adjusted working position.
3. In a device for Stringing rackets, a string xer including gripping jaws for holding the string taut after the same has been tensioned, means including a support upon which to adjust the string xer to the string being threaded, and means for actuating said jaws to grip the string and simultaneously Secure the string holder in adjusted working position, said last mentioned means including an eccentric rotatably mounted upon the string fixer and rotatable to actuate said jaws, said means including a spring mounted upon the string xer to be tensioned by said eccentric to press said string fixer against its support to firmly maintain its adjusted position.
4. In an apparatus for tensioning the strings of tennis rackets, a clamping device comprising a guide, a movable support disposed thereon, a. movable clamping mechanism disposed on said Support, Said clamping mechanism being adapted to grip the racket strings'and to simultaneously lock the Said support to the guide.
5. In an apparatus for tensioning the strings of tennis rackets, a, string clamping device comprising a guide rail, a horizontally slidable support disposed onsaid rail,v a pair of vertically slidable jaws carried on said support, closing means for locking said jaws together and the said support to the rail. Y l
6. A device as claimed in claim 5, in which said closing means comprise an eccentric mounted on said support to lock the jaws together and a resiliently4 supported rod to lock-thesupportfto the rath. 5,; .a l Y.
7. In an apparatusfor tensioning the strings of tennis rackets, a string clamping device comprising a vguide rail, a slidable support provided with an opening and mounted thereon, apair of y slidable clamping jaws for"A gripping the[.iixirigsff`A f i disposed on said support, a stirrup connected to said support. an eccentric attached thereto, a. rod in said openingen they support, ..spring supporting aadroci. ad abutting at one end. against,
the said rail, whereby the said eccentric when actuated closes the jaws and simultaneously locks 'fthe support to the rail.
