IMPROVEMENTIN CHAIR SEATS AND BACKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,824, dated November 6, 1877; application filed August 18, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL BATH, of Jersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Chair Seat and Back, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved chair seat and back, and Fig. 2 a top view of the detached spring-section of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to improve the chair seat and back for which Letters Patent were granted to me March 13, 1877, No. 188,410, so that a superior finish and still more increased elasticity are imparted to the seat or back, and an exact, but ready-made, imitation of the present upholstered seats and backs is furnished for the trade, forming a separate article of manufacture.

The invention consists of a molded pasteboard seat or back, having central hole, stuffing, and covering, in connection with a separate pasteboard section bolted thereto, and carrying auxiliary springs, to increase the clasticity of the stufling.

It consists, further, of the pasteboard seat having a circumferential molding and a similar stuffed edging attached thereto.

In the drawing, A represents the pasteboard bottom of my improved seat or back, which is stamped up by suitable machinery with a central round, square, or oval opening, a, and a concaved molding, b, of suitable depth, extending around the opening. The sides of the pasteboard bottom are turned down to form flanges d, by which the seat or back may be attached to the chair or other frame. The pasteboard bottom A is covered at both sides with canvas or other fabric B, that passes across the center hole a, so as to close the same. The fabric B is made convex and flexible above the hole, and isacted upon by a number of spiral auxiliary springs, G, that are secured to a second pasteboard section, D, of less width than the main section A. The pasteboard section D is made concave, with an outwardlyextending circumferential flange, D, by which the section D is firmly bolted or otherwise seboard covering B, and returned, not only by its own inherent elasticity, but also by the auxiliary springs, to its original position, without ever settling or caving in by use. The

pasteboard A is also stamped with a circumferential concave molding, e, for the purpose of receiving a stuffed edging, E, of circular shape, that is glued or otherwise attached to the molding e, so as to extend around the entire seat, and serve for the binding off of the edge of the same, in imitation of the edge of the usual leather seats and backs.

The seats and backs thus constructed may be directly applied to the-chair and other frames. They furnish comfortable supports for the body, and assume instantly their natural convex shape after the pressure thereon is relaxed. Thus a new article of manufacture for manufacturers of furniture and others is provided, which may be directly applied, in cheap and convenient manner, to new or old furniture, without requiring-the repairing of the same by an upholsterer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The pasteboard bottom A, having a central opening and a canvas covering, B, for the latter, in combination with a detachable auxiliary spring-section attached to the under side of said bottom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the flanged and concaved pasteboard section D and spiral springs O with the pasteboard bottom A, having a central opening, and a canvas covering, B, for the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
