12 Claims. (Cl. 205-22) This invention relates to apparatus for the working or attenuation of material which is supplied thereto in strand or strip form, yand. more particularly, my invention relates to an improved .5I form of wire drawing apparatus suitable for high speed operation.
This application is iiled as a division of my original application Serial No. 470,891, entitled Strand working apparatus.
As its principal object, my invention aims to provide improved apparatus of the type mentioned in which novel means is employed for guiding a strand of material being supplied to the working means.
Another object of this invention is to provide improved apparatus of the type mentioned, wherein the means for guiding the strand of material being supplied to the working means includes a movable guide member or hold-down and linkage for actuating the same upon movement of the cover of the casing which houses the working means.
The `invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in certain novel combinations 1.25" and arrangements or" parts hereinafter described and particularly set out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying sheet of drawing, Figure 1 is an endelevationalview of a wire drawing machine embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial side elevational View thereof; Fig. 3 is a top plan view vshowing the guide and hold-down'for the strand being supplied to the machine; Fig. 4 is an end elevational view thereof; and Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation taken substantially'on'line' 5 5 of Fig. 4.
v In the drawing, to which detailed reference will now be made, I have shown the strand working apparatus of my invention embodied in a wire 40 drawing machine suitable for high speed operation, and Yalthough I show a wire drawing machine in illustrating myv invention, it should be understood, however, that my invention may be applied to various forms of apparatus for the working or attenuation of material in strand or strip form. 1
In general, the wire drawing machine which I have illustrated comprises strand working apparatus arranged within the casing `11 and adapted to be driven by the main motor 12 and suitable winding or spooling apparatus (not shown) which is locatedadjacent the casing and is adapted lto take up the strand delivered by the working apparatus.

the guide box 14 This guide box is secured to a wall of the casing 11 and guides the strand of rmaterial whichr is being supplied to the workn ing means through an opening provided in this wall of the casing. The guide box, as clearly shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, comprises a channelshaped member 15 which, in this instanc e, is
bolted to the wall of the casing 11, and which is provided with spaced iingers 16 arranged to extend vertically across the opening of the ing wall. Asrshown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, four guide slots are provided, and during the operation of the machinery the strand supplied to the Working means passes through one of theiguide slots, depending upon the arrangement of dies which is to be used, while the other guide slots :may be closedby means of suitable removable bars 18.

The upper or movable guide member 2l is provided with a hardened plate 22 of rounded form which holds the strand of material down `in the guide slots 17 and prevents vthe strand 'from damaging or jarring the 'cover 23 of Ythe casing.
The movable guidemember .is
preferably constructed'with an arcuate extension 24 at its. free end which functions'as a stopfor holding 'the guide-members in :properly spaced cooperating relation. According to my invention, this-extension is so shaped and arranged that'as the upper guide member-moves toward the -1 guide member, the extensionacts as a deflecting means which tends Yto sweep Athe -strandintothe guide slots during its movement towardthe l guide member.
During the operation of stringing the strand of material to be worked around the capstans of the working means, the cover of the casing 1l is in the open position indicated in Fig. 4. After the Stringing operation has been completed and the machine is to be set in operation, the cover is moved to the closed position. To provide for movement of the upper guide member 21 in associated relation with the cover 23 so that the strand can be inserted intogthe guide slot 17 during the Stringing operation, and so that the strand will be retained in the guide slot when the cover has been closed, I employ toggle linkage for swinging the movable guide member away from and toward the lower guide member. This linkage comprises a lever 25 having one end thereof mounted upon the cover actuating shaft 26 and its other end hinged to the link 27 which is in turn pivoted to the movable guide member. With this arrangement, movement of the cover from the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 4- to the full line position shown in Fig. 2 causes the upper guide member to be swung from the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 4 toward the lower guide member and to assume the full line position indicated. When the upper guide member has been swung downwardly into cooperating spaced relation with the lower guide member it will be noted that the link 2'? has ,i assumed a substantially straight line position,
with respect to the lever 25, with the result that this linkage forms a toggle which opposes the action of the strand against the upper guide member tending to swing this member about its pivot. This toggle linkage thus tends to maintain the movable guide member in proper position and prevents the strand, which is entering the casing, from rattling or jarring the cover open.
The movement of the cover to open and closed positions may be accomplished by any suitable means, and in this instance I have shown a fluid pressure cylinder 28 which is arranged to perform thisfunction. A piston reciprocably mounted in the cylinder is operably connected to the arm or lever 29 which is secured to the cover shaft 26. Thus, by the admission of fluid pressure through suitable valve means, the cover 23 may be moved to open or closed position, and, likewise, the movable guide member or hold-down 21 is also moved away from or toward the lower guide member 20. It will now be readily seen that I have provided a novel guide and hold-down means for directing a strand of material into the casing in such a waythat it does not damage or jar the cover.
Additionally, it will be seen that this guide and hold-down means is adapted to be actuated by the same means which operates the cover and is so arranged that it sweeps the strand o f material into .the guide slots as the cover is being closed and releases the strand so that the latter may be removed from the slot when the cover is opened.
While I have illustrated and described the device of my invention in a detailed manner, it should be understood, however, that I do not intend to limit myself to the precise details and arrangements of parts which I have shown and described, but regard my invention as including such changes and modifications as do not involve a departure from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. `In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a casing, strand working means in said casing, hinged cover means for said casing,
and cooperating relatively movable means associated with said cover and said casing for guiding the strand of material being supplied to said working means, said relatively movable cooperating means comprising an open guide on said casing and a retaining member arranged to swing with said cover during closing movement of the latter whereby said retaining member is positioned transversely of said open guide to retain said strand'therein.
2. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a casing, strand working means in said casing, cover means for said casing, means on said casing providing an open ended recess for guiding the strand of material being supplied to said working means, and means cooperating with the guiding means for retaining the strand therein and for preventing the strand from engaging said cover means, said cooperating means comprising a member hingedly mounted adjacent said recess and adapted to be swung into a strand retaining position transversely of the recess.
3. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a casing having an opening through a wall thereof, movable cover means for said casing, strand working means in said casing, means on said casing for guiding a strand of material being supplied to said working means through said opening, and means movable with said cover means toward said guiding means to retain said strand therein when the cover is closed and movable with said cover means away from said guiding means to permit removal of said strand therefrom when the cover is open.
4. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a casing having an opening through a wall thereof, movable cover means for said casing, actuating means for moving said cover to open and closed positions, strand working means in said casing, and means for guiding a strand of material being supplied to said working means through said opening including a member adapted to be moved by said cover actuating means.
5. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a casing having an opening through a wall thereof, movable cover means for said casing, actuating means for moving said cover to open and closed positions, strand working means in said casing, and means for guiding a strand of material being supplied to said working means through said opening including a lower guide member carried by said casing, and an upper guide member hinged with respect to said lower guide member, and means connecting said upper guide memberwith said cover actuating means whereby said upper guide member is swung into proximity with the lower guide member when said cover is closed and is swung awayfrom the lower guide member when the cover is opened.
6. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a casing having an opening through a wall thereof, strand working means in said casing, and means Afor guiding a strand of material being supplied to said working means through said opening including a movable member, and pivotal mounting meansfor said member disposed at one side of said opening whereby said member is adapted to be swung transversely of the axis of said opening for sweeping Vsaid strand into said opening.
7. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a casing, movable cover means for said casing, strand working means in said casing, means associated with said casingV for guiding a strand of material being supplied to said working means, and a member adapted to be moved toward said guiding means as said cover is being closed, said member having angularly disposed means thereon for deflecting said strand toward said guiding means.
8. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a casing, movable cover means for said casing, strand working means in said casing, means for guiding a strand of material being supplied to said working means including relatively movable cooperating guide members, and toggle linkage connecting one of said members for movement simultaneously with said cover means, said toggle linkage being adapted to assume substantially a straight line arrangement for preventing movement of said one member as a result of the action of said strand thereagainst.
9. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a casing, movable cover means for said casing, strand Working means in said casing, means for guiding a strand of material being supplied to said working means including a lower guide member and an upper guide member, said upper guide member being hinged at one end thereof for swinging movement relative to the lower member, means for actuating said cover to close the same, and actuating means for moving said movable guide member toward said lower guide member at a faster initial rate than the initial closing movement of said cover means, the last mentioned actuating means comprising a pivoted lever and a link connecting said lever to said upper guide member.
10. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a casing, movable cover means for said casing, strand working means in said casing, means for guiding a strand of material being supplied to said working means including a lower guide member and an upper guide meniber movable relative thereto, and actuating linkage including a pair of pvotally connected links for moving said movable guide member into cooperating relation with said lower guide member simultaneously with the closing movement of said cover means, said linkage being so arranged that said pair of links assume a substantially straight line position when said cover is closed and thereby tend to prevent movement of said upper guide member by said strand.
11. In apparatus of the character described the combination of a casing having strand working means therein, guide means on the wall of said casing for guiding a strand being supplied to said working means, a hingedly mounted cover for said casing, a movably mounted retaining member adapted to be moved into cooperating relation with said guide means for retaining said strand therein, and fluid pressure responsive means for actuating said cover and said retaining member.
12. In apparatus of the character described the combination of a casing having strand working means therein, guide means on the Wall of said casing for guiding a strand being supplied to said working means, a movable cover for said casing, a rotatable shaft for actuating said cover, a hinged retaining member adapted to be swung into cooperating relation with said guide means for retaining said strand therein, means connecting said retaining member for actuation by said shaft, and fluid pressure responsive means for rotating said shaft.
