(Cl. 259135) This invention relates to a beater for foodstuffs, more especially to an improvement upon the construction of beater described and claimed in Patent Number'1,826,356, granted to me October 6,
In the patent aforesaid a heater means is adapted to be rotated in one direction by means of the lowering movement of a hand-operated driver traveling along a spirally grooved rotatable shaft carrying the beater means, and a momentum means is employed for the shaft. The momentum means is fixed to the shaft in spaced relation above the beater means and is not employed for beating purposes. The momentum 1 means is associated with the shaft for maintaining the rotation of the beater means during the idle movement of the driver and generally for maintaining a steady rotation of the beater means.
The improved beater, in accordance with this invention, not only embodies the objects and advantages as defined in the patent aforesaid, but has for its further object to provide, the device with a combined momentum and beater structure so constructed and arranged whereby the momentum means and beating means of said structure, while maintaining their functions during their operation, will also act cojointly to simultaneously take part in the actual beating of the foodstuff thereby not only increasing the emciency of,.but will furthermore expedite the beating operation.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a
beater for foodstuffs which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement,-strong, durable, compact, thoroughly eflicient in its use, readily assembled, conveniently operated, expeditious in operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the :above ends essentially, and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of such parts, and such combination of parts which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

In Figure 1 of the drawing, a spirally grooved rotatable shaft 1 is shown, and which has its upper end rotatably positioned in a hand hold or gripper element 2. In Figures 2, 3 and 4, the spirally grooved rotatable shaft is indicated at 3, 7 4 and 5 respectively. In Figures 2, 3 and 4, the lower portion of the rotatable shaft is illustrated. The rotatable shaft is to have mounted thereon a reciprocatory driver for rotating it. In Figure 1,'the driver is shown as mounted on shaft 1 and is designated 5. The construction and operation of the shaft and driver are as described in the patent aforesaid. The structure 6 includes a tubular coupling element '1, a momentum means 8 and a heater means 9. The element! is in the form of a sleeve 10 of the desired length provided at its top and bottom with laterally disposed annular flanges 11, 12 respectively. The sleeve 10 encompasses a stretch of and is fixed to shaft 1.
The momentum means 8 is in the form of a horizontally disposed circular disc 13 of the desired weight and diameter. The disc 13 is formed with an axial opening 14 through which extends the sleeve 10. The edge of opening 13 is anchored to sleeve 10 so that the disc and shaft will bodily revolve. The. disc 13 is positioned between the transverse median and lower end of sleeve 10. The disc 13 is formed with a beveled edge 15 and 10f a group of openings 16 of different diameters for the passage of the foodstuff during the beating operation and also to provide air openings.
The beater means 9 is of skeleton form and substantially of pear-shaped contour. The means 9 is constructed from a series of curved spaced beater members 1'1. Each member 1'? consists of a metallic strap of the desired width and thickness snugly seated intermediate its ends in a notch 18 formed in the edge 15 of disc 13. The 11 upper and lower ends of the members 17 are inturned as at 19, 20 respectively and anchored to the flanges 11, 12 respectively.
The shaft 3 has its lower portion provided with a combined momentum and heater structure referred to generally at 21. The structure 21 includes an upper collar 22, a lower disc 23, a momentum means 24 and a beater means 25.
The momentum means 24 is in the form of a horizontally disposed circular disc 26 of the desired weight and diameter. The disc 26 is formed with an axial opening 27 andan axial boss 28. The edges of said opening 27 are anchored to shaft 3 so that the latter and disc 26 will bodily revolve. The disc 24 is formed with a smooth edge 28 and a circular row of openings 29 of different diameters for the passage of the foodstuff during the beating operation and also to provide air openings.
The beater means 25 is of skeleton form and of substantially pear-shaped contour. The means 25 is constructed from a series of curved spaced beater members 30. Each member 30 consists of a metallic strap of the desired length and thickness snugly bearing intermediate its ends against the edge 28. The upper collar 22 is connected to shaft 3 and is employed for clamping the upper ends of the members 30 to the shaft. The disc 23 is anchored to the lower end of shaft 3 and is employed for coupling the lower ends of the members 30 and the shaft. The disc 26 is arranged between the transverse median and lower end of the beater means 25.
The shaft 4 has its lower portion provided with a combined momentum and beater structure generally indicated at 31. The structure 31 includes an upper collar 32 anchored to shaft 4, a lower disc 33 secured upon the lower end of shaft 4, a momentum means 34 and a beater means 35.
The momentum means 34 is in the form of a horizontally disposed circular row of spaced globular weights 36 carried by the beater means 35 below the transverse median of the latter. The beater means 35 is of skeleton form and of substantially pear-shaped contour. The means 35 is constructed from a series of curved spaced beater members 3'7. Each member 37 consists of a. metallic strap of the desired length and thickness extending through and anchored to a weight 36. The upper collar 32 is anchored to shaft 4 and is employed for clamping the upper ends of the members 37 to the shaft. The disc 33 is employed for anchoring the lower ends of the members 3'7 with the shaft 4.
The shaft 5 has its lower portion provided with a combined momentum and beater structure generally indicated at 38. The structure 38 includes upper and lower superposed spaced apertured discs 39, 40 anchored to shaft 5, a momentum means 41 and a beater means 42.
The momentum means 41 is substantially of the same form as the momentum means 24, with this exception, that it has its edge provided with an annular groove 43 and its edge also formed with spaced notches 44. The beater means 42 is substantially of the same form as the beater means 25 with this exception, that it is a length less than that of means 25, has its members 45 seated in the notches 44 and the upper and lower ends of the members 45 respectively engaging in the discs 39, 40. The momentum means 41 is positioned between the transverse median and lower end of the beater means 42. The latter is of skeleton form and substantially of pear-shaped contour.
In Figures 6 and '7 the spirally grooved rotatable shafts are indicated at 46, 47 respectively carrying at their lower portions combined momentum and beater structures 48, 49 respectively.
The beater means of the structure 48 or that of structure 49 may be similar to any of the forms shown by Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 but is illustrated by way of example to correspond to the form shown by Figure 4.
The combined momentum and beater structure 48 includes a momentum means 50 and a beater means 51. The momentum means 50 is in the form of an annulus 52 of the desired weight encompassing and anchored to the outer faces of the beater member 53 of the beater means 51. The annulus 52 is interposed between the ends of the beater members 53, and preferably the position of the momentum means 50 with respect to the beater means 51 will be between the transverse median and lower end of the latter. The beater members 53 are coupled at their ends with the shaft 46, as at 54, 55 and in a manner whereby the structure 48 will bodily rotate with said shaft.
The combined momentum and beater structure 49 includes a momentum means 56 and a beater means 57, and the former consists of an annulus 58 of the desired weight encompassed by and anchored to the inner faces of the beater members 59 of the beater means 57. The annulus 58 is interposed between the ends of the beater members 59 and preferably the position of the momentum means 56 with respect to the beater means 57 will be between the transverse median and lower end of the latter. The beater members 59 are coupled at their ends with the shaft 47, as at 60, 61 and in a manner whereby the struc ture 49 will bodily rotate with said shaft.
The momentum means 50 or 56 may be of any suitable cross section.
The several momentum means of the disc-like form function to provide for'the material to be beaten, when the rotatable shaft is operated from the driver and while acting as a momentum means for the shaft will also assist in beating upon the material. The group or row of openings in the said means will allow for the passage of the material through the discs, thus assuring a rapid and efiicient beating.
The beater members have their lower portions bent inwardly to extend to the level of the lower end of the shaft, and thus substantially to the bottom of the cup or dish containing the substance to be beaten. This arrangement insures that all the material is agitated and prevents the formation of an unbeaten layer of material at the bottom of the cup or dish.
Each combined momentum and beater structure provides a means whereby when the rotatable shaft is operated, the momentum creating part of said structure coacts simultaneously with the beater part of said structure to provide for a thoroughly efficient beating operation, as well as to facilitate the latter.
Each combined momentum and beater structure is rigid and has its parts or elements secured together in a manner to prevent the separation thereof during its operation to provide momentum creating and beating functions.
What I claim is:-
1. In a foodstuff beater the combination with a spirally grooved shaft and a driving member travelling lengthwise of the shaft in opposite directions and acting to rotate the shaft when moved in one direction, of a combined momentum and beater structure carried by the shaft and bodily rotatable with the latter, said structure including a momentum means for the shaft and a series of spaced'beater members for the food stuff, said members opposing and having the major portion of their length outset from said shaft, said momentum means positioned relatively to and connected to each of said members to provide for it performing a beating function intermediate the ends of and in unison with the beating function of said members simultaneously with the momentum function created thereby, said members being disposed lengthwise of and having their outer ends fixed to the outer ends of the shaft, said momentum means arranged intermediate the ends of said members, and means for connective-the inner ends of said members with said shaft adjacent the outer end of the latter, said connecting means limiting the movement in one direction of said driving member.

In a foodstuff beater the combination with a spirally grooved shaft and a driving member travelling lengthwise of the shaft in opposite directions and acting to rotate the shaft when moved irnpne direction, of a. combined momentum and beater structure carried by the shaft and bodily rotatable with the latter, said structure including a momentum means for the shaft and a series of spaced beater members for the food stuff, said members opposing and having the major portion of their length outset from said shaft, said momentum means positioned relatively to and connected to each of said members to provide for it performing a beating function intermediate the ends of and in unison with the beating function of said members simultaneously with the momentum function created thereby, said members being disposed lengthwise of the shaft, said momentum means arranged between the transverse median and outer end of the members, means for connecting the outer ends of said members to the outer end of said shaft, and means for connecting the inner ends of said members to the shaft and for limiting the movement in one direction of said driving member.

In a foodstuff beater the combination with a spirally grooved shaft and a driving member travelling lengthwise of the shaft in opposite directions and acting to rotate the shaft when moved in one direction, of a combined momentum and beater structure carried by the shaft and bodily rotatable with the latter, said structure including a momentum means for the shaft and a series of spaced beater members for the food stuff, said members opposing and having the major portion of their length outset from said shaft, said momentum means positioned relatively to and connected to each of said members to provide for it performing a beating function intermediate the ends of and in unison with the beating function of said members simultaneously with the momentum function created thereby, and said momentum means being arranged intermediate the ends of said members and in the form of a horizontal row of spaced weights each encompassing and carried by a beater member.

In a foodstuff beater the combination with a spirally grooved shaft and a driving member travelling lengthwise of the shaft in opposite directions and acting to rotate the shaft when moved in one direction, of a combined momentum and beater structure carried by the shaft and bodily rotatable with the latter, said structure including a momentum means for the shaft and a tion of said members simultaneously with themomentum function created thereby, said momentum means being arranged intermediate the ends of said members and in the form of a disc encompassing said shaft and provided with spaced openings, said disc having an annular groove in its edge intersected by spaced notches, and said beater members extending through said notches.

In a foodstuff beater the combination with a spirally grooved shaft and a driving member travelling lengthwise of the shaft in opposite directions and acting to rotate the shaft when moved inone direction, of a momentum member in the form of a disc encompassing and anchored at its axis to the shaft intermediate the ends of the latter, and a skeleton beater means disposed lengthwise with respect to the shaft and having its inner face abutting at a point intermediate its ends the edge of said disc at spaced intervals, means for securing one end of said beater means with the shaft intermediate the ends of the latter and inwardly with respect to said disc, means positioned upon the shaft for connecting the other end of the beater means to the outer end of the shaft.

In a foodstuff beater the combination with a spirally grooved shaft and a driving member means for securing one end of said beater means with the shaft intermediate the ends of the latter and inwardly with respect to said disc, means positioned upon the shaft for connecting the other end of the beater means to the outer end of a the shaft, and a tubular member positioned upon the shaft for connecting the said pair of connecting means together.

In a foodstuff beater the combination with a spirally grooved shaft and a driving member travelling lengthwise of the shaft in opposite directions and acting to rotate the shaft when moved in one direction, of a momentum member in the form of a disc encompassing and anchored at its axis to the shaft intermediate the ends of the latter, and a skeleton beater means disposed lengthwise with respect to the shaft and having its inner face abutting at a point intermediate its ends the edge of said disc at spaced intervals, means for securing one end of said heater means with the shaft intermediate the ends of the latter and inwardly with respect to said disc, means positioned upon the shaft for connecting the other end of the beater means to the outer end of the shaft, and said disc being formed with spaced 5 in the form of a disc encompassing and anchored at its axis to the shaft intermediate the ends of the latter, and a skeleton beater means disposed lengthwise with respect to the shaft and having its inner face abutting at a point intermediate its ends the edge of said disc at spaced intervals,
ing in one direction, 01' a combined momentum and heater structure mounted axially thereof and having its ends anchored to said shaft at two spaced points of the latter to provide for said structure bodily moving with the shaft, the beater means of said structure consisting of a series of spaced beater members disposed lengthwise of and offset their entire length with respect to said shaft, each of said members formed of an inner and an outer stretch, the former being of greater length than the latter, the momentum means of said structure consisting of a disc connected axially thereof with said shaft, arranged within said heater means and secured to said member at the point of mergence of the inner with the outer stretches, said disc being formed with spaced openings adjacent its edge.
