IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR SHAPING AND FINISHING HATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,575, dated October 30, 1877; application filed September 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT LEWIS G01)- DARD, of Palmer, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dies for Shaping and Finishing Hats, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a detail section of my improved dies. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish dies for shaping and finishing braid and other hats, which shall be so constructed as to do the work quickly and well, and which shall be so constructed that it may be readily adjusted for operating upon diflerent sizes and styles of hats.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the shell of the die, which is made tubular in form and hollow, and is provided with two or more holes, a, in its top, with which, or with two of which, are designed to be connected steam-pipes, so that the dies can be quickly heated with live steam, by which a better effect is produced. Into the cavity of the die A is fitted the die or pot B, by which the shape is given to the hat-body, and which is kept from dropping out by a cross-bar, G, secured detachably to its top by screws, and the ends of which overlap the top of the die or shell A. The die or pot B is kept from being drawn up too far by a flange, 1), formed around its lower edge, and which fits into a rabbet, a in the lower side of the shell A. This construction allows the pot B to be changed for another one having a larger, or a smaller, or a different shaped cavity readily and quickly, as may be desired.
D is a rubber block, which fits into the cavity of the pot B, and is designed to have the body of the hat placed upon it. The block D may be made of solid rubber, or may be made of other material, covered with a coating of rubber an inch, more or less, in thickness. The block D is made with a flange, d, to receive the brim of the hat. The rubber block D rests upon a plate, E, which forms the base of the die, and which has a slight rise or flange formed around its edge to keep the rubber block D in proper position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hatpress in which the pot B is held in the shell A by cross-bar G and flange b, the former made fast to the top of shell, and the latter fitting a shell-rabbet, a as shown and described.
