IMPROVEMENT IN LOCK-HINGES FOR WINDOW-BLINDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,181, dated October 16, 1877; application filed August 7, 1877. I

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL W. BEAL, of Rockland, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Blind Hinges and Fastenings,

of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to improvements in blind-fastening hinges; and the invention consists in the combination, with a pintle having a shank to be driven into the building or window-casing, of an eye-plate to be attached to the edge of the blind, and a weighted holding device adapted to embrace or engage the shank of the pintle, to hold the blind in either its closed or open position, as hereinafter more full described and claimed.

This holding c evice is preferably provided with alifting-piece arranged to projectthrough the stile of the blind within easy reach.

Figure 1 represents, in front elevation, one of my improved hinges, the blind shown in dotted outline being closed, and being viewed from the outside of the building. Fig. 2 shows the hinge with the blind opened. Fig. 3 shows a top view of the hinge, the blind being opened; Fig. 4, a bottom view of the portion attached to the blind, the latter being closed; Fig. 5, a side view of the pintle and its shank; Fig. 6, a back view, and Fig. 7 a front view, of the plate to be attached to the edge of the blind.

The blind a, shown in dotted outline, has the plate I) secured to its edge by screws 0 c at bottom and top. This plate has attached to or formed as a part of 1t a socket, d, to fit the pintle e, rising fiom, preferably, a wrought or malleable iron shank, f, adapted to be driven into the window-casing or building, the depending projection g acting as a brace, and, preferably, receiving a screw, as at h. The plate I) has on its front face a guideway formed between projections 2 3, to receive a vertical projection, 2', attached to a holding plate or device, 7:, having at one side a notch to receive the socket-piece d.

This projection ihas lifting-piece, 112, shown, in this instance, as a rod connected therewith, and projected horizontally through a slot, 12,

in the plate b, and through the stile of the blind, where it can be readily reached by a person desiring to lift the holding-plate, to disengage it from the shank of the pintle, when it is desired to open or close the blind.

The under side of this holding plate is grooved at 7", and provided with a shoulder, 8, near the plate I), so as to leave a space between the shoulder and plate b for the reception of the pintle-shank when the blind is closed, such shoulder then engaging the outside of the shank. When the blind is opened the pintleshank is caught in the groove 1". In this way the holding-plate is made to engage the pintle, and hold the blind opened or closed, and by lifting the holding-plate only from engagement with the pintle-shank the blind may be opened or closed.

A hinge such as shown and described may be cheaply made, easily applied to a blind, and

be easily operated without fear of lifting the blind from the pintle.

The holdingplate is of such weight as to remain in place when depressed or let fall to engage the shank. 4

A small pin rising from the top of the shank, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 5, may enter a hole or notch in the plate, as indicated in dotted lines 4, Fig. 3.

The shank may be attached by screws.

I claim- 1. The combination, with the pintle and its shank, of the socket-plate to be attached to the blind, and a holding-plate adapted to engage the shank and hold the blind open or closed.

2. The locking-plate, provided at its under side with the groove 4" and shoulder s to cooperate with the shank, substantially as described.
