Description
UNITED STATES PATENT oEETcE.
CHARLES M. ZIMMERMANN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONSTRUCTION 0F MILITARY DRUMS.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 19,602, dated March 9, 1858.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs M. ZIMMER- MANN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Military Drums; and I do hereby declare that the 'following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in securing the ropes to the sides of the hoops forming the ends of the drum and consists in a ready mode of connecting and disconnecting said ropes, also in lessening the friction and wear of said ropes by a series of pulleys arranged on the sides of the hoops.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will procede to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the drawing which forms part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a military drum showing a series of pulleys at either end, with the rope connected. Fig 2 is an edge view of metal shell and pulley, enlarged. Fig. 3 is afront View of Fig. 2 with section of ro e.
A A are the hoops forming the ends of the drum.
b, Z2, o, b,
are pulleys fastened to the hoops A, A.
(jl: Cl, Cl pulleys.
(l, (Z, d, d, are leather slides for tightening the ropes.
F, F, F, F, show parts of the metal shell bent over the hoops A, A, for the drum to rest or stand on.
L is the back of the metal shell, clasping the hoops securing the pulleys in their proper position.
713, F, g, Fig. 2, shows the proper shape of metal shell to t the hoops and pulleys.
It will readily be perceived by adapting and arranging the pulleys to drums, an easy and expeditious connection of the rope is made, also the friction and wear caused by passing the ropes through holes made in the hoops is in a great degree avoided.
I do not claim tightening the ends of military drums by a rope passing through holes made in the hoops, and over the same, as this is in common use; but what I claim is- Arranging and adapting a series of pulleys Z), Z), Z), Z), to the sides of drum hoops for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES M. ZIIIMERMANN. lllitnesses:
