Description

J'. J. PIATT. PLOWS.
No. 195,642. Patented Sept.25,1877.
i 'i I f glflwsEsg w INVENTOR,
ATTORN EYJ'.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH J. PIATT, OF LA FORTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,612, dated September 25, 1877 application filed May 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH J. PIATT, of La Porte, in the county of La Porto and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Plows and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to'the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 are representations of a side view of my plow, and Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts forming an improved plow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents the foot or standard of a plow, to which the share B and mold-board O are secured in the usual manner.
D represents the wheel on the under side of the mold-board, supported by a brace, D extending from the share or standard in the forward part of the plow to the wheel, and from thence to the back part of the share or under side of the mold-board.
D is another brace, extending from the upper side of the wheel, to support the top of the mold-board.
d is the pivot or axle on which the wheel turns, and which passes through the several supports, fastening them all together and causing the pressure from the several parts to rest on the wheel. This pivot or axle 01 may also extend up above the wheel, as a support to the rear end of the beam, and said wheel on said pivot may be raised or lowered, as circumstances require, by means of a set-screw, s, passing through one of a number of perforations, a, in the lower end of the brace D, by means of which the wheel may be adjusted.
The wheel D may be made of any size to suit the different kind or size of plows, and can be set to any angle, as may be required.
The wheel takes the place of the ordinary land-side of the plow, and forms a revolving land-side, reducing the friction to the smallest possible amount; and though the wheel may be arranged at any angle, I prefer to place it at right angles to the under side of the moldboard, as shown.
1 am aware that a plow has heretofore been constructed without a land-side, and that a friction-roller has been substituted for the land-side, which roller runs in the furrow-angle, and I therefore lay no claim, broadly, to such invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved plow herein described, consisting of the standard A, share B, moldboard 0, wheel D, arranged on the under sideof the mold-board, and supported by the brace D extending from the'standard to the under side of the mold-board, and the brace D extending from the side of the wheel to the top of the mold-board, substantially as de scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSIAH JACKSON PIATT.
